Entrevistas SWCP: Gwendoline Yeo

A atriz Gwendoline Yeo é originária de Singapura, tendo-se mudado para os E.U.A desde muito jovem. Tem participado em diversos filmes e séries televisivas como: Desperate Housewives, Chuck, Jag, General Hospital, etc. É também atriz vocal, onde tem sido a voz de vários personagens de videojogos e séries de animação; em Clone Wars interpretou os personagens Nala Se, Cato e Peppi Bow. 


SWCP: Além da actuação, adora também música área em que se especializou no instrumento musical chinês “Gu-Zheng”. Gostaria de participar num filme em que pudesse tocar esse instrumento? 
G.Y: Muito poucas pessoas me perguntam sobre a minha Cítara; grandes pontos para os Portugueses! lol. Seria um papel de sonho – ser capaz de incorporar a minha habilidade musical num personagem. Mas gostaria que ele fosse inserido de forma natural. Adoro actuar em papéis históricos - e posso-me ver a fazer algo onde a minha personagem é uma rainha ou uma concubina que toca como forma de se exprimir. Penso que poderia ser realmente dinâmico e sexy!

SWCP: Foi coroada Miss Chinatown /USA em 1998/99. Esse título ajudou-a a lançar-se na 7ª arte? 
G.Y: Para dizer a verdade era uma menina muito pateta e desastrada – usava óculos e aparelho e era muito gozada. Como um patinho feio, participar nos concursos de beleza transformou-me, mas só no exterior. O meu interior, o meu coração, é ainda muito vulnerável e sou uma pessoa profundamente sensível e que passou por muito. E o pacote enquanto um todo parece ter-me ajudado realmente na minha arte. Actuar, ironicamente, é sobre a narração da verdade. Mesmo enquanto estou a fingir, estou a dizer a verdade! Espero que isto não seja demasiado confuso para traduzir. Mas sim, ganhar o concurso, definitivamente ajudou. Fui contratada para fazer alguns spots comerciais, contratei um agente e a partir daí fiz trabalhos de voz e televisão e finalmente filmes.

SWCP: Que tal foi ter interpretado o papel de uma espiã chinesa na série “Chuck”? 
G.Y: Interpretar "Cho Mei-Ling" a espia chinesa foi, sem dúvida, um dos meus papéis favoritos. Eu fazia Tae Kwon Do nessa altura, portanto foi o treino perfeito porque tive de fazer algumas das minhas próprias cenas sem duplos, o que foi divertido. Tinha dois actores duplos, mas o coordenador de duplos olhou para mim e disse "Tu podes fazer um pouco disto!" fiquei muito assustada no início - fiz trabalho em arame pela primeira vez e fiz uma roda no ar enquanto segurava duas pistolas - foi uma experiência assombrosa. A parte da actuação foi fácil - por alguma razão canalizei "a espia" facilmente (lol) penso que fui uma, numa vida passada.

SWCP: Fale-nos um pouco acerca da sua participação na série animada Clone Wars 
G.Y: O director Dave Filoni telefonou-me para casa e fiquei atordoada - ele disse que tinha escrito uma personagem Jedi pensada para mim! Perguntou-me se queria o papel e eu disse "uh, SIM! duh." Foi o papel da Jedi asiática Kalifa no final da 2ª temporada. Ele conheceu-me quando fiz o papel da Primeira-Ministra Nale Se na 1ª temporada e nós demo-nos bem. Então ele pediu-me fazer a personagem Peppi Bow que tem uma espécie de sotaque da ilha de Singapura. Depois, ele pediu-me para fazer também a Cato Parasitti, a criatura má que sibila quando fala. Mas o último foi de facto o papel de um Jedi. Foi um sonho realizado. A minha vida está agora completa (lol). No mundo das vozes, posso ser tudo! Sim, sou uma atriz asiática, mas aqui, a raça não significa nada e até ser humano, também não significa nada e posso fazer de criaturas esquisitas - adoro isso.

SWCP: Gosta mais de actuar no teatro ou em filmes e séries? 
G.Y: É mais o papel e não o meio. Se são papéis de voz, televisão, filmes, ou até anúncios comerciais - é realmente sobre o quanto divertido é o papel e como é fixe essa experiência. Se eu me sentir arrebatada no set e esquecer-me que estou a "trabalhar" então, sou uma rapariga muito, muito feliz.

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs? 
G.Y: Primeiro de tudo agradecer por serem fãs, fãs de Clone Wars e de outros projetos em que participei. Se estou a ter um dia duro, as palavras de encorajamento dos fãs mantêm o meu espírito em alta e significa muito para mim ter aquele tipo de amor num negócio de "cortar a garganta". Obrigado por continuarem a gostar do meu trabalho e acreditar em mim!

The actress Gwendoline Yeo was born on the tiny island nation of Singapore. She moved to U.S.A as a teenager. Gwendoline has been participating in several movies and TV series: Desperate Housewives, Chuck, Jag, General Hospital, etc. She is also a voice over actress and she has been the voice of various videogames characters and animated series. In Clone Wars she interpreted the characters Nala Se, Cato and Peppi Bow.

SWCP: Besides acting you also love music, having specialized in the musical Chinese instrument "Gu Zheng". Would you like to participate in a movie where you could play this musical instrument? 
G.Y: Very few people ask about my Zither, big points for the Portugese! lol. That would be a dream role -- to be able to incorporate my musical skill into a character. But I would want it to be organically woven in. I love acting in period pieces -- and I could see doing something where my character is a queen or concubine and plays this as a way to express herself, I think it could be really dynamic and sexy!

SWCP: You were crowned Miss Chinatown/USA in 1998/99. Did this title help you to be successful in the 7th. art? 
G.Y: I was actually a very dorky girl -- glasses and braces and was teased alot. Like an ugly duckling, doing the pageant transformed me, but only on the outside. My inside, my heart, is still a very vulnerable and deeply compassionate person who's been through alot. And the total package seems to really help my art. Acting, ironically, is about telling the truth. Even while I'm pretending, I'm telling the truth! I hope that's not too confusing to translate. But yes, winning the pageant definitely helped. I got offered a few commercials, got an agent, and from there did voice work and television and finally movies too.

SWCP: How it was to interpret the role of a Chinese spy in the series “Chuck”? 
G.Y: Playing "Cho Mei-Ling" the chinese spy was hands down, one of my favorite roles. I was doing Tae Kwon Do at the time, so it was perfect training because I had to do a couple of my own stunts which was so fun. I had a couple of stunt doubles but the stunt coordinator looked at me and said "you can do some of this!" I was so scared at first -- I did wirework for the first time and did a cartwheel in the air holding two guns -- it was an amazing experience. The acting part was easy -- for some reason, I channel "spy" easily lol, I think I was one in a past life.

SWCP: Tell us a little more about your participation in the animated series Clone Wars. 
G.Y: Dave Filoni the director called me at home and I was stunned -- he said he had written a jedi role with me in mind! He offered me the part and I said "uh YES! duh." That was the role of Asian Jedi Kalifa in the season finale of season 2. He got to know me when I played prime minister Nale Se in season 1 and we really hit it off. Then he asked me to do Peppi Bow doing a singaporean kind of island accent. Then he asked me to do Cato Parasitti the mean hissing creature as well. But the ultimate was actually playing a Jedi, it was a dream come true. My life is now complete lol. Also, in the voice world, I can be anything! Yes, I am an Asian actress, but here, race means nothing and even being a human being means nothing and I can play weird creatures and stuff -- I love it.

SWCP: Do you like more acting in the theater or in movies/series? 
G.Y: It's more the role then the medium. Whether it's voice roles, television or film, even commercials -- it really is about how much fun the role is and how cool the experience is. If I'm swept away on set -- and I forget I'm "working" then I'm a happy, happy girl.

SWCP: What message would you like to leave for your fans? 
G.Y: First of all THANK YOU for being a fan, a fan of clone wars and other projects I've done. If I'm having a tough day, words of encouragement from the fans keep my spirits up, it really means the world to me to have that kind of love in a cut throat business. Thank you for continuing to enjoy my work and believing in me!
