Joe Corroney tem trabalhado para a Lucas Film em
ilustrações, sketch cards,comics,posters e revistas na arte oficial de Star
Wars. O talento de Joe é também aplicado noutras editoras, fabricantes de vídeo
jogos e brinquedos como a DC Comics,Hasbro,West End Games, entre outros. Além
de Star Wars, este artista tem feito vários trabalhos relacionados com:Doctor
Who,GI Joe,Marvel e muitos mais.
SWCP: Como surgiu o convite para trabalhar na Lucas
Film?
J.C: Comecei a trabalhar para uma das suas
licenças, a West End Games, que produziu o Jogo de Role-Playing de Star Wars em
1996. Eu enviei algumas amostras do meu portfolio pelo correio precisamente
após me ter graduado no colégio de artes e logo algumas semanas depois, recebi
um telefonema de um dos editores que me quis contratar para produzir algumas
ilustrações de um dos seus novos livros de Star Wars. Ilustrei aproximadamente
dez ou onze livros diferentes para eles durante os anos seguintes até a
companhia abrir falência e ter perdido a licença. Alguns anos depois, comecei a
ilustrar para os novos livros de RPG de Star Wars da Wizards of the Coast. Consequentemente
aquele trabalho levou-me a trabalhar para a revista Star Wars Gamer e a para a
Star Wars Insider que por sua vez, me levou a trabalhar para a Lucasfilm
diretamente no departamento de arte da Holonet News, num universal site web
promocional do Episódio II: O Ataque dos Clones que até à sua estreia em 2002.
Posteriormente, criei arte para os Comics da Dark Horse, Topps e outros
titulares da licença que também produzem projetos oficiais de Guerras de Star
Wars.
SWCP: Frequenta vários eventos relacionados com
BD.Além de mostrar os seus trabalhos, é também uma forma de conviver com os
seus fãs?
J.C: Gosto de participar em convenções sempre que
posso. Durante os últimos anos passados, o meu tempo tornou-se cada vez mais
ocupado e assim nem sempre é fácil para eu poder dar uma escapadela às
convenções tantas vezes quanto gostaria, mas quando vou, a minha parte favorita
dos eventos é a interação com os fãs. Adoro partilhar o meu trabalho online e
receber o feedback respetivo mas não é realmente o mesmo em comparação com a
avaliação genuína e o entusiasmo sobre o meu trabalho com os fãs de Star Wars
ao vivo. Inspira-me sempre e normalmente vou depois para casa e no meu estúdio
estou logo pronto para desenhar mais Star Wars para todo a gente.
SWCP: Em que área da ilustração gosta mais de
trabalhar?
J.C: Adoro a narração de histórias na ilustração,
não importa se sejam livros de banda desenhada, ilustrações ou simples
ilustrações que representam uma história grande ou pequena, uma cena de ação ou
um momento introspectivo emocionante. Sempre que tenho a possibilidade de
desenhar para Star Wars em qualquer meio, é sempre uma oportunidade excitante
para mim.
SWCP: Sabemos que irá estar na Star Wars
Celebration Europe II.O que irá apresentar neste grandioso evento?
J.C: Estou ansioso pela visita à Alemanha e
conhecer todos os fãs europeus de Star Wars novamente. Estive na Celebration
Europe de Londres em 2007 e foi uma experiência tão espantosa onde fiz tantos
grandes amigos lá. Só posso imaginar o quanto grande será próxima Celebration
que decorrerá na Alemanha. Estarei ilustrando outra impressão exclusiva do
evento que é sobre `O Regresso do Jedi´mas que será diferente da minha
impressão que fiz para a Celebration VI. Isto é tudo o que realmente posso
dizer sobre isso até que a Lucasfilm revele os trabalhos artísticos no final do
ano.
SWCP: Em que projetos relacionados com Star Wars
está atualmente a trabalhar?
J.C: Recentemente fiz as ilustrações para o livro
de BD: Star Trek: The Next Generation uma série das Publicações IDW chamada
`Hive´que apresenta o conflito final com os Borg. Foi muito divertido desenhar
porque a história do Brannon Braga e da sua equipa de escritores foi tão fantástica.
Foi realmente uma aventura épica de Star Trek. Também estou a trabalhar na nova
obra de arte dos trading cards do Super-homem. E também para os Estúdios Steed
e para a série de BD do Sr. Peel e capas para a série a nova série de BD dos
Ficheiros-Secretos também uma publicação da IDW. Tenho igualmente mais projetos
de Star Wars no horizonte mas é demasiado cedo para me ser permitido
discuti-los agora mesmo.
SWCP: Caso fosse convidado, gostaria de apresentar
os seus trabalhos no Festival de BD da Amadora (FIBDA) http://www.amadorabd.com
que decorre anualmente em Portugal? Já ouviu falar deste festival?
J.C: Não tenho conhecimento desse festival mas
gostaria de participar nele um dia caso fosse convidado. Gosto de viajar e
conhecer fãs de todo o mundo; assim se a oportunidade surgir e haja
disponibilidade na minha agenda, eu aceitaria com agrado essa possibilidade.
SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos fãs
portugueses de Star Wars?
J.C: Penso que estamos numa época realmente
excitante para se ser um fã de Star Wars. Estamos a aproximar-nos de uma nova
terceira geração de filmes da saga SW e como o mundo cada vez está "mais
pequeno e mais pequeno “é realmente fantástico ver algo tão positivo e
inspirador como Star Wars, que junta fãs de todo o mundo. Penso que é
impressionante ter fãs em Inglaterra, Alemanha, Portugal e noutros países que
até conhecem os meus trabalhos de Star Wars e os apoiam. Para alguém como eu
que desenho todos os dias para o meu ganha-pão não há nada realmente mais
inspirador saber que as minhas obras podem alcançar e afetar tantas pessoas de
longe. Realmente devo tanto à língua universal de Star Wars por me dar uma
carreira como artista e quero realmente agradecer a todo o pessoal do Star Wars
Clube Portugal por também apoiarem o meu trabalho.

Joe Corroney
has worked for Lucas Film in illustrations, sketch cards, comic books, posters
and magazines for the official art of Star Wars. Joe´s talent is also applied
to other publishers, manufactures of videogames and toys, such as DC Comics,
Hasbro, West End Games, among others. Besides Star Wars, Joe has done several
works related to Doctor Who, GI Joe, Marvel Comics and many more.
SWCP: How did
the invitation come to work for Lucas Film?
J.C: I began
working for one of their licensees, West End Games, who produced the Star Wars
Role-Playing Game back in 1996. I submitted my portfolio samples to them in the
mail right after I graduated Art College and then a few weeks later I received
a phone call from one of the editors there who wanted to hire me to produce
some illustrations for one of their new Star Wars books. I illustrated about
ten or eleven different books for them over the next few years until the
company went bankrupt and lost the license. A few years later I began
illustrating for Wizards of the Coast's new Star Wars RPG books. Eventually
that led to work for Star Wars Gamer magazine and Star Wars Insider which in
turn led to me working with Lucas film directly on artwork for Holonet
News.com, an in universe promotional website for Episode II Attack of the
Clones leading up to its premiere in 2002. Eventually I created Star Wars art
for Dark Horse Comics, Topps and other licensees that produce official Star
Wars projects also.
SWCP: You
attend several events related with comics and sci-fi.Besides exposing your
works is also a way to live with your fans?
J.C: I love
attending conventions whenever I can. Over the last few years my schedule has
gotten busier and busier so its not always easy for me to get out to shows as
often as I used to but when I do my favorite part of the events is the
interaction with the fans. I love sharing my work online and getting feedback
but its really just not the same compared to the kind of genuine appreciation
and enthusiasm I get for my work from Star Wars fans in person. It always
humbles me and inspires me at the same time and usually I go back home to my
studio ready to draw even more Star Wars for everyone.
SWCP: In which
area of illustration do you like to work most?
J.C: I love
storytelling in illustration, whether its comic books or cover art or single
illustrations that depict a story, however big or small, either an action scene
or an emotional introspective moment. Whenever I get a chance to draw for Star
Wars in any medium it's always a really exciting opportunity for me.
SWCP: 4-we know
that you will be in Star Wars Celebration Europe II. What do you will present
in this popular event?
J.C: I'm
excited about coming to Germany and meeting all of the European Star Wars fans
again. I was at Celebration Europe in London back in 2007 and it was such an
amazing experience, I made so many great friends there. I can only imagine how
great the next Celebration will be in Germany. I will be illustrating another
exclusive print for the event, it's a Return of the Jedi themed print, but it's
different than my recent Celebration VI print. That's all I can really say
about it until Lucas film reveals the artwork later this year.
SWCP: In which
projects are you currently working?
J.C: I recently
wrapped up illustrating a Star Trek: The Next Generation comic book series for
IDW Publishing called "Hive" which featured a climactic final
conflict with the Borg. That was a lot of fun to draw because the script by
Brannon Braga and his team of writers was so great. It was really an epic Star
Trek adventure. I'm also working on new artwork for a Superman trading card
set, covers for Boom! Studios Steed and Mrs. Peel comic book series and covers
for IDW Publishing's new X-Files comic book series too. I have more Star Wars
projects on the horizon as well but it's too early for me to be allowed to
discuss them right now.
SWCP: In case
you are invited, would you like to participate in a comic’s festival in
Portugal? Will be held in our country FIBDA
Which is the
largest event of this kind with international projection? Do you know this
festival?
J.C: I'm not
aware of this festival but I would love to attend someday if I was invited. I
love traveling and meeting fans from all over the world so if the opportunity
came up and it worked for my schedule I would gladly jump at the chance.
SWCP: what
message would you like to leave for the Portuguese fans of Star Wars?
J.C: I think
this is a really exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. We're moving into a new,
third generation of Star Wars films now and as the world gets smaller and
smaller it’s really great to see something so positive and inspiring like Star
Wars bringing fans from all over the world together. I think it's great that
fans in England, Germany, Portugal and other countries even know about my Star
Wars artwork and support it as fans. To someone like me who draws every day for
a living there's nothing truly more inspiring personally than knowing my
artwork can reach and affect so many people from so far away. I really owe so
much to the universal language of Star Wars for giving me a career as an artist
and I really want to thank everyone from Star Wars Club Portugal for supporting
my work too.
