Catherine Mary Stewart uma atriz, realizadora, produtora e escritora canadiana com mais de 30 anos de carreira e mais de 50 produções diferentes, desde cinema a televisão e teatro, tais como: Night of the Comet, Law & Order, New Amsterdam, The Witches of Eastwick, Fim-de-Semana com o Morto, Nightflyers, The Last Starfighter,entre muitos outros. 

SWCP: Como surgiu a paixão de se tornar numa atriz ?

C.S: Cresci numa família de académicos. Os estudos não eram o meu forte, mas desde muito jovem que tinha uma paixão pela arte performativa. Comecei a fazer ballet aos 6 ou 7 anos. Não gostava muito, era um pouco rígido demais para mim. Achava aborrecido. A minha mãe foi fundamental para me introduzir na dança jazz quando eu tinha 14 anos. Foi aí que eu me destaquei! Ela também me incentivou a fazer aulas de teatro na escola na mesma época. Eu também adorei. Eu sabia que quando me apresentava no palco, fosse dança ou teatro, ficava emocionada. Quando terminei o ensino médio, estudei dança em Londres, Inglaterra. Enquanto estava lá, fiz um teste e fui selecionada para o minha primeira longa-metragem. Nunca mais olhei para trás.

SWCP: Qual foi a personagem mais complicada de interpretar até agora? 

C.S: Fiz uma minissérie chamada «Passion and Paradise». Apesar do nome, era uma análise do período que antecedeu a Segunda Guerra Mundial, do envolvimento da realeza com Hitler e da história real do assassinato de um cada. Interpretei Nancy Oakes, filha de Sir Harry Oakes, interpretado por Rod Steiger, que é assassinado pelo meu amante, Alfred De Marigny, interpretado por Armand Assante. Foi uma experiência maravilhosa e muito desafiante. homem muito poderoso e rico nas Bahamas. A minissérie foi baseada numa história real muito complicada. Interpretei Nancy Oakes, filha de Sir Harry Oakes, interpretado por Rod Steiger, que é assassinado pelo meu amante, Alfred De Marigny, interpretado por Armand Assante. Foi uma experiência maravilhosa e muito desafiante.

SWCP: Tendo trabalho com vários atores de renome,recorda-se de alguma situação engraçada ou incomum que tenha ocorrido com algum deles durante as rodagens ou nos bastidores?

C.S: Sinto-me muito sortuda por ter trabalhado com atores incríveis. Tantos ícones! Acho que o encontro mais memorável para mim foi quando conheci Robert Preston no set de The Last Starfighter. Para mim, parecia que ele tinha um brilho lindo. Na verdade, nunca trabalhei diretamente com ele, mas os nossos caminhos se cruzaram um dia, quando ele estava a sair do set e eu estava a chegar. Fomos apresentados, ele beijou a minha mão e acho que me apaixonei. The Last Starfighter foi o último filme em que Robert Preston atuou antes de falecer. Sou muito grata por ter feito parte dele.

SWCP: Você atuou em vários filmes de ficção científica. É fã desse género? Tem algum filme de ficção científica favorito?

C.S:  Gosto de ficção científica, mas não diria que sou uma grande fã. Acho que talvez um dos meus favoritos seja o filme original Aliens, com a Sigourney Weaver. Era tão original na época e as atuações foram fantásticas!

SWCP: Em que projetos está atualmente a trabalhar?

C.S: Estou prestes a atuar na peça Steel Magnolias, no papel de M'Lynn. Adoro atuar no palco. Sinto-me em casa. Além de atuar, também tenho dirigido, escrito e produzido:

Catherine Mary Stewart is a Canadian actress, director, producer and writer who has spanned more than 30 years and over 50 different productions, from film to television to theater such as: Night of the Comet, Law & Order, New Amsterdam, The Witches of Eastwick, Weekend at Bernie's,Nightflyers, The Last Starfighter, among many others.

 SWCP: How did the passion to become an actress come about?

C.S:  I grew up in an academic family. Academics were not my thing but I had a passion for performing from a very young age. I took ballet when I was 6 or 7 years old. I didn’t like it much. It was a little too rigid for me. I found it boring. My mother was instrumental in getting me into Jazz dance when I was 14. That is where I thrived! She also encouraged me to take drama class at school around the same time. I loved that as well. I knew when I performed on stage, whether it was dance or theatre, it thrilled me. When I graduated high school I studied dance in London, England. While there I auditioned and was cast in my first feature film. I’ve never looked back.

SWCP: What was the most complicated character to play so far?

C.S: I did a mini-series called “Passion and Paradise”. Despite the name it was a look into the lead up to World War II, the royals involvement with Hitler and the true story of the murder of a very powerful and rich man in the Bahamas. The mini-series was based on a true, very complicated story. I played Nancy Oakes, the daughter of Sir Harry Oakes, played by Rod Steiger, who is murdered by my lover, Alfred De Marigny, played by Armand Assante. It was a wonderful experience and very challenging.

SWCP: Having worked with several renowned actors, do you remember any funny or unusual situation that happened to any of them during filming or behind the scenes?

C.S: I feel so lucky with the amazing actors that I’ve worked with. So many icons! I think the most memorable encounter for me was when I met Robert Preston on the set of The Last Starfighter. To me it felt like he had a beautiful glow about him. I never actually worked directly with him but our paths crossed one day when he was leaving the set and I was arriving. We were introduced, he kissed my hand and I believe I fell in love. The Last Starfighter was the last movie the Robert Preston was in before he passed away. I’m so grateful to have been a part of it.

SWCP: You played several rules in a sci-fi movies. Are you a fan of this genre? Do you have a sci-fi favorite movie?

C.S: I like Sci-Fi but I wouldn’t say I’m a massive fan. I think perhaps one of my favorites is the original Aliens with Sigourney Weaver. It was so original at the time and the performances were fantastic!!

SWCP: What projects are you currently working on?

C.S:  I’m about perform in the play Steel Magnolias as the character of M’Lynn. I love to perform on stage. It feels like home. I’ve also been directing, writing, and producing along with acting. https://pro.imdb.com/name/nm0829252?ref_=hm_prof_name
