Entrevistas SWCP: Eric Walter

O ator,realizador,produtor e compositor Eric Walter, interpretou o papel do jovem Mace Towan em `A Caravana da coragem ´ e `Ewoks: A batalha de Endor´.

SWCP: Fale-nos do seu papel nas aventuras dos Ewoks.

E.W: Desempenhei o papel do Mace Towani em Caravana da coragem e Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, também conhecido como Star Wars o primeiro Mace ou O.M. (The Original Mace). Pelo que ouvi, o George Lucas gostou do nome e usou-o mais tarde para o Mace Windu, interpretado por Samuel Jackson. Mace era o irmão mais velho e o protetor da Cindel Towani. Em versões anteriores do script, havia um monte de cenas em que o Mace não gostava dos Ewoks, porque não os conhecia nem confiava neles. Ele achava que os Ewoks eram apenas " escovas de cabelo andantes" para citar uma linha do filme. Mais tarde, ele aprende a confiar neles e aceitou a sua ajuda para encontrar os seus pais e matar o monstro Gorax.

Foi uma aventura maravilhosa e eu tenho muitas boas recordações desse trabalho na ILM, Skywalker Ranch e nos bosques vermelhos de Roy, onde se situava a aldeia dos Ewok. Este ano será o 30º aniversário dos filmes dos Ewok. Filmámo-los em Junho e Julho de 1984. Havia trabalho adicional para filmagens pick-up e dobragem áudio em Agosto e Setembro com o George Lucas a dirigir a refilmagem. O outro Diretor John Korty, estava nessa altura a trabalhar noutro filme, então ele tinha outro compromisso e não poderia fazer isso. 

SWCP: Apesar de não ser um Jedi,reviu-se nesse papel como uma espécie de Luke Skywalker?

E.W: Eu parecia uma versão muito mais jovem do Mark Hamill. Na verdade, muita gente pensava que eu era o Mark na primeira semana das filmagens e chamavam-me pelo seu nome até eles verem que eu era um jovem garoto.

SWCP: É o CEO da Walker Media Group.O que se faz nessa empresa?

E.W: A Walker Media Group é uma empresa que fundei para produzir todos os tipos de Media. Desenvolvemos programas para a televisão, documentários educativos e produção de vídeos musicais.A Walker Media Group é também a empresa-mãe da Ewalkingmusic.com que é uma editora de gravação que lança a minha música e uma lista de outros cantores com quem assinei contratos.Ouçam o meu 2º álbum "Universal Delight" com todas as novas músicas que saíram no final da Primavera/início do verão.O Robbie Freeman é um cantor que trabalha para nós e o seu álbum "One World" estará saindo na primavera. Ele já tem um novo single "Drinks on the House"disponível no itunes e na Amazon. 

SWCP: Escreveu uma canção intitulada `Return to Endor´.No que se inspirou para fazer esta canção?

E.W: Eu levei minha esposa à floresta vermelha de Roy aquando de uma visita a San Francisco em torno do 25º aniversário dos filmes dos Ewok .Sentado nessa floresta, lembrei-me de uma cena que foi cortada quando fiz o primeiro filme. É uma cena com o Logray o curandeiro Ewok, em que realizava uma antiga cerimónia para convocar os espíritos mortos dos Ewok mais velhos a regressarem a um festival anual de memórias dos Ewok.

SWCP: Lançou também um CD-ROM com fotos nunca antes editadas sobre o making-ofF dos Ewoks,Rancho Skywalker e ILM.Como é que os fãs podem obter esse CD? 

E.W: Eu tive o CD no meu website durante algum tempo e planeio adicioná-lo novamente muito em breve. Assim os fãs podem apreciá-lo.

SWCP: Que mensagem quer enviar aos seus fãs?

E.W: Gostei de fazer parte do universo de Star Wars e frequentar convenções diferentes ao redor do mundo e conhecer os fãs pessoalmente. As suas histórias de como Star Wars e minha parte lhes causaram impactaram nas suas vidas, sempre me deixou uma sensação de calor no meu coração e orgulho por ter sido uma parte dela. Estou ansioso para continuar a conhecê-los e talvez um dia, eu possa vir a Portugal para conhecer os fãs de lá.

The actor, director, producer and composer Eric Walter, played the role of Mace Towani in `Caravan of Courage´ and `Ewoks: The battle of Endor´. 

SWCP: Tell us about your role in the Ewok adventure feature films.

E.W: I played the Starring role of Mace Towani in Caravan of Courage and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor also known as Star Wars first Mace or The O.M. (The Original Mace). From what I heard, George Lucas like the name and used it later for Mace Windu played by Samuel Jackson. Mace was the older and over protective teenage brother of Cindel Towani. In the earlier versions of the script there were a lot of scenes with Mace being even meaner to the Ewoks because he did not know or trust them. He thought they were "walking hair brushes" to quote a line from the movie. He later learns to trust them and took their help in finding his parents and helping kill the Gorax monster. 

It was a wonderful adventure and I have a lot of great memories from working at ILM to Skywalker Ranch, and Roy's Redwoods where the Ewok village is located. This year will be the 30th Anniversary of the Ewok movies. We filmed them in June and July 1984. There was additional work for pick-up shots and audio dubbing in August and September with George Lucas directing the reshoots. The other Director John Korty, was working on another movie so he had another commitment and could not make it.

SWCP: Despite not being a Jedi, did you reviewed in this role as a sort of Luke Skywalker?

E.W: I did look a lot like a younger version of Mark Hamill. In fact a lot of people thought I was Mark the first  week of shooting and would call out his name until I turned around and they saw I was a young kid. 

SWCP: You are the CEO of Walker Media Group. What this company do?

E.W: Walker Media Group is a company I founded to produced all kinds of media. We develop Television Shows, Educational documentaries, do Music Production and Videos. Walker Media Group is also the parent company of ewalkingmusic.com which is a record label that releases my music and a list of other singers that I have signed to deals. Lookout for my 2nd album "Universal Delight" with all new songs coming out in the late spring/early summer. Robbie Freeman is a singer I signed and his album “One World is coming at in spring. He already has a new single "Drinks on the House" out on iTunes and Amazon.

SWCP: You wrote a song called "Return to Endor".What inspired you to do this song?

E.W: I took my wife to Roy's Redwoods on a visit to San Francisco around the 25th Anniversary of the Ewok Movies. Sitting in the redwood forest reminded me of making the movie and a scene that was cut out of the first movie. It is a scene with Logray the Ewok medicine man performing an ancient ceremony to summon the dead spirits of older Ewoks to come back for a Ewok yearly festival of remembrance.

SWCP: You released your personal Ewok pictures CD-Rom, that includes never before pictures taken during the making of the Ewoks movies,Skywalker Ranch and inside ILM.How fans can get this CD-Rom? 

E.W: I had the disk on my website for a while and plan on adding it again soon. So fans can enjoy it.

SWCP: Would you like to leave a message for your fans?

E.W: I have enjoyed being a part of the Star Wars universe and attending different conventions around the world meeting fans. Their stories of how Star Wars and my part in it have impacted their lives have always left a warm feeling in my heart and proud to have been a part of it. I look forward to continuing to meet them and maybe one day I can come to Portugal to meet the fans there.

Entrevistas SWCP: Ilram Choi

O Coreano-americano Ilram Choi, é um ator e duplo que tem trabalhado para filmes e séries como: Avatar,Transformers,Crank,Star Trek,O incrível homem aranha, entre outros.

SWCP: Porque diz que as artes marciais são a sua paixão? Tem alguma preferida?

I.C: As artes marciais de fato não eram a minha paixão no início. Fui de certo modo forçado a praticá-las quando era criança e consequentemente fui capaz de usar as minhas habilidades para me divertir. A minha favorita é a Capoeira. 

 

SWCP: Em jovem, começou a fazer pequenos vídeos caseiros com os seus amigos. Que tipos de filmes faziam?

I.C: Fazíamos filmes de artes marciais e comédias.

SWCP: É também compositor, editor e realizador de vídeos. Tem algum projeto recente nestas áreas?

I.C: De momento, não.

SWCP: Foi o duplo do Andrew Garfield no novo filme do Homem-Aranha. Pode falar-nos um pouco sobre o seu trabalho neste filme? 

 

I.C: Tivemos de fazer muitas cenas de duplos em `O Fantástico Homem-aranha´. Quisemos dar aos fãs cenas mais realistas mas há ainda muitos efeitos criados em CG (computadorização gráfica) na cena final. Mas a animação pareceu muito melhor do que a original, penso eu. Fiz principalmente as lutas e o trabalho no arame. Realmente quero dar o crédito ao David Elson e ao William Spencer assim como aos outros atores-duplos.

SWCP: Foi também duplo no filme `Avatar’. Como foi essa experiência?

I.C: Foi muito longo. Trabalhei nele durante quatro anos. Tornámo-nos numa família fechada durante todo esse processo. Foi uma coisa totalmente nova, portanto levou muitas experimentações porque o James Cameron queria que o filme fosse perfeito. Penso que deveria ter ganho o Óscar para o melhor filme naquele ano.

SWCP: Que mensagem quer enviar aos seus fãs?

I.C: Quando vocês escolhem a vossa carreira, tenham a certeza de que escolheram uma carreira que vocês gostariam até de fazer gratuitamente.

The Korean-American actor/stuntman, Ilram Choi, participated in several films and series such as: Avatar, Transformers, Crank, The amazing Spider-Man, Star Trek, among others.

SWCP: Tell us why you say: "Martial arts are my passion”. Do you have anyone favorite?

I.C: Actually martial arts weren’t my passion at first. I was forced to do it when I was a kid and eventually I was able to use my skills for enjoyment. My favorite would be Capoeira.

SWCP: When you were younger, you began to do home video movies with your friends. What kind of films were you doing?

I.C: Martial art comedies. 

 

SWCP: You are also a compositor, editor and videographer. Do you have currently any project in these areas?

I.C: None at the moment.

SWCP: You were the Andrew Garfield´s double in `Amazing Spider Man’. Could you tell us a bit more about your work in this movie?

I.C: We got to do a lot of the stunts practically in the amazing Spider-Man. We wanted to give the fans more realistic stunts but there still was a lot of CG (computer graphics) in the final cut. But the animation looked a lot better then the original I think. I mainly did the fighting and wire work stuff. I do want to give credit to David Elson and William Spencer as the other stunt doubles.

SWCP: You were also a stunt performer in `Avatar’. How it was this experience?

I.C: It was very long. I was on it for four years. We all became a close family during the process. It was such a new thing so it took a lot of experimenting and James Cameron wanted it to be perfect. It definitely played off. I think it should have won best picture that year.

SWCP: Would you like to leave a message for your fans?

I.C: When you choose your career, be sure to choose a career you would like to do for free.

“The Big Bang Theory” terá episódio especial sobre “Star Wars”

“The Big Bang Theory” vai voltar a homenagear “Star Wars”. Após o episódio com as participações de Carrie Fisher e James Earl Jones, exibido no início do ano, a série voltará ao universo “Star Wars”, agora com a ajuda da Lucasfilm. A CBS criou uma parceria com a empresa de George Lucas para gravar um especial, a ser exibido nos Estados Unidos no dia 1 de maio,  poucos dias antes do “Dia Star Wars”, comemorado a 4 de maio pelos fãs da saga.

“Fomos abordados pelo pessoal da Lucasfilm para fazer algo para celebrar o Dia Star Wars“, conta o co-criador da série Chuck Lorre, ao The Hollywood Reporter. Steve Molaro acrescenta “Sabiamos que o Bob (Newhart) ia voltar e quando a Lucasfilm nos contactou, apercebemo-nos que isto poderia ser uma oportunidade de misturar ambas as histórias e criar algo especial“.

Em “The Proton Transmogrification”, o nome deste episódio especial, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) é guiado por visões do seu ídolo de infância e mentor, Professor Proton (Bob Newhart), que aparece como o seu próprio Mestre Jedi. A Lucasfilm ficará encarregue de recriar Dagobah, o planeta de origem de Yoda, através da sua equipa de efeitos especiais. Irá também fornecer material para o episódio, incluindo um light saber que o Professor Proton utilizará. Entrevistas SWCP: Joe Johnston

O realizador, produtor e artista Joe Johnston realizou diversos filmes de renome como: The Rockteer,Jumanji,Hidalgo,Jurassic Park 3,Capitão América: O primeiro vingador, entre outros.Johnston trabalhou também na trilogia original de Star Wars como desenhador de efeitos visuais, diretor de arte, construtor de modelos e pintor. 

SWCP: Fale-nos de como foi contratado pelo George Lucas para trabalhar na trilogia original de Star Wars.

J.J: Tecnicamente, eu não fui contratado diretamente pelo George Lucas; fui contratado pelo John Dykstra que estava a supervisionar os efeitos visuais. Depois de STAR WARS, Lucas convidou-me e a alguns outros para nos mudarmos para o Condado de Marin, norte de San Francisco, e começar uma nova Industrial Light and Magic para ´O Império contra-ataca´. Sobre STAR WARS eu fui originalmente contratado para desenhar storyboards para as sequências dos efeitos visuais, mas o meu trabalho evoluiu para desenhador de efeitos visuais, diretor de arte, construtor de modelos e pintor.

SWCP: Também interpretou os papéis de um Stormtrooper e um Imperial Gunner no episódio IV de Star Wars.Como foi essa experiência? 

J.J: O George queria acrescentar alguns Stormtroopers no primeiro plano para a filmagem da Millenium Falcon a entrar no cais de aterragem da Death Star, mas nessa altura, só tínhamos um traje de Stormtrooper. A equipa de filmagem captou na frente de uma tela azul apontando para algo, e em seguida, movi-me alguns metros e fotografaram-me outra vez a fazer outra coisa. Quando eles compuseram o filme parecia que dois Stormtroopers estavam a ter uma conversa. O atirador imperial foi uma coisa semelhante, exceto que havia dois de nós, eu e o Jon Erland reagindo à explosão do laser. Estávamos na frente de uma peça muito rude e simples do cenário, apenas um painel com alguns botões e uma tela azul atrás.

SWCP: Fale-nos um pouco acerca do seu website Joe Johnston Sketchbook.

J.J: Não tenho muito o que fazer com o site. Contratei uma equipa muito eficiente para gerir o site e vender a mercadoria. Verifico duas vezes por semana para ver como ele está, mas os meus outros compromissos não me permitem estar muito tempo ocupado a investir nele. Confiei-o às excelentes pessoas que contratei para cuidarem dele. 

SWCP: No filme `The Rockteer´tentou captar os sentimentos e a essência da arte do Dave Hoberman.Porquê? 

J.J: A novela gráfica`The ROCKETEER´, foi única retratando um período de 30 anos quando a maioria da banda desenhada retratava os dias modernos e super heróis futuristas. Sempre adorei o estilo e design dos anos 30 e 40 e vi no filme uma oportunidade para retratar Los Angeles e Hollywood de 1930 como a terra dos sonhos romântica para a maior parte do mundo.

SWCP: Que mensagem quer enviar aos seus fãs? 

J.J: Eu gostaria de agradecer aos fãs dos meus trabalhos pelo seu apoio. O meu envolvimento com a trilogia original de STAR WARS foi um período único e emocionante da minha vida, embora alguns de nós já trabalhavam em filmes nessa época, percebi que era um lugar que eles teriam na cultura popular e história cinematográfica, e os filmes parecem ter ganho popularidade. Aprendi muitos conhecimentos que mais tarde usei nos meus próprios filmes durante os dez anos que trabalhei com os talentosos homens e mulheres da Industrial Light and Magic e agradeço-lhes pela comunidade criativa em que eles participaram. Agora, através da perspectiva do tempo, a maioria dos meus colegas da ILM manifestaram na sua grande parte a mesma opinião sobre os anos de 1975 a 1983. Foi uma incrível época quando nada era impossível quando trabalhávamos juntos numa coisa todos nós adorámos fazer. Eu sempre estarei grato pela chance de fazer parte disso.

ENGLISH VERSION:

The director, producer and artist Joe Johnston is responsible for such iconic films as The Rockteer, Jumanji, Jurassic Park 3, Hidalgo, Captain America: The first Avenger, among others. Johnston worked also for the original trilogy of Star Wars as a visual effects designer, art director, model builder and painter.

SWCP: Please, tell us about your hiring by G. Lucas to work on the Star Wars original trilogy. 

J.J: Technically, I wasn't hired directly by George Lucas; I was hired by John Dykstra who was supervising the visual effects. After STAR WARS Lucas invited me and a few others to move to Marin County, north of San Francisco, and start a new Industrial Light and Magic for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. On STAR WARS I was originally hired to draw storyboards for the visual effects sequences but my job evolved into visual effects designer, art director, model builder and painter.

SWCP: You also played the roles of Stormtrooper and Imperial Gunner in episode four of Star Wars. How it was this experience? 

J.J: George wanted to add some foreground Stormtroopers into the shot of the Millenium Falcon entering the Death Star landing bay, but at the time we only had one Stormtrooper outfit. The camera crew photographed me in front of a blue screen pointing at something, then I moved over a few feet and they photographed me again doing something else. When they composited the film it looked like two Stormtroopers having a conversation. The imperial gunner was a similar thing except that there were two of us, me and Jon Erland reacting to the laser blast. We were standing in front of a very crude and simple piece of set, just a panel with some buttons on it and a blue screen beyond.

SWCP: Tell us a bit more about Joe Johnston Sketchbook´s website.

J.J: I don't have a lot to do with the website. I have hired a very efficient crew to run the site and sell the merchandise. I check in twice a week to see how it's doing but my other commitments don't allow me a lot of time to invest in it. I entrust it to the excellent people I've hired to look after it.

SWCP: In the feature film `The Rockteer´you wanted to capture the feeling and essence of Dave´s art. Why? 

J.J: THE ROCKETEER, the graphic novel was unique in depicting a 30's period when most comic were modern day and futuristic super heroes and such. I've always loved the style and design of the 30's and 40's and I saw the film as an opportunity to portray 1930's Los Angeles and Hollywood as the romantic dreamland it was too much of the world.

SWCP: What message would you like to leave for your fans?

J.J: I would like to thank the fans of my work for their support. My involvement with the original STAR WARS trilogy was an exciting and unique period of my life, although few of us working on the films at the time realized what a place they would take in popular culture and cinematic history, and the films only seem to be gaining popularity. I learned a lot of the knowledge I would later use in making my own films during the ten years that I worked with the talented men and women of Industrial Light and Magic and I thank them for the creative community that they participated in. Now, through the perspective of time, most of my fellow “ILMers” have expressed much of the same opinion about the years from 1975 to 1983. It was an amazing time when nothing was impossible if we worked together at something we loved doing. I will forever be grateful for the chance to be a part of it.
