Entrevistas SWCP: Howard Swindell

Howard Swindell é um artista que trabalhou na indústria cinematográfica e na TV durante mais de 22 anos como escultor e pintor.Atualmente,enveredou por uma carreira em arte conceptual e digital 3D.

SWCP: Fale-nos do seu trabalho com os personagens Ree Yees e Plo Koon no episódio I de Star Wars.

H.S: A história do personagem Plo Koon começou quando houve uma decisão para cortar alguns personagens digitais no conselho Jedi.Por razões temporais, foi nos pedido para criarmos personagens de ação vivas e propor ao George Lucas alguns conceitos que poderíamos fazer para as maquilhagens e máscaras. Tive 3 desenhos escolhidos, que foram o Plo Koon, o Evan Piel e o Mas Omeba.Tendo esculpido e pintado depois todas as partes e objetos do Plo Koon e também cuidei dele durante as rodagens. A ideia original para ele era ter uma cúpula transparente em cima da sua cabeça que foi retirada no último momento a pedido do George.

SWCP: Tem mencionado que está sempre à procura do próximo desafio.Qual será o próximo?Já tem alguma coisa em mente?

H.S: Sempre anseio pelo trabalho seguinte e em especial com novos diretores, apenas passei 10 meses a trabalhar com o realizador Robert Stromberg num filme chamado Maleficent que foi provavelmente uma das melhores experiências em filmes que alguma vez tive.

SWCP: Também interpretou dois personagens do episódio I de Star Wars: O Senador Toobuck Toora e o Swokes –Swokes.Foi uma tarefa da qual já tinha alguma experiência anterior?

H.S: Não tive nenhuma experiência anterior, mas estava lá e os trajes foram construídos à minha volta, adorei cada momento nesse tipo de trabalho.

SWCP: Trabalhou na arte concetual no filme X-Men:First Class.Que personagens ajudou a criar?

H.S: Em X-Men:First Class, trabalhei em todos os personagens de um modo ou de outro, principalmente com o diretor de vfx John Dyskstra que também trabalhou na trilogia original de Star Wars.

SWCP: Que mensagem quer enviar aos fãs do cinema fantástico e da ficção científica?

H.S: Sempre fui um fã de todas as coisas relacionadas com sci-fi e fantasia desde criança, e encorajo qualquer pessoa a seguir os seus sonhos e a trabalhar em filmes, tv, ou banda desenhada, tal como eu fiz.

Howard Swindell is an artist who worked in the film/TV industry over 22 years. He decided to take a freelance´s career as a conceptual artist and digital 3D.

SWCP: Tell us about your work with the characters Ree Yees and Ploo Koon on Star Wars: Episode I. 

H.S: The history of the PLO Koon character started when there was a decision to cut back on digital characters in the Jedi council. For time reasons it was handed over to us in live action creatures to put forward to George some concepts we could make as make ups or pull over masks. I had 3 designs picked, they where PLO Koon,Evan Piel and Mas Omeba(check the names and spelling!)I then sculpted and painted all the pieces and prop elements of PLO Koon and also looked after him in set thru the shoot. The original idea had a transparent dome on top of his head which was dropped at the last moment by George's request.

SWCP: You are always looking forward to the next challenge. What will be the next challenge? Do you have already something in mind? 

H.S: I always look forward to the next job and in particular working with new directors; I just spent 10 months working close with director Robert Stromberg on a movie called Maleficent which was probably one of my best experiences in movies ever.

SWCP: You also interpreted two characters in SW: Senator Toonbuck Toora and Swokes Swokes.It was a work that you had any previous experience? 

H.S: .I had no prayer experience but I was there and the costumes where built around me, I absolutely loved every moment of doing it.

SWCP: You worked on the conceptual art department in the movie X Men First Class. Which characters did you help to create? 

H.S: On Men first class, I worked on all the characters in one way or another, oddly mainly with vfx head John Dyskstra of the original Star Wars fame.

SWCP: What message would you like to leave for the fans of sci-fi/fantasy movies? 

H.S: I was a fan of all things sci- fi and fantasy as a child and encourage any person to follow there dreams and work in film, TV, or comics as I did.
