Entrevista SWCP: Steve Sansweet

Steve Sansweet foi o diretor do departamento de conteúdos e relações com os fãs na Lucasfilm durante 15 anos. Autor de vários livros de colecionáveis Star Wars é ainda proprietário da maior colecção privada de memorabilia da saga que está localizada no Rancho Obi-Wan.

SWCP: Quando e como começou a interessar-se pelo colecionismo de Star Wars? 

S.S: Eu cresci a adorar ficção científica e a ler muitos romances de alguns dos principais autores da altura. Eu também tive algumas das primeiros "fortalezas do espaço" e robôs de plásticos. Cerca de um ano antes de Star Wars aparecer, eu já tinha começado a colecionar velhos brinquedos do Espaço - Robôs japoneses, foguetões, etc. — e os itens de Star Wars tornaram-se parte disso. Quando surgiu “The Empire Strikes Back”, a colecção começou a centrar-se sobre a saga.

SWCP: Qual foi o seu primeiro item da sua coleção? 

S.S: A primeira peça — que ainda tenho — foi uma brochura colorida de marketing da 20th Century Fox que a Lucasfilm enviou para os promotores do filme no início de 1977, tentando levá-los a exibir Star Wars nos seus cinemas. Também enviaram aos jornalistas e eu "pesquei"a minha num cesto do lixo na redação de Los Angeles do Wall Street Journal. 

SWCP: Tem algum colecionável preferido? 

S.S: Eu não tenho realmente uma peça favorita, mas agora as minhas áreas favoritas de colecionismo são a arte e itens feitos pelos fãs - é uma espécie de arte folclórica da saga. 

SWCP: Pode falar-nos um pouco acerca do seu mais recente livro de Star Wars? 

S.S: O livro chama-se Star Wars: The Ultimate Action Figure Collection: 35 Years of Characters da Chronicle Books e a data de publicação será a 17 de Outubro. Tudo que posso dizer é que há um monte de personagens e figuras! Ele vai fornecer imensas  perguntas- trivia durante alguns anos! 

SWCP: O Rancho Obi-Wan foi remodelado recentemente e reaberto ao público. Que novidades pode realçar? 

S.S: Demorámos cerca de dois anos a remodelar e expandir o Rancho Obi-Wan para torná-lo uma experiência divertida, interactiva, semelhante à de um museu. Nós incorporámo-lo como uma fundação sem fins lucrativos na Califórnia e usamos a coleção de memorabilia de Star Wars para inspirar, educar e fornecer apenas diversão e uma chance para os geeks sairem à rua. Eu tenho estado muito ocupado com o livro há quase cinco meses,o que atrasou o programa completo, mas as associações em todos os níveis estão a progredir muito bem.

S.S: Sou membro honorário do SWCP desde 2007, assim sendo, faço parte da "família". Mas todos os fãs de Star Wars em todo o lado são parte de uma comunidade maravilhosa. Apesar de podermos gostar de aspectos diferentes da saga, ela nos une, nos inspira e fornece muita diversão. Espero ver pelo menos alguns de vocês no Rancho Obi-Wan no futuro. Até então, que a força esteja convosco… sempre!

Steve Sansweet was the director of content management and head of fan relations at Lucasfilm during 15 years. Author of several Star Wars books, he is also the owner of world´s largest private collection of SW memorabilia which is located in Rancho Obi-Wan. Steve was the first honorary member of SWCP.

SWCP: When and how did you begin to be interested for collecting Star Wars memorabilia? 

S.S: I grew up loving science fiction and reading lots of novels by some of the top authors of the time. I also had some of the early “space forts” and plastic robots. About a year before Star Wars came out, I started collecting older space toys—Japanese robots, rockets, etc.—and Star Wars items became part of that. By the time The Empire Strikes Back came out, the collection started centering on the saga.

SWCP: What was the first item of your collection? 

S.S: The first piece—which I still have—was a colorful marketing brochure 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm sent to movie bookers in early 1977, trying to get them to play Star Wars in their theaters. They also sent it to journalists, and I fished mine out of a wastebasket in the Los Angeles newsroom of the Wall Street Journal.

SWCP: Do you have any favorite collectible? 

S.S: I really don’t have one favorite piece, but my favorite areas of collecting right now are art and fan-made items — sort of the folk art of the saga.

SWCP: Could you tell us a little more about your new Star Wars book? 

S.S: The book is called Star Wars: The Ultimate Action Figure Collection: 35 Years of Characters from Chronicle Books and the publication date is Oct. 17th. All I can say is there are a LOT of characters and figures! It’ll provide fodder for trivia questions for years!

SWCP: Rancho Obi-Wan was recently remodeled and re-opened to the public. Which news can we see on the Rancho? 

S.S: We spent nearly two years remodeling and expanding Rancho Obi-Wan to make it a fun-filled, interactive, museum-like experience. We incorporated it as a non-profit California corporation and use the collection of Star Wars memorabilia to inspire, educate, and just provide fun and a chance to geek-out. I’ve been tied up with the book for nearly five months, so that has delayed a full outreach program, but memberships at all levels are progressing very nicely.(Information is at www.ranchoobiwan.org). SWCP: Would you like to leave a message for the Portuguese fans and collectors of Star Wars? 

S.S: I’ve been an honorary member of SWCP since 2007, so that make me part of “the family.” But all Star Wars fans everywhere are part of a wonderful community. While we may like different aspect of the saga, it binds us together, inspires us, and provides lots of fun. I hope to see at least some of you at Rancho Obi-Wan in the future.
