Entrevistas SWCP: Harley Durst

Harley Durst é um ator/duplo e especialista em animação de criaturas tendo trabalhado em filmes como: Thor-Ragnarok,Mulher-Maravilha,Wolverine,entre outros.Em Solo: Uma História de Star Wars,interpretou o papel do Moloch.
SWCP: Fale-nos acerca do seu personagem no filme Solo.

H.D: Interpretar o papel do Moloch foi de longe o trabalho mais desafiante da minha carreira. Toda a ação que você vê é ao vivo, sem CGI,o que significa que o protetor de cara do capacete do Moloch e todas as expressões faciais é feito em animatronic. O equipamento de animatronic em si é muito pesado e é montado a partir de um sistema de apoio de uma mochila. Eu tive que usar óculos de vídeo com uma câmera montada no meu peito, apontada aos meus pés, para poder ver onde andava,precisei de navegarem  túneis escuros, muitos passos e até sobre água, ao mesmo tempo usando elevadores de três polegadas.

SWCP: Já era fã de Star Wars antes de trabalhar neste filme?

H.D: Sim, crescendo desde criança numa pequena cidade da Austrália eu absolutamente amei o filme original de Star Wars.Não era um grande fã das prequelas da trilogia,então quando estava a trabalhar no Reino Unido nas rodagens de Wonder Woman,nem sequer considerei trabalhar nos atuais filmes de Star Wars como presumi que seria principalmente tudo feito em CGI e não ao vivo;como eu estava errado! Quando fiz um teste de tela para o papel do Moloch fiquei encantado pelo departamento de criaturas, equipa de duplos e efeitos especiais. O live-action e a atenção aos detalhes realmente traz esses filmes para a vida.

SWCP: É também especialista em animatronics de criaturas.Qual foi até agora,o seu trabalho mais gratificante nesta área? 

H.D: Interpretei a voz do Kong, bem como o controlador de cabeça de animatronic, operador de Voodoo,numa versão teatral do King Kong. A criatura do Kong pesava cerca de uma tonelada e ficou com seis metros de altura,o que levou três operadores de Voodoo e dez marionetistas acrobáticos no palco para dar vida ao Kong.

SWCP: Aprendeu Kali,uma arte marcial das Filipinas para fazer as cenas de luta com o ator Aaron Eckhart em `Eu Frankenstein´.Porque escolheu especificamente esta arte marcial para o ajudar a trabalhar neste papel?

H.D: O realizador, Stuart Beattie, queria ter uma sequência de luta totalmente feita em Kali.O Aaron tinha aprendido Kali durante os seis meses que antecederam as filmagens e era muito bom nisso. Fui contratado como o duplo do ator quando ele estivesse a lutar com o Raul Otto, apenas três semanas antes de filmar essas cenas.Fui contratado por causa do meu movimento de acrobacias e manobração de criaturas e nunca tinha feito qualquer luta de Kali antes...O Aaron Eckhart na verdade saiu da nossa primeira sessão de treinamento em conjunto já que eu não podia acompanhá-lo na sequência de luta, então treinei muito duramente. Não demorou muito para ganhar o respeito do duplo do Aaron, é absolutamente crucial fazer concessões para o ator a se apresentar no seu melhor e acima de tudo estar no controle constante para não lhe causar qualquer ferimento.A principal dificuldade com Kali é que as mãos estão desprotegidas e com a intrincada e rápida coreografia, é muito fácil atingi-los por acidente.Om eu único objetivo era nunca bater Aaron nas mãos... objectivo cumprido e a luta ficou incrível!

SWCP: Já foi o duplo de atores de renome como o Hugo Weaving e o Tom Hiddleston.Recorda-se de alguma situação engraçada ou invulgar que tenha ocorrido durante as rodagens com algum actor que dobrou?

H.D: Tem havido muitas experiências engraçadas ao trabalhar ao lado de alguns dos grandes atores nesta indústria, muitas das quais não seriam adequadas para mencionar neste formato, infelizmente, às vezes você apenas tem de estar lá! Vou dizer que ter trabalhado com o Tom Hiddleston e com o Taika Waititi em  Thor:Ragnarok, foi uma experiência incrível. As palhaçadas por trás das cenas nas filmagens enquanto também se ia produzindo a um nível de trabalho muito elevado,foi algo de outro mundo.
Embora estivesse a dobrar o Loki, também fui chamado para ser o duplo do Chris Hemsworth como Thor por um dia... Isso foi depois de os dois principais duplos se terem magoado ao fazerem umas acrobacias, era um salto mortal sobre uma escada num mercado com muita gente. Eles tinham filme suficiente pela frente e precisavam apenas de uma filmagem por trás e de perfil. Apesar do facto de eu ser principalmente vegan e os meus braços são um terço do tamanho dos do Chris ', o diretor sabia que  poderia esconder o ângulo e a ação. A cena nunca foi incluida na montagem final, mas foi apresentada nos extras da versão digital.
Este foi realmente um momento para me recordar,pois quando era criança sempre adorei a cena em que o Luke Skywalker fez um mortal em andamento com o Yoda nas suas costas durante a sua formação em Dagobah e precisava recriá-la como um super-herói num filme da Marvel! Viva o Thor Vegan!

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos fãs de Star Wars?

H.D:  Gostaria de agradecer a todos os fãs de Star Wars pelo apoio e entusiasmo, tem sido realmente incrível. Sendo uma parte do universo de Star Wars, é um verdadeiro sonho tornado realidade e estou muito grato pela experiência que nunca irei esquecer.

Harley Durst has been working in the film industry as a stunt performer and a creature movement specialist in movies like: Thor-Ragnarok, Wonder Woman, Wolverine, among others. In Solo: A Star Wars Story, he played the role of Moloch.
SWCP: Tell us abit more about your character on Solo: A Star Wars Story. 

H.D: Playing Moloch is by far the most challenging work of my career. All of the action you see is live, no CGI, that means Molochs helmet face shield and all facial expressions is animatronic. The animatronic rig itself is very heavy and is mounted from a backpack support system. I actually had to wear video goggles with a camera mounted on my chest pointing at my feet so I could see where to step, as I had to navigate dark tunnels, lots of steps and even through water, all while wearing 3inch lifts.

SWCP: Were you a Star Wars fan before working on this film? 

H.D: Yes, growing up as a kid in a small country town in Australia I absolutely loved the original Star Wars films. I was not a huge fan of the Prequel Trilogy so when I was working in the UK filming Wonder Woman I did not even consider perusing work on the current Star Wars films as I assumed it would be mostly CGI and not live action, how wrong I was. When I came in for a screen test for Moloch I was blown away by the creature department, special effects and stunt team. The live action and attention to detail really brings these films to life.
SWCP: You're also specializes in animatronics of creatures. What was until now, your more rewarding job in this area? 

H.D: I played the Voice of Kong as well as the animatronic head controller, Voodoo operator, in a theatre version of King Kong. The Kong creature weighted in at 1.1 tonnes and stood 6m tall, it took 3 Voodoo operators and 10 acrobatic puppeteers onstage to bring Kong to life.

SWCP: You learned Kali, a martial art from the Philippines to make the fight scenes with actor Aaron Eckhart in `Frankenstein ´. Why did you choose this martial art specifically to help you on this role? 

H.D: The director, Stuart Beattie, wanted to have a fully blown Kali fight sequence. Aaron had been learning Kali is 6 months leading up to filming, and was very good at it. I was hired as the stunt double to the actor he would be fighting, Socratis Otto, just 3 weeks before filming these scenes. I was hired because of my acrobatics and creature movement and had never done any Kali before ...
Aaron Eckhart actually walked out of our first training session together as I couldn't keep up with him in the fight sequence, so I trained as hard and as often as I could. It didn't take long to earn respect, the Aarons stunt double it is absolutely crucial to make allowances for the actor to perform at their best and most of all to be in constant control to not cause them any injury.
The main difficulty with Kali is that the hands are unprotected and with the fast, intricate choreography it is very easy to hit them by accident. My only goal was to never hit Aaron on the hands ... Which I achieved, and the fight turned out amazing!

SWCP: You have ever been the double of renowned actors such as Hugo Weaving and Tom Hiddleston.Do you remember some funny or unusual situation that has occurred during the filming? 

H.D: There has been many a funny experience working alongside some of the greats in this industry, not many of which would be suitable to entertain in this format, unfortunately, sometimes you just have to be there! I will say that working with Tom Hiddleston and Taika Waititi on Thor, Ragnarok was an incredible experience. The behind the scenes antics on set whilst also producing very high level of work was out of this world.
Although I was doubling for Loki I was also called to set one day to double Chris Hemsworth as Thor ... This was after the two main stunt doubles injured themselves doing the stunt, it was a running somersault font over a crowded market stairway. They had enough footage from the front and needed one shot from behind and profile. Despite the fact that I am mostly vegan and my arms are a third the size of Chris ', the director knew he could get away with the angle and action. The scene never made it to the final cut but it is featured in the extra features of the digital release. This was a real bucket list moment for me, as a kid I always loved the scene where Luke Skywalker did a running frontsault with Yoda on his back during his training on Dagobah and I got to recreate it as a superhero in the Marvel film! Long live Vegan Thor!

SWCP:  What message would you like to send for Star Wars fans? 

H.D:  I would like to thank all of the Star Wars fans for their support and enthusiasm, it has been really awesome. Being a part of the Star Wars universe is a real dream come true and I am so grateful for the experience, one that I will never forget.
