Entrevistas SWCP: Richard Cunningham

ENGLISH VERSION:

The British actor Richard Cunningham has various presences in movies, television series and theatre such as: Law & order, Lucky Man, Sherlock Holmes: The Game of spies, among others. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,he played the role of Imperial General Sotorus Ramda.

SWCP: Tell us about your role on Rogue One.

R.C: General Ramda is in charge of activities on Skarif where the plans to the Death Star are kept. I shot several scenes with Ben Mendelsohn (Krennic) that did not make the final cut. The original idea was that there was a slow build up to the attack on Scarif and General Ramda was keeping an eye on proceedings and reporting back to Krennic, this also included a hologram of me reporting that there had been an intrusion. When the attack does happen General Ramda leaves all the dirty work to his Lieutenant (Adema) and makes himself scarce, as he is not entirely built for fighting!

SWCP: Were you a Star Wars fan before participating in this film? Do you have a favorite character?

R.C: I did like the original Star Wars Trilogy as it was very much part of my childhood. I had more interest in Horror Movies but Science Fiction certainly did grab my attention. I had the music to Star Wars on a cassette! I think my favourite character in the original series has to be Grand Moff Tarkin played by Peter Cushing, this is mainly to do with the fact that I had grown up watching the old Hammer Film horror movies and I thought he was a fantastic actor, brilliant in everything he did. And he was ingeniously recreated in ‘Rogue One’.

SWCP: Having already worked as an actor in various areas such as film, television and theater, in which one of these do you like to work more? What is the most difficult?

R.C: I worked for nearly 25 years as a Stage actor but gradually TV and Film has taken over as I have grown older and more into a character actor. I loved working on the stage but the more work in Film and TV I have done I now get more satisfaction from filming, somehow the camera has the ability to energize your performance but you have to be careful to remain in the moment and as real as you can be otherwise you will come across as over the top, I think this makes acting for Film and TV quite hard as you really have to get used to that lightness of touch.

SWCP: Would you like to highlight differences between the regular Star Wars movies and Rogue One?

R.C: I guess the major difference between the main series and Rogue One is the fact that it’s a standalone movie – this enabled the film to take more risks with the storyline and obviously everyone dies including dear old General Ramda, one would think. Gareth Edwards direction certainly gave the film a darker quality, although humour does remain.

SWCP: You´re currently working on a movie (still in the production) titled ´ Imprisoned´. Can you tell us something about this movie or about your character?

R.C: The movie ‘Imprisoned’ is set in a mental hospital and my character is one of the inmates  he has killed and raped several women and is totally unhinged. In contrast I have just been filming a new drama for the BBC called ‘Rellik’ which is a serial killer murder story that plays out in reverse (‘Rellik’ is ‘Killer’ spelt backwards). I play a well-meaning Concierge but he isn’t great at his job - it’s directed by Sam Miller who is known for ‘Luther’ and ‘Fortitude’.

SWCP: What message would you like to send for the Star Wars fans in Portugal?

R.C: To all Star Wars fans in Portugal – Please come over to the dark-side and you too can experience pleasant sunny climes such as Scarif! Thank you so much for all your support and love, Star Wars would be nothing without the fans!
