Entrevistas SWCP: John Simpkin

O ator e músico britânico John Simpkin,participou em Star Wars:O Regresso de Jedi nos papéis de um Stormtrooper e do Klaatu,um dos guardas do Skiff do Jabba.

SWCP: Fale-nos um pouco dos seus papéis em Star Wars.

J.S: Comecei a trabalhar em `O Regresso de Jedi no início das filmagens, nos estúdios Elstree, Londres. Eu estava contratado para trabalhar em toda a cena do Palácio de Jabba como Klaatu, mas também acabei por interpretar um Stormtrooper no enorme cenário da Estrela da Morte e claro, a famosa cena do Bunker 'Você escória rebelde', ao lado do meu amigo de longa data, o Barrie Holland! No total, eu trabalhei no ROTJ durante sete semanas. O cenário do Jabba era um lugar muito emocionante para se estar...A Oola dançava antes da sua morte muito infeliz! E vendo o seu destino na fossa do Rancor. A chegada de todos os principais atores do elenco... A Carrie sendo acorrentada ao Jabba! Algumas cenas foram rodadas com o Klaatu a ajudar o Mark Hamill no seu caminho para o poço do Rancor, mas infelizmente não chegaram a ser incluidas no filme depois de acabado.  

As pessoas sempre me perguntam:" Como foi trabalhar com as estrelas"? Bem, posso dizer-lhe que o Harrison Ford era um pouco calmo e sério no set, mas o Mark era super divertido e muito amigável com todos. A Carrie foi talvez a mais engraçada de todos, sempre contando piadas e fazendo-nos rir. Depois de um dos Takes em que ela com o seu famoso biquini dourado, ter sido molestada por um dos braços do Jabba (que era na verdade o braço de um manipulador de marionetes), ela virou-se para nós bem pé perto da minha máscara de Klaatu e disse, "É um trabalho duro, mas alguém tem que fazê-lo!"

Embora tenha sido obviamente divertido e interessante, aquele cenário era incrivelmente quente, as cabeças de borracha que muitos de nós usavam eram claustrofóbicas e sufocantes e demorava algum tempo a colocá-las e vice-versa. Devido ao calor e longas horas no cenário do Palácio do Jabba,alguns atores desmaiavam com alguma regularidade. Então entre os Takes, o departamento de guarda-roupa trazia secadores de cabelo (definidos em frio, obviamente) e colocava-os nas nossas bocas para nos dar um pouco de ar... Todos estes alienígenas com secadores de cabelo na boca pareciam tão bizarros!

SWCP: Como surgiu a oportunidade de trabalhar neste filme?

J.S:Eu estava a trabalhar como um ator ‘À parte' durante alguns anos em filmes e televisão. Um dia recebi um telefonema do meu agente para ir usar um traje para uma 'criatura alienígena' no último filme de Star Wars "A Vingança de Jedi" chamava-se assim nessa altura! Quando vi pela primeira vez a cabeça, achei incrível... Tão Real! Eu tinha de fazer um 'teste de claustrofobia' para certificar-me de que estaria confortável a usá-lo mas como estava extremamente quente, e respiração não foi fácil. Eu realmente não estava confortável, mas não o disse porque era um trabalho emocionante! 

SWCP: É também músico. É profissional? Como se chama a sua banda?

J.S: Sim, eu toco guitarra durante quase toda a minha vida e a banda em que toco ‘Peach’ atua semiprofissionalmente, tocando em pubs, bares, clubes e casamentos ocasionais. Este ano nós esperamos tocar no grande prémio de Inglaterra, em Silverstone, para as equipas, mas ainda não foi confirmado! Seria um grande show, se o conseguirmos. SWCP: Já esteve em Portugal? Que ideia tem do nosso país?

J.S: Eu tenho que ser honesto e admitir que ainda não estive em Portugal! Já estive em Espanha várias vezes e realmente quero visitar Portugal em breve. Eu gosto de Espanha e Portugal parece lindo... Espero que em breve. Talvez eu pudesse ir a uma Convenção de ficção científica em Portugal! Tenho conhecido muitas pessoas de Portugal, e eles têm sido agradáveis, amigáveis e 'Descontraídos’. Acho que nós os ingleses, poderíamos aprender com a vossa atitude mais relaxada para a vida! (Talvez seja do vosso clima adorável).O Meu bisavô era um capitão do mar, navegando regularmente para Espanha e Portugal em meados de 1800 e casou-se com uma senhora espanhola, para que eu possa ao menos reivindicar alguma ascendência espanhola! 

SWCP: Esteve recentemente numa convenção de ficção científica em Scarborough,no Norte de Inglaterra. Que balanço faz da sua participação nesse evento?

J.S: Scarborough foi um evento novo e enorme no norte de Inglaterra, e foi muito divertido, espero que se torne numa Convenção de ficção científica regular. Em julho eu vou estar na London film and Comic-con pela segunda vez em quatro anos, é um grande evento que faz sentir muito ansioso.

SWCP: Que mensagem quer enviar aos fãs de Star Wars e em especial aos fãs portugueses?

J.S: Quando assisti pela primeira vez a uma Convenção de Star Wars, eu não podia acreditar no que vi, os fãs caminhavam vestidos como soldados imperiais e até havia uma Princesa Leia! Depois de um tempo eu vi como eles se estavam a divertir, como sendo parte de uma grande religião, e eram todos tão genuinamente boas pessoas. É incrível pensar que este ‘Clube' é verdadeiramente mundial e também o Star Wars Clube de Portugal, gostaria de dizer que estou tão feliz por me terem contatado e por se manterem a gostar e amar Star Wars! The British actor and musician John Simpkin,participated in Star Wars:The Return of Jedi as a Stormtrooper and Klaatu,a Skiff´s Jabba guard.

SWCP: Talk about your work on Star Wars.

J.S: I began working on Return of the Jedi, very near the beginning of shooting, at Elstree Studio’s, London. I was booked to work on the entire  ‘Jabba’s Palace scene as Klaatu,  but also ended up playing a Stormtrooper  on the huge  Death Star set, and of course, the famous ‘You Rebel Scum’ Bunker scene, alongside my long-time friend, Barrie Holland! In the end I worked on ROTJ for seven weeks. The Jabba set was a pretty exciting place to be…  Oola dancing before her very unfortunate demise!   And watching her fate in the Rancor pit…  The arrival of all the main cast.. Carrie being chained to Jabba! Some scenes were shot of Klaatu helping Mark Hamill on his way to the Rancor pit, but never made it into the finished movie unfortunately.  

People often ask what the stars were like to work with.  Well I can tell you Harrison Ford was somewhat quiet and serious on set, but Mark was out-going, fun and very friendly to everyone.  Carrie was perhaps the funniest of all, forever cracking jokes and making us laugh.  After one of the takes of her being molested in the famous Gold Bikini, by one of the arms of Jabba (which was actually the arm of a puppeteer),  she turned to us standing  nearby in my Klaatu mask and said, “ it’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it!” 

 Although it was obviously fun and interesting, that set was incredibly hot, the Rubber heads that many of us wore were suffocating and claustrophobic, and took time to get on and off. Due to the heat and long hours on the Jabba’s Palace set, artists regularly fainted. So in-between takes, the wardrobe dept. came round with hair dryers (set on cold obviously), and stuck them in our mouths to give us some air…  All these aliens with hair-dryers in their mouths looked so bizarre! 

SWCP: How did you get involved with Star Wars?

J.S:  I had been working as a ‘Bit-part’ actor for a couple years working in films and TV. One day I received a call from my agent to go for a wardrobe fitting for an ‘Alien Creature’ on latest Star Wars Movie “Revenge of the Jedi” as it was called then!  When I first saw the head I thought it looked amazing… So Real!  I had to have a ‘Claustrophobia test’ to make sure I was comfortable wearing it as it was extremely hot, and breathing wasn’t easy. I actually really wasn’t comfortable, but said I was because this was an exciting job!

SWCP: You are also a musician. Do you play professionally? What´s the name of your band?  

J.S: Yes I’ve played guitar most of my life, and the band I play in, ‘Peach’ works semi-professionally, playing at pubs, bars, clubs and occasional weddings.  This year we’re hoping to play at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone for the teams, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet!  Would be a great gig if we get it though….  We have a website: http://www.peachtheband.info/

SWCP: Have you already visited Portugal? What do you think about our country and people?   

J.S:  I have to be honest here and admit that I’ve not yet been to Portugal!  Spain several times, and I really want to get to Portugal soon.   I like Spain, and Portugal looks beautiful… Hopefully soon. Maybe I could come to a Portugal Sci-fi convention!  I have certainly met many Portuguese people, and they have been delightful, friendly and ‘Laid-back’…  I think us English could learn from your more relaxed attitude to life! (Perhaps it’s your lovely climate).  My Great Grandfather was a sea-captain, sailing regularly to Spain and Portugal in the mid 1800’s, and he married a Spanish lady, so I can al least claim some Spanish ancestry! 

SWCP: You were recently in a sci fi convention at Scarborough, North of England. What balance you want to do about your participation in this event?

J.S: Scarborough was a new and huge event in the North of England, which was a lot of fun, and which I hope will become a regular sci-fi convention on the calendar.  In July I’ll be at the London film and Comic-con for the second time in four years, which is a great event that I’m very much looking forward to.

SWCP: What message would you like to send for the fans of Star Wars?

J.S: When I first attended a Star-Wars convention, I could not believe what I saw. The fans walking round dressed up as Stormtroopers and Princess Leia!  After a while I saw how much fun they were having, like being part of a huge religion almost, and they were all such genuinely nice people. Its amazing to think that this ‘Club’ is truly world-wide, and to the Star Wars club of Portugal I’d like to say I am so glad you contacted me, and keep on enjoying and loving Star Wars!  Hopefully I will meet you some time, and if anyone wants to say Hello now, contact me on my Klaatu Facebook page:   Klaatu Skiff Guard.
