Arti Shah é uma atriz e modelo que trabalha em filmes,Televisão,anúncios e campanhas de moda.Em Star Wars: O Despertar da Força,Shah interpretou o papel (físico) da Mas Kanata e foi também dupla dos personagens Gonk e Gwellis Bagnoro.

SWCP: Fale-nos do seu trabalho em Star Wars VII.

A.S: Tive muita sorte por ter interpretado um total de quatro personagens.Fui também  o Gonk /Power Droid (que é visto em Jakku quando a Rey vai ter com o Unkar Plutt para trocar as  suas 'porções'. Mas  também interpretei um personagem novo chamado Gwellis Bagnoro, que pode ser visto no castelo da Maz.Ele  (Mais tarde descobri que é um 'ele', apesar de ser referido como 'ela' no set) é um perito em falsificação de documentos de viagem.  Provavelmente não é o melhor dos amigos!  Outro novo personagem que foi apelidado de Fueller nos cenários e pode ser visto em alguns X-Wings de reabastecimentos dos X-Wings durante o reencontro entre o Poe e o Finn. Na verdade havia dois de nós: O Kiran Shah e eu.  O quarto e último personagem (e o meu maior papel) foi o Maz Kanata (fisicamente),juntamente com a Lupita Nyong'o que fez a voz e as expressões faciais desse personagem. 

Encontro-me a dizer isto para as pessoas em muitas entrevistas, mas só porque é a verdade. Trabalhar em Star Wars,foi literalmente uma das melhores experiências da minha vida. Além de estar recentemente noiva, é claro! Sinto-me muito honrada por ter a sorte de trabalhar com tanta gente maravilhosa e apaixonada neste projeto. Cada pessoa era um fã, mas foi tudo de forma profissional. Foi realmente incrível e uma experiência que eu nunca vou esquecer.

SWCP: Quais foram as maiores dificuldades que sentiu ao interpretar esses personagens?

A.S: Encarnar tantos personagens diferentes significava que eu tive de mudar o estilo do meu desempenho várias vezes. Por exemplo, com a Maz, seguia como a Lupita queria que me movesse. Ela faria a cena e eu observava os movimentos dela: A forma como ela costumava segurar o sabre de luz, para que lado ela estava a virar a cabeça e assim por diante. Então fazemos o que ficou conhecido como um 'passe de Arti', onde temos que filmar a cena novamente, mas comigo em vez dela. Assim foi um muito desafiador, mas uma experiência muito enriquecedora. Com o Gonk, a experiência foi completamente diferente. O traje era pesado e o peso ajudou a determinar como o droid se moveria. Não tive outra escolha senão mover-me lentamente, quase bamboleando. Considerando que o Gwellis Bagnoro estava sentado, facilitou as coisas um pouco já que não tive de pensar em como este personagem andaria, necessariamente (embora obviamente tenha caminhado um pouco com o traje, então eu acho que ele anda como eu!) O movimento principal do Gwellis era na sua cabeça. Para o Fueller, eu tive que usar um traje muito largo, que outra vez, de certa maneira, obrigou-me a andar de uma maneira específica. A equipa de criaturas FX fez um trabalho fenomenal em criar essas personagens maravilhosas e únicas.

SWCP: Tem angariado fundos para a Bliss,uma organização de apoio a bebés prematuros, no Reino Unido. De que forma se pode ajudar essa organização?

A.S: Eu sempre quis fazer algo para a caridade.  Como eu também nasci prematuramente com  6 semanas,quiz ajudar a Bliss para os bebés prematuros através do meu trabalho e já os ajudo há quase seis anos.  Se alguém quiser ajudar esta organização, a melhor maneira de fazê-lo seria visitar sua webpage:

SWCP: Medindo apenas 1,20 mtos de altura, deve deparar-se com alguns obstáculos diariamente mas também deve haver vantagens em ser pequena. Lembra-se de alguma?

A.S: Sendo pequena em estatura significa que tenho enfrentado muitos obstáculos ao longo da minha vida; Não necessariamente ser capaz de atingir certas coisas é talvez uma óbvia. E também ocasionalmente receber atenção indesejada. Mas tenho- me auto-ensinado a lidar com essas coisas. Ser único e diferente, é uma coisa boa. É importante amar quem você é, não importa a sua aparência e manter-se positivo. Você também precisa manter um senso de humor sobre as coisas. Houve uma ocasião, quando ia trabalhar numa manhã, havia um grupo de crianças com os seus professores na plataforma do comboio. Enquanto eu passava, uma professora foi segurar a minha mão, obviamente que me confundiu com um dos seus alunos. Quando ela percebeu o seu erro e se desculpou, ambos rimo-nos. Embora, pensando bem, talvez seria fixe ter ido com eles na viagem da escola!

SWCP: Participou em `Os Guardiões da Galáxia´onde encarnou o papel do Rocket.Como foi essa experiência?

A.S: Basicamente era a referência de movimento e o stand-in para o Guaxinim Rocket, ao lado do Sean Gunn, que era efetivamente o Rocket nas filmagens. Foi uma experiência bem-humorada. Enquanto o Rocket era fisicamente muito pequeno (menor do que eu na verdade). Eu tive que usar um top com uma foto da sua cabeça no meu peito para que os outros membros do elenco tivessem uma linha de visão. Em termos de personagem, ele era maior que a vida! Muito espirituoso e inteligente. Então tentar encarnar essa confiança e estilo foi interessante.

 Eu usava um fato verde, que é um processo um pouco diferente do que a captura de movimento. Há imagens de mim no Blu-ray nos bastidores, caso você esteja curioso sobre como parecia tudo isso antes de os animadores maravilhosos aparecem e fazerem a sua magia. A melhor parte de todo o processo para mim, foi na verdade empunhar a arma do Rocket durante a "cena de herói" (que é quando os guardiões podem ser vistos a andar em câmara lenta em grupo no final do filme). A arma era enorme e super pesada! Tenho que encontrar uma réplica para ter em casa!

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos fãs de Star Wars?

A.S: Para todos os adoráveis fãs de Star Wars, gostaria de dizer: "Obrigado por todo o vosso apoio e por fazerem de `O Despertar da Força ‘um enorme sucesso. Sempre acreditem em vós próprios e nunca desistam dos vossos sonhos. Estou ansiosa por conhecer muito mais de vós no futuro! "Que a força esteja com todos vocês".

Arti Shah is an actress and model who works for films,Television,commercials and corporate modeling campaigns.She played the role of Maz Kanata in Star Wars VII and was also a double for some characters such as Gonk and Gwellis Bagnoro. 

SWCP:  Tell us about your work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

A.S: I was very fortunate to have played a total of fourcharacters.  I was also the ‘Gonk’ / Power Droid (which is seen on Jakku as Rey goes to Unkar Plutt to collect her ‘portions’.  You get to see me in the costume on the SDCC reel). But I also played a brand new character named Gwellis Bagnoro, who can be seen in Maz’s Castle.  He (I later found out it’s a ‘he’, despite being referred to as a ‘she’ on set) is an expert forger of travel documents.  Probably not the nicest of chaps!  Another new character was nicknamed The Fueller on set, and can be seen refuelling some X-Wings during Finn and Poe’s reunion. There were actually two of us – Kiran Shah and myself.  The fourth and final character (and my largest role) was being the Maz Kanata Motion Capture Double, alongside Lupita Nyong’o. 

 I find myself telling this to people a lot in interviews but only because it’s the truth.  Working on Star Wars was literally one of the best experiences of my life.  Next to recently getting engaged of course! I really feel so honored that I was fortunate enough to have worked with so many wonderful and passionate people on this project.  Every single person was a fan, but went about everything in such a professional manner.  It was truly incredible and an experience I’ll never forget.

SWCP: What were the major difficulties that you felt to embody these characters?

A.S: Playing so many different characters meant I had to change my performance style each time.  For example, with Maz, I would follow how Lupita wanted her to come across and move.  She would do the scene and I would watch her movements:  which hand she used to hold the lightsabre, which way she’s turning her head and so on.    Then we’d do what became known as an ‘Arti Pass’, where we’d shoot the scene again but with me instead. So that was a very challenging but fulfilling experience.

 With the Gonk, the experience was completely different.  As it’s a heavy costume.  The weight helped determine how the droid would move. I would have no choice but to move slowly, almost waddling.  Whereas Gwellis Bagnoro was sitting, which made things a little easier as I didn’t have to think about how this character walked necessarily (though obviously I moved around in the costume so I guess he walks like me!)  The main motion for Gwellis was in his head, which I’d move in a certain way to help bring him to life on set.  For the Fueller, I had to wear a fat suit, which again somewhat forced me to walk a certain way.  The creature FX team did a phenomenal job in creating these wonderful, unique characters.

SWCP: You have helped to fundraising for BLISS an organization supporting premature babies, based in United Kingdom.  What is the best way for the people who want to help this organization?

A.S:I have always wanted to do something for charity.  As I was 6 weeks premature, I wanted to help Bliss for premature babies through my work and I’ve been supporting them for almost 6 years now.  If anybody wants to help this organisation, the best way to do so would be to visit their website https://www.bliss.org.uk/ where you can donate, fundraise and generally keep up-to-date with their fundraising events etc.

SWCP: Measuring only 4 feet high, you must have several obstacles in your daily life, but also must be some benefits in being a small person. Do you remember any?

A.S: Being short in stature has meant that I have faced many obstacles throughout my life; not necessarily being able to reach certain things is perhaps an obvious one (but then again, that’s what step stools are for right?)  I also occasionally receive unwanted attention.  But I have taught myself how to deal with these things.  Being unique and different is a good thing.  It is important to love who you are, no matter what you look like and to keep positive.  You also need to keep a sense of humour about things.  There was one occasion when, whilst on my way to work one morning, there was a group of children with their teachers on the train platform.  As I walked past, one teacher went to hold my hand, obviously mistaking me for one of her students.  When she realized her mistake and apologized, we both laughed it off.   Although, thinking back, maybe it would have been cool to have gone on the school trip!

SWCP: You participated in `Guardians of the Galaxy´ in the role of Rocket Raccoon.  How was that experience?

A.S: I was basically the movement reference and stand-in for Rocket Raccoon, alongside Sean Gunn, who was the on-set Rocket.  It was such a humorous experience.  While Rocket was physically quite tiny (smaller than me in fact).  I had to wear a top with a picture of Rocket’s head across my chest so that the other cast members had an eye line) in terms of character, he was larger than life!  Very witty and clever. So to try and embody that confidence and style was interesting.

 I wore a green suit, which is a slightly different process than motion capture.  There’s footage of me on the Blu-ray behind the scenes, in case you’re curious about how it all looked before the wonderful animators came along and worked their magic. The best part of the entire process for me though, was actually holding Rocket Raccoons gun during the ‘hero scene’ (that’s when the Guardians can be seen walking in slow motion in a group towards the end of the film).  The gun was huge and super heavy!  I might have to find a replica to keep at home!

SWCP: Would you like to send a message for Star Wars fans?
