Entrevistas SWCP: Ricco Ross

O ator americano Ricco Ross, participou em diversos filmes e séries televisivas como: Aliens:O resgate,Babylon 5,Missão impossível (1996),O mestre dos desejos, entre outros.

SWCP: Foi quando ganhou uma bolsa de estudo para a UCLA,que sentiu que tinha grandes hipóteses de seguir uma carreira artística?

R.R: Sim, quando entrei na UCLA senti que o mundo seria meu a partir daí. Foi o dia mais feliz da minha vida nessa altura.

SWCP: Um dos seus primeiros papéis, foi na aclamada série policial `A balada de Hill Street’. Como foi essa experiência?

R.R: O meu papel em Hill Street não foi pequeno. Fui uma estrela convidada em 3 episódios. Um dia antes do primeiro episódio ter sido apresentado, um tipo que parecia um feitor, aproximou-se de mim e disse que só tinha visto uma parte do meu primeiro episódio e achou que eu era óptimo nisso. Eu sorri e agradeci-lhe. Mais tarde, percebi que ele era o produtor Steven Bochco e fiquei contente por não ter feito figura de parvo quando o conheci. 

SWCP: Fale-nos do seu papel (Soldado Frost) no filme Aliens: O Reencontro Final.

R.R: Eu estava a viver e a trabalhar em Londres como ator. Tudo bem, aqui está uma coisa que ainda não tinha contado em nenhuma entrevista. Fui para Londres estudar teatro clássico, após ter ficado frustrado por ter sido convertido num membro de um gangue para o casting de Hills Street Blues. Eu já tinha um Mestrado da UCLA e recusei-me a ser apenas considerado para papéis de bandido. Ainda, como um jovem negro ator naquela época em Hollywood não havia muito mais que fazer. Então fiz o teste, entrei e mudei-me para Londres. No primeiro ano do programa, os professores aconselhavam os americanos a adquirirem um sotaque inglês para que eles se pudessem concentrar em mais personagens. No final do ano, eu tinha um sotaque inglês melhor do que a maioria dos londrinos. Eu não queria voltar a Hollywood, pois sentia que nada mudaria e realmente queria ver se conseguiria trabalhar como um ator inglês para uma audiência inglesa. Gostei dos meus colegas ingleses que frequentavam as mesmas audições para papéis de inglês. Quando me perguntavam que escolas tinha frequentado, apenas mencionei a Academia de artes dramáticas (LAMDA) de Londres da qual eu tinha acabado o curso recentemente. Trabalhei numa peça teatral em Manchester após algumas audições, interpretando o papel de um marinheiro inglês que contracenava com a estrela Julia Hills.Com o passar dos tempos, até trabalhar no filme ´Aliens´interpretei papéis ingleses e americanos. Tinha-me sido oferecido um papel em `Full Metal Jacket´,do Stanley Kubrick como o Tenente Cleveland mas já me tinha encontrado anteriormente com o James Cameron. O James ofereceu-me o papel no local logo no primeiro encontro. O Kubrick ofereceu- me um contrato de oito semanas um dia mais tarde. `Full Metal Jacket´ sobrepor-se-ia uma semana e o James disse-me que podia ir para `Aliens´ com uma semana de atraso se o Kubrick me "libertasse". O Kubrick garantiu-me que só me “libertava” depois de oito semanas, então eu tive que escolher e o resto é história.

SWCP: Tendo trabalhado e vivido em Inglaterra, onde participou inclusive na popular série Doctor Who,que diferenças notou mais na área da atuação entre os E.U.A e o Reino Unido? 

R.R: Eu acho que no geral, o ator é tratado com mais respeito como artista no Reino Unido. Nos E.U.A, se você é uma celebridade é tratado como uma realeza, quer seja talentoso ou não. No entanto, os atores que não são famosos, são geralmente tratados como trabalhadores. Também notei que os atores no Reino Unido tratam o seu trabalho porque o amam. Os atores de Hollywood atuam quase como se fosse uma obsessão. Prefiro o sistema do Reino Unido é mais personalizado.

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs?

R.R: Não só estou a lançar fumaça sobre vocês, mas acho que os fãs de Aliens e os fãs de ficção científica em geral, são os mais criativos, inteligentes, divertidos e apreciativos fãs da Galáxia! Uma vez quando estava a assinar um autógrafo para um fã chamado Tyler Durden, eu disse a ele que tinha gostado muito de um poster que ele tinha feito sobre mim. Ele disse que poderia enviar-me um. Uma semana depois, ele enviou-me quatro posters de mim relacionados com o filme Aliens, a maioria dos quais nunca tinha visto! Quero enviar um grande abraço a ele, à sua esposa e a todos os incríveis fãs por serem a linha da vida de Aliens. O filme não seria o que é, se não fossem vocês.

The American actor Ricco Ross participated in several films and television series such as: Aliens (1986), Mission Impossible (1996), Babylon V, Whismaster, among others.

SWCP: It was when you earned a scholarship to UCLA, that you felt you had great chances to have an artistic career?

R.R: Yes when I got into UCLA I felt the world would be mine from that point on. It was the happiest day of my life at that point.

SWCP: One of your first Television roles was a small part in `Hill street blues´ series. How it was this experience?

R.R: My role on Hill Street wasn't small. I was a guest star with 3 episodes. One day before the first episode had screened a man that looked like a gaffer approached me and said he had just seen a cut of my first episode and said he thought I was great in it. I smiled and thanked him. Later I realized that he was THE producer Steven Bochco and was so glad I didn't make a complete ass of myself. 

SWCP: Tell us a bit more about your role as Private Frost in `Aliens´ (1986).

R.R: I was living and working in London as an actor. Alright, here is a scoop I have never told in any interview. I went to London to study classical theater after getting frustrated with being type cast after playing a gang member in Hills Street Blues. I already had a Masters from UCLA and refused to only be considered for gang roles. Still, as a young Black actor at that time in Hollywood there wasn't much else to do. So I auditioned, got in, moved to London. In the 1 year program the professors advised the Americans to acquire an English accent so that they could focus on character more. By the end of the year, I had a better English accent than most Londoners. I didn't want to go back to Hollywood so soon as I felt nothing would change & I really wanted to see if I could pull of playing an English actor in front of and English audience. So I like my English colleges stared going on auditions for English roles. When asked where I attended school I only mentioned the London Academy of Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) which I had just finished. I booked a play in Manchester after a few auditions and played an English sailor opposite my co star Julia Hills. By the time I went up for Aliens a couple years had passed and I was playing English and American roles. I had just been offered a role in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket as Lt. Cleveland but met with James  

Cameron before anyway. James offered me the role on the spot. Kubrick offered me an 8 week contract a day or so later. Full Metal Jacket would overlap 1 week and James told me I could come to Aliens a week late if Kubrick would release me. Kubrick would guarantee to release me at 8 weeks so I had to choose and the rest is history.

SWCP: In the late 1980´s, you lived and worked in United Kingdom where you had guest appearance in the popular series Doctor Who. What differences have you noticed more between United Kingdom and E.U.A about the movies/series industry?

R.R: I think the actor is treated with more respect as an artist in the UK in general. In the US, if you're a celebrity you're treated like royalty, talented or not. However, actors that aren't, no matter if they are more talented or not, they are generally treated as laborers. I also noticed that actors in the UK treat acting like a job they love. Hollywood actors treat acting as almost an obsession. I prefer the UK system is personally. 

SWCP: Would you like to leave a message for your fans?

R.R: I'm not just blowing smoke up you, but I think the fans of Aliens and Sci-Fi fans in general are some of the most creative, intelligent, fun and helpful, and appreciative fans in the galaxy! Once while signing for fan, Tyler Durden, I told him that I liked a poster he had made of me. He said he would send me one. A week later he sent 4 poster shots of me from Aliens, most of which I had never seen. All on his dime!!! Want to give a big shout out to him, his wife and all the amazing fans for being the life line of Aliens. The movie would not be what it is if not for you and that's just keeping it real.
