SWCP: Fale-nos da sua participação no episódio IV de Star Wars.

S.R: Eu estava a trabalhar num filme de aventuras chamado 'a Gente que Aquele Tempo Esqueceu' nas Ilhas Canárias, em que a estrela era o Doug McClure (Trampas na série de televisão americana), quando recebi uma chamada do Steven Spielberg que estava nos Estúdios Shepperton em Londres. Ele estava na sua semana final de audições para o filme Star Wars: Uma nova esperança. Perguntei-lhe se podia lá ir para uma entrevista já que para entrar num filme do Spielberg eu até nadaria até lá! Felizmente o nosso filme terminava as suas rodagens no fim-de-semana, permitindo-me chegar a tempo ao último dia das audições. Houve apenas uma pequena deixa para o meu papel e assim fiquei com o papel do Chefe engenheiro dos Rebeldes cuja função seria colocar o R2D2 na traseira do cockpit do X-Wing para o ataque final e outra cena depois. O realizador George Lucas finalmente veio e perguntou se sabíamos que haveria uma guerra em curso e se poderíamos fazer todas as partes em conjunto. Muito rapidamente fizemos tudo isso de seguida. O ataque final estava em curso!

SWCP: Foi a voz do Scott Tracy na popular série animada `Thunderbirds´.Esperava que esta série viesse a obter tão grande sucesso? 

S.R: Penso que o êxito de Thunderbirds como uma série de topo na televisão se deveu às grandes linhas da história, valores de produção superiores, música terrífica e uma apelação direta aos espectadores de todas as idades. Essas mesmas qualidades também fizeram de Star Wars um êxito mundial para sempre. Nenhum de nós se deu conta enquanto trabalhávamos na série que teria um impacto global e durável.

SWCP: Teve uma carreira de sucesso como cantor na rádio e televisão canadiana. Como surgiu a oportunidade de enveredar por uma carreira como ator em filmes?

S.R: Pouco depois de ter chegado a Inglaterra apareci num programa musical e de comédia na televisão chamado "After Hours". Que me levou posteriormente ao meu primeiro papel num filme do Stanley Kubrick intitulado ` Dr Strangelove´no papel de um co-piloto com o Slim Pickens .A partir daí, a minha carreira em filmes e séries televisivas decolou. 

SWCP: Como foi ter sido dirigido pelo saudoso realizador Stanley Kubrick?

S.R: Ter trabalhado com o Kubrick foi um prazer tremendo e provavelmente aprendi mais com ele do que qualquer outra pessoa. A sua diretriz favorita para os atores era a seguinte: "Deem e levem".

SWCP: Fale-nos um pouco da sua autobiografia `From Thunderbirds to Pterodactyls´.

S.R: Tive um acidente durante uma convenção sobre a série `Espaço 1999´na Flórida/EUA e tive de descansar durante algum tempo. Incapaz de ser ativo, a minha mente virou-se para a escrita de algumas coisas mais sérias e cômicas durante a minha carreira. Os anos 60/70/80 foram uma época excitante em T.V e Filmes. Boas histórias, dramas incisivos e grandes filmes. Eu tinha feito parte de tudo isso e quis que o melhor disso fosse lembrado. Foi realmente um modo recompensador de passar a minha recuperação.

SWCP: Quer enviar alguma mensagem aos seus fãs?

S.R: Fiquei em Sintra e Lisboa durante uma nova versão de 'Férias Romanas' e nunca esqueci a beleza do vosso país e os tempos felizes que passei em Portugal. Espero fazê-lo novamente qualquer dia. Obrigado.

Shane Rimmer is a Canadian actor and voice actor who have appeared in films and television series such as: Dr Strange Love, Doctor Who, The spy who loved me, Thunderbirds, Space 1999, and many others. In Star Wars: A new hope, he played the role of Rebel crew engineer chief.

SWCP: Tell us about your participation in Star Wars: A New Hope.

S.R: I was working in an adventure film "The People That Time Forgot" in the Canary Islands, starring Doug McClure (Trampas in the American TV series), when a call came through from Steven Spielberg at Shepperton Studios in London. He was in his final week's casting for the Star War's film NEW HOPE. Could I get there for an interview? For a Spielberg film I would swim there. Fortunately our film closed on the w/end and I was back in time for the final casting day - there was only one small speaking part left - I nabbed it and so became the Rebel Crew Chief whose job it was to cram R2D2 into the rear cockpit on an attack craft heading for the final assault. I would get one part of him in and another would pop out. The Director George Lucas finally came over and asked if we knew there was a war on and could we get things together? We very quickly did. The final assault was on!

SWCP: You were the voice of Scott Tracy on the popular series `Thunderbirds´. Did you hope that these series were coming to have so enormous success?

S.R: I think the success of Thunderbirds as a top TV series was due to great story lines, top production values, terrific music and a direct appeal to viewers of all ages. These same qualities have also made Star Wars a world success for all time. None of us realized when we were working on them that the impact would be so global and enduring.

SWCP: You had a successful singing career in Canadian Radio and TV. How the opportunity appeared for following a career as an actor in movies?

S.R: Shortly after I arrived in England I appeared on a TV music & comedy show called "After Hours". That led to my first film role in Stanley Kubrick's Dr Strangelove, as the Co-pilot Ace with Slim Pickens. From that time my film and T.V career just took off.

SWCP: How it was working with the late director Stanley Kubrick?

S.R: Working with Kubrick was a tremendous pleasure and I probably learned more from him than anyone else. His favourite note to actors was 'Give and Take'.

SWCP: Tell us a bit more about your autobiography `From Thunderbirds to Pterodactyls´.

S.R: I was injured during a 'Space 1999' convention in Florida USA and had to rest up for some time. Unable to be active, my mind went to writing down some of the more serious and comic things during my career. The 60's/70's/80's were an exciting time in T.V and Films. Good stories, punchy dramas, big films. I had been a part of all that and I wanted the best of it to be remembered. It was truly a rewarding way to spend my recuperation.

SWCP: Would you like to leave a message for your fans?

S.R: I stayed in Sintra and Lisbon during a re-make of 'Roman Holiday' and have never forgotten the beauty of your country and the happy times in Portugal. I hope to do it again some day. Thank you.
