Entrevistas SWCP: Christian Alzmann

Christian Alzmann é um ilustrador e diretor de arte da ILM em São Francisco que te desenhado para filmes de ficção científica e fantasia como: Inteligência Artificial, Star Wars: Episódio II,Guerra dos Mundos, Cowboys & Aliens,entre outros.

 

SWCP:Parece que começou a interessar-se pela ilustração quando ainda frequentava o jardim-de-infância, sendo o Darth Vader uma das suas principais inspirações. O que o atraiu tanto neste icónico personagem?

C.A: O que me atraiu mais no Vader foi o facto de ser tão icónico. É difícil não gostar daquele capacete de robot de samurai brilhante, preto. Mas eu realmente acho que foi porque era tão difícil adquirir imagens dos filmes nessa época. Não havia nenhuma imagem da Internet e muito poucos livros com imagens de Star Wars durante o primeiro ano ou logo depois de ter estreado o primeiro filme. Acho que senti que se eu quisesse ver os personagens que gostava, teria de desenhá-los.

SWCP: Foi quando começou a frequentar a escola de arte que achou que viria a ser um profissional nesta área?

C.A: Nunca pensei que poderia vir a ser um artista profissional até ser contratado para trabalhar na ILM após a minha graduação. Mesmo então, não estava convencido até um par de anos de trabalho, que teria a capacidade suficiente para este emprego. Só após esses dois anos é que fiquei convencido.

SWCP: Fale-nos do seu trabalho no episódio II de Star Wars.

C.A: Fui um artista concetual na ILM trabalhando em seções diferentes do filme. No início fiz muitos desenhos arquitetónicos para a perseguição ao Speeder através de Coruscant. Aquele onde eles vão atrás da Zam. Projetei edifícios, placards luminosos e cores. Posteriormente, trabalhei na fábrica dos droides bem como um pouco da batalha final. Na maior parte do tempo, trabalhei no Hardware a reunir máquinas, mísseis e lançadores de armas. Fiquei muito emocionado por ter algo a ver com tudo aquilo. Um verdadeiro sonho tinha-se realizado.

 

 

SWCP: É um fã do saudoso ilustrador Ralph McQuarrie?

C.A: Sou um enorme fã do Ralph. Quando era ainda uma criança, comprava tudo o que tivesse a ver com a sua arte e copiei muitas das suas peças.

Em 2004 sentei-me com ele nos arquivos da Lucasfilm a comtemplar todas as suas pinturas originais e esboços. Realmente assombroso. Eu ainda o via de vez em quando durante estes anos e assisti ao seu funeral no ano passado. Ele era um homem super simpático e mudou a arte dos filmes para melhor.

SWCP: Que mensagem quer enviar aos fãs portugueses de Star Wars?

C.A: Não há nada melhor que os fãs de Star Wars. É realmente por causa do vosso amor por esses filmes e personagens que os novos filmes da saga estão novamente a ser criados. Continuem assim malta! Há tanto ainda no horizonte para ser explorado.

Christian Alzmann is an illustrator and VFX art director for ILM in San Francisco who has been drawing for science fiction/fantasy films such as:A.I,Star Wars: Episode II,War of the Worlds, Cowboys & Aliens, among others.  

SWCP: It seems that you began to interest for illustration when you were still at kinder-garden, being Darth Vader one of your inspirations. What attracted you so much in this iconic character?

C.A: What attracted me was that Vader was so iconic. It's hard to not love that shiny, black samurai robot helmet. But I really think it was because it was so hard to get imagery from movies back then. There were no Internet images and very few books with images of Star Wars for the first year or so after it came out. I guess I felt that if I wanted to see the characters I loved that I had to draw them.

SWCP: It was when you began to study in school of arts that you thought that you would be a professional in this area?

C.A: I didn't think I could be a professional artist until I got hired by ILM upon graduating. Even then it wasn't until a couple of years of working until I convinced myself I had enough ability to do the job. Until I had a couple of years of work under my belt that I convinced.

SWCP: Tell us about your work in Star Wars: Episode II.

C.A: I was a concept artist at ILM working on different sections of the film. At first I did a lot of architectural designs for the Speeder chase through Coruscant. The one where they go after Zam. I designed buildings, districts lighting and color. Eventually I did work on the droid factory as well as some of the end battle. Mostly I worked on hardware like assembly machines, missiles and weapons launchers. I was thrilled to have anything to do with it. A real dream comes true.

SWCP: Are you a fan of the late artist Ralph McQuarrie?

 

C.A: I am a huge fan of Ralph's. As a kid I bought everything I could with his art in it and copied many of his pieces. In 2004 I got to sit with him in the Lucasfilm archives and look at all of his original paintings and sketches. Really amazing. I would see him every now and then over the years and attended his funeral last year. He was a super nice man and changed the art of film for the better.

SWCP: What message would you like to leave for the Portuguese fans of Star Wars?

C.A: There are just no better fans than Star Wars fans. It is really because of their love for these movies and characters that new Star War movies are in the making. Keep it up guys! There is so much on the horizon to be excited about.
