O ator e
duplo Neozelandês Shane Rangi, tem participado em inúmeros filmes e séries de
cinema fantástico e ficção científica como: Spartacus:Gods of the
arena,LOTR,Iron Man, Avatar,King Kong, entre outros.
SWCP: Tendo
encarnado inúmeras criaturas como Orcs,Aliens,Centauros,minotauros,etc,houve
alguma em especial que tenha criado mais dificuldades em usar a respetiva
máscara, prostética e traje?
S.R: Bem...
Vestindo algum traje ou usando próteses tem desafios, mas o mais difícil até à
data foi definitivamente o Alien de Skyrunners,já que eu estava na perna
inversa das Andas e selada dentro do traje. Uma dessas vezes, estive lá o maior
tempo possível que podia aguentar dentro do traje (quase 3 horas), e não podia
sentar-me, então tiveram que construir-me um pódio para me poder inclinar
contra ele.
Como se
andar sobre Andas (pernas de pau) não fosse já um desafio, a cabeça estava a
cerca de meio metro da minha frente, então o peso foi todo balanceado para a
frente, além disso eu estava praticamente cego quando colocava a cabeça
mecânica e ainda por cima a maioria das filmagens eram feitas no escuro!!!
Hahahahaha! Escusado
será dizer que foi muito difícil, mas fico feliz em dizer que sobrevivi a tudo
isso.
SWCP:
Defrontou o Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) em `The Wolverine ´no papel do Samurai
Prateado.”Lutou” com o próprio Hugh Jackman ou com um duplo?
S.R: Ambos.
O Hugh fez muita luta e posso dizer que foi uma honra lutar contra o meu herói
de infância, o Wolverine!!!! O Daniel Stevens foi seu duplo e que incrível
duplo foi, muito parecido com o Hugh!
SWCP:
Gostaria de interpretar mais personagens em que fosse o herói da fita como é o
caso do ator Dwayne Johnson? Que por acaso, até tem algumas semelhanças físicas
consigo…
S.R: Acho
que é muito engraçado você dizer isso...Muita gente já me tem perguntado se eu
sou ele ou que me pareço com ele. É claro que acho que não me pareço nada com
ele, e eu ficaria muito surpreendido se alguém viesse ter com ele e dissesse...
"Você é o Shane Rangi?" ou "você sabe com quem se parece? Shane
Rangi".
Mas para ser
honesto, eu nunca quis ser o centro das atenções, é por isso que adoro o
desempenho de criaturas e Prostéticas, assim sempre que saio do meu trabalho,
ninguém sabe quem eu sou. Embora desde Spartacus onde interpretei o Dagan, tenho
de dizer que foi bom ter usado o meu treino Toi Whakaari (NZ Drama School) e gostaria
de continuar a interpretar mais humanos de humanos. Talvez não como papel
principal, mas mais como de ator secundário.
SWCP: A sua
estreia em filmes foi na trilogia de LOTR?
S.R: Sim,
minha a minha estreia no cinema foi em LOTR.
Depois que
saí do Toi Whakaari,fiz teatro e alguns anúncios publicitários, nem sequer
consegui uma audição para filmes na Nova Zelândia, mas LOTR tinha começado as
filmagens e para minha sorte, o Richard Taylor gostou da maneira que eu trazia
os seus personagens á vida e foi o começo de uma amizade de 14 anos.
SWCP: Foi um
dos atores que mais papéis diferentes interpretou nos filmes de As crónicas de
Narnia,tendo inclusive interpretado dois personagens diferentes no primeiro
filme. É um pouco desgastante andar sempre a mudar de trajes e maquilhagem no
mesmo filme?
S.R: Na
verdade não foi tão mau quanto você pensa. Acho que é o que eu adoro sobre ser
um artista de criaturas, porque eles não podem ver o seu rosto, nem estarem
sempre a usá-lo. Sendo um ator treinado, realmente ajuda já que você pode
desenvolver diferentes características para cada personagem que você
interpreta. Em `Príncipe Caspian´,interpretei seis criaturas diferentes e assim
foi muito divertido. Se você observar os três Minotauros principais que eu
encarnei em cada um dos filmes de Nárnia,com sorte você pode ver as diferenças
que fiz para cada um deles. Para o General Otmin de LWW, eu queria ser o típico
grande Minotauro negro. Para o Asterius de Príncipe Caspian, eu quis fazê-lo
mais sábio e no ponto de viragem em que os Narnianos nunca mais viram
Minotauros foram associados ao exército da Feiticeira Branca. E em Tavros de
VDT, quis fazê-lo apenas um dos rapazes, que infelizmente não conheceu sua
própria força.
SWCP: Que
mensagem quer enviar aos seus fãs?
S.R: Antes de
tudo, gostaria de dizer obrigado a todos pelo vosso apoio e interesse pelo que
tenho feito. Eu nunca sonharia que viria a fazer entrevistas para sites de fãs
ou mesmo viajando ao redor do mundo para participar em convenções. Sempre me surpreendo
quando as pessoas vêm ter comigo, adoro compartilhar histórias com elas e também
estar na mesa de autógrafos ou das Perguntas & Respostas. Agradeço também
aos seguidores que tenho no facebook, e ainda a todos aqueles que leiam isto...
Quando
acordo todas as manhãs, há um novo dia para explorar, um tempo para aprender,

Shane Rangi is a Newzealand actor and stuntman. He has
played many characters in Fantastic and sci-fi movies and series such as:
Spartacus. Gods of the arena, LOTR, Iron Man, Avatar,
King Kong, among others.
SWCP: Having embodied countless creatures such as
Orcs, Aliens, Centaur or Minotaur, was it anyone in special that you had more
difficulty in wearing the costume and prosthetics?
S.R: Well... wearing any suit or prosthetics has it
challenges but the hardest to date has definitely been the Alien from Skyrunners,
as I was on reverse leg stilts and sealed into the suit. Once I was in there I
was in there for as long as I could handle it (longest was nearly 3 hours), I
couldn’t sit so they had to build me a rostrum so that I could lean against it.
As if walking on stilts wasn’t enough of a challenge the head was about a foot
and a half long out in front of me so the weight was forward plus I was pretty
much blind when I had the mechanical head in plus filmed most of it in the
Dark!!! Hahahahaha! Needless to say, it was very challenging but glad to say I
survived it.
SWCP: You fought with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) on `The
Wolverine ´in the role of Silver Samurai. Were the fight scenes effectuated by
Hugh Jackman itself or by a stunt double?
S.R: Both: Hugh did a lot of the fight and can I just
say what an honor it was to fight against my childhood hero the Wolverine!! Daniel
Stevens was his stunt double and what an awesome double he was, looked so much
like him and just threw his body around All Day!
SWCP: Would you like playing more characters in which
you were the lead actor, like Dwayne Johnson for example? We think that both of
you have some physical similarities...
S.R: I think it is very funny you should say that... I
get a lot of people asking me if I am him or saying I look like him. I of
course don’t think I look any thing like him, and I would be very surprised if
any one has come up to him and said... Are you Shane Rangi?? Or "Do you
know who you look like? Shane Rangi" But to be honest, I never really
wanted to be in the limelight which is why I love Creature performance and Prosthetic
work as I can go out and no body knows who I am. Though since Spartacus where I
played Dagan, I have to say it was good to put my Toi Whakaari (NZ Drama
School) training to use and would like to pursue playing more human roles. Maybe
not as a lead, but more of a strong supporting role.
SWCP: Your feature in movies was on the first LOTR
trilogy?
S.R: Yes, my debut into film work was LOTR. After I
came out of Toi Whakaari I did theatre and a few commercials, I couldn’t even
get an audition for NZ films but LOTR started filming and lucky for me Richard
Taylor liked the way I bought his characters to life and that was the start of
a 14 year friendship.
SWCP: You were one of the actors who appear in all
Narnia films, having played two roles in the first one. Is it stressful to
changing of costumes and make-up in the same movie?
S.R: Actually it’s not as bad as you think. I guess
that’s what I love about being a Creature Performer, because they don’t see
your face they can keep using you. Being actor trained really helps as you can
develop different characteristics for each character you play. In Prince
Caspian I played 6 different creatures and it was so much fun. If you have a look at the 3 main
Minotaur’s that I played in each of the Narnia films hopefully you can see the differences
I approached with each one. General Otmin from LWW I wanted to be your typical
Big Bad Black Minotaur. Asterius from PC I wanted to make him wiser and the
turning point were Narnian's no longer saw Minotaur’s as being associated with
the White Witch's army. And Tavros from VDT I wanted to make him just one of
boys, who unfortunately doesn’t know his own strength.
SWCP: Would you like to leave a message for your fans?
S.R: I guess... First of all I would just like to say
thank you all for the support and interest in what I have done and do. Growing
up I would never have dreamed I would be doing interviews for fan sites or even
traveling around the world to do Conventions. I am always amazed at how any
people come and see me and I love sharing stories with them, either at the
signing table or Q&A's.

as well, and I suppose the one thing I would love to leave with those of you
who read this is... Every morning you wake is a new day to explore, a time to
learn, to grow, to cherish the one you love and to love the one you cherish.
