Entrevistas SWCP: Hironobu Kanagawa

Hironubu Kanagawa é um ator e escritor de peças teatrais que tem participado em diversos filmes e séries de Televisão tais como: Godzilla (2014),Ficheiros secretos,Ressurrection,Dark angel,Smallville,Caprica,Sanctuary,enter outros.

SWCP: Tendo interpretado tantos personagens, tem algum preferido?

H.K: Gosto de interpretar personagens que têm algo para lutar. Para mim,  

muitas vezes significa um vilão, mais recentemente o Jin no filme "Halloween Grave." Em 2008, interpretei um histórico general japonês o Mitsunari Ishida, num documentário-drama da BBC chamado "heróis e vilões." (Na história japonesa, muitos consideram-no um vilão).Foi uma grande experiência porque tive de trabalhar em Kyoto durante um mês com os mestres dos filmes de Samurais nos Estúdios Quioto Toyo.

SWCP: É também escritor de peças teatrais. É mais difícil do que ser ator?

H.K: Acho que escrever é mais difícil do que atuar. A escrita é uma atividade mais solitária. Escrever um drama completo exige resistência e paciência, tal como uma maratona. Atuar é como correr e a gratificação é mais imediata.

SWCP: Disse-me (Off record) que eu (Paulo Oliveira) tenho o nome de um jogador de futebol. Presumo que se estivesse a referir ao defesa central do Sporting Clube Portugal. É fã de futebol? Conhece bem a liga portuguesa?  

H.K: Eu sou um fã de futebol a cada quatro anos durante a Copa do mundo. Não conheço a Liga portuguesa de futebol bem, mas quando você me mandou um email, eu pesquisei o seu nome para ver quem você era e encontrei lá foi um jogador de futebol com o mesmo nome.

SWCP: Se fosse convidado para trabalhar nos novos filmes de Star Wars,que eventual personagem gostaria de interpretar?

H.K: É sabido que os Cavaleiros Jedi são inspirados pelo amor de George Lucas pelos filmes dos Samurais japoneses. Então seria ótimo se um dia um ator japonês fosse escolhido para interpretar um Jedi.

SWCP: Interpretou o papel do Doutor Cyrus Xander na série do canal SYFY, `Caprica´.Fale-nos um pouco sobre esse papel e porque é que esta série foi cancelada a meio da última temporada, tendo sido repostos posteriormente os últimos cinco episódios.  

H.K: Eu desenvolvi uma amizade com o Eric Stoltz durante "Caprica", que foi a melhor coisa que me aconteceu durante essa experiência. Ele tem dois filhos que são da mesma idade do meu, então as nossas famílias passaram algum tempo juntas. Foi muito fixe. Acho que o canal SYFY esperava que a maior parte do público de Battlestar Galactica visse também Caprica, mas os números de audiência foram muito baixos. Acho que a série foi prejudicada com a hora/dia em que era emitida (sexta-feira), quando a maioria das pessoas não estão em casa a ver Televisão. Além disso, foi o início da época PVR, e acho que muito do público gravava a série e via-a depois noutro dia.

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs?

H.K: Quero que meus fãs portugueses saibam que sempre quis visitar Portugal.

Hironobu Kanagawa is a playwright and actor who has worked on several films and TV shows such as: Godzilla (2014), The X-Files, Resurrection, Dark angel, Almost human, Smallville, Caprica, Sanctuary, among others.

SWCP: Having played so many characters, do you have any favorite? 

H.K: I enjoy playing characters who have something to fight for. For me, that often means a villain, most recently Jin in the film "Grave Halloween." In 2008, I played a historical Japanese general, Mitsunari Ishida, in a BBC docum. /drama called "Heroes and Villains." (In Japanese history, many consider him a villain). That was a great experience because I got to work in Kyoto for a month with the masters of samurai movies at Kyoto's Toyo Studios.

SWCP: You are also playwright. Is it harder than being an actor?

H.K: I do find writing harder than acting. Writing is a more solitary activity. Writing a full-length drama requires endurance and patience, like a marathon. Acting is like sprinting and the gratification is more immediate.

SWCP: You told (off record) that I (Paulo Oliveira) have the name of a soccer player. I assume you ´re mentioning the Central-defense of Sporting Clube Portugal football team. Are you a soccer fan? Do you know well the Portuguese football (soccer) league? 

H.K: I am a soccer fan every 4 years during the World Cup. I don't know the Portuguese soccer league well, but when you emailed me I googled your name to see who you were and noticed there was a soccer player with the same name.

SWCP: If you were invited to work on the new Star Wars feature films, what possible character would you like to play?

H.K: It is well known that the Jedi Knights are inspired by George Lucas' love of Japanese samurai films. So it would be great if one day there was an actual Japanese actor cast as a Jedi.

SWCP: You played the role of Doctor Cyrus Xander on the SYFY channel series `Caprica´.Tell us about your character and also why this show was cancelled in mid of last season, having been subsequently restored the last five episodes. 

H.K: I developed a friendship with Eric Stoltz during "Caprica" which was the best thing about the experience. He has two children who are the same age as mine, so our families spent some time together. That was nice. I think SYFY hoped that more of the Battlestar Galactica audience would watch Caprica, but the audience numbers were just too low. I think the show suffered from a bad time slot (Friday night) when most people are not home watching TV. Also, it was the beginning of the PVR era, and I think a lot of the audience was recording the show and watching it at another time. 

SWCP: What message would you like to send for your fans?

H.K: I would like my Portuguese fans to know that I have always wanted to visit Portugal as I love Porto wine and “sardinha assada”. (We have some great Portuguese restaurants here in Canada, in Montreal especially). The Japanese, of course, also owe a lot to Portugal: tempura, pão de castela, and even the Japanese word "arigato" for "thank you" is said to come from the Portuguese "obrigado."
