SWCP: O que o levou a enveredar por esta profissão?
T.T: Cresci numa pequena cidade do Texas. O meu pai era um rancheiro de gado. Enquanto crescia, queria desenhar livros de BD e ser ator. O desejo de vir a ser um duplo realmente não me ocorreu nessa altura. Quando fui para o colégio, juntei uma equipa de esgrima e comecei a estudar combates. Era obcecado por filmes de piratas e sempre quis aprender a usar uma espada. Tenho de admitir, entretanto, antes de querer usar uma espada já antes tinha preferido um sabre de luz. Vi Star Wars no cinema quando tinha 6 anos, e a partir daí tornei-me um fã. Depois de estudar, tive um emprego no início dos anos 90 numa Feira Renascentista. Esse foi o meu primeiro verdadeiro emprego de duplo em que combinava tudo que eu tinha feito por quanto: montando cavalos, luta de espadas, e atuação. Depois disto comecei a fazer demonstrações de duplos em espetáculos ao vivo, inclusive no show de duplos WaterWorld nos Estúdios Universal em Hollywood. O meu primeiro grande papel como duplo foi em `Piratas das Caraíbas´. Eu tinha feito pequenos papéis e comerciais antes disso, mas aquele filme modificou tudo para mim.
SWCP: Fale-nos um pouco acerca da sua participação em `Piratas das Caraíbas’. Parece que chegou a “lutar “com o Johnny Deep…
T.T: Esse filme foi uma grande experiência para mim. De fato a experiência de uma vida! Sou um de apenas uma mão cheia de duplos que trabalharam em todos os quatro filmes... E confiantemente trabalharei no quinto filme também, que está previsto ser lançado em 2015. Como era um espadachim experimentado, acabei por lutar com muitos dos atores principais, inclusive com a Keira no primeiro filme, com o Johnny no segundo, e com muita gente no terceiro filme. A luta com o Johnny em Piratas 2 foi um verdadeiro regalo. Não só estávamos com os Exumas (um grupo de um bar de praia do sudoeste das Bahamas), mas também com o Johnny que foi muito amistoso já que nos conhecíamos um ao outro desde o primeiro filme, portanto acabou por ser fácil. Alguns grandes planos são com o Theo Kypri que foi o duplo do Johnny Deep, mas o Johnny fez todos os close-ups a lutar. E ele teve de lutar com um remo contra a minha espada o que tornou ainda mais difícil a sua tarefa. Ele foi formidável. Lutamos sem parar durante aproximadamente 10 horas, e no fim do dia pedi-lhe para tirar uma foto com ele. Antes de tirarmos a foto, ele inclinou-se para mim e disse, 'Hoje foi um grande dia. Você é um realmente grande lutador". Podem ver essa foto no meu website e dizerem o quanto estou todo inchado e sorridente prestes a estourar de orgulho. Nunca me esquecerei daquele momento para o resto da minha vida.
SWCP: Foi também um Zombie em Resident Evil:Extinction.Foi difícil atuar com toda aquela maquilhagem?
T.T: O Resident Evil 3 foi um trabalho louco! Tínhamos planeado estar no México para treinarmos com a Mila durante um par de dias. Acabamos por ficar algumas semanas, e como a produção tinha ficado para trás, acabamos por permanecer durante alguns meses como segunda unidade. Ficamos em Mexicali onde rondava uma temperatura de 113°F, e filmámos num lugar chamado Algedones que onde estava ainda mais calor:140°F (isto é 60°C!!).É um dos lugares mais quentes do planeta e está rodeado por dunas de areia. Os cenários eram assombrosos: partes de Hotéis Venezianos e Parisienses vindos de Las Vegas, inclusive a parte da Torre Eiffel (o resto foi acrescentado digitalmente). Depois de uma viagem de carrinha durante 30 minutos, começamos o nosso dia de trabalho às quatro da manhã diretamente para a maquilhagem. Demorava aproximadamente 5 horas! Usávamos tantas almofadas e aquele macacão cinzento, mais a maquilhagem. FOI QUENTE! Eu de fato sugeri que acrescentássemos luvas ao guarda-roupa para podemos subir a torre. Lembre-se de que era uma estrutura em metal exposta a uns 140°. Estava muito quente! Havia cinco duplos dos EU e um grupo do México. Nós cinco, usámos a maquilhagem prostética, portanto fizemos todas as mortes de perto. Se você vir a sequência atentamente, pode ver quantas vezes cada um de nós foi morto. Penso que fui morto 13 ou 14 vezes em apenas 6 minutos. O meu amigo Tim foi morto 16 vezes. A Mila é um estrondo a trabalhar e realmente talentosa. Ela fez 90 % do seu próprio material. Tive a oportunidade de trabalhar neste filme durante um intervalo de Piratas 3. Quando terminámos, fui diretamente trabalhar no local que pensei onde seria rodado o último filme dos Piratas das Caraíbas.
SWCP: Foi o duplo do ator Stanley Tucci.Como foi essa experiência?
T.T: Dobrei o Stanley Tucci num filme chamado `What Just Happened?´ A melhor parte desse trabalho foi ter contracenado com o Robert De Niro. Posso dizer orgulhosamente que o Robert De Niro bateu com a minha cabeça numa janela de um carro! Já que a câmara estava localizada atrás da minha cabeça, De Niro foi capaz de fazer toda a cena comigo. Ele chamou-me 'maldito saco de merda´e bateu com a minha cabeça contra a janela que foi manipulada para se quebrar. Grande dia. Foi certamente um destaque na minha carreira!!
SWCP: Sabemos que é um grande fã de Star Wars. Como surgiu essa paixão? Tem algum personagem favorito?
T.T: Como já disse anteriormente, vi Star Wars no cinema em 1977. Tinha seis anos de idade. Quem sabe o que eu estaria a fazer agora se não tivesse visto aquele filme! O meu personagem favorito é naturalmente o Han Solo. Em 1981, tive um calendário do `Império contra ataca ‘que trazia todos os aniversários dos atores enumerados. No aniversário do Harrison Ford, enviei-lhe um postal em que tinha desenhado o Han Solo disparando um Blaster contra um Stormtrooper reduzindo-o em pedaços. Juntei-lhe uma foto da minha turma da 5ªclasse e pedi-lhe uma foto sua. Poucos meses depois, recebi uma foto sua assinada. 25 Anos depois, estava a trabalhar no filme ` Indiana Jones e o reino da caveira de cristal ‘no Havaí. Um dia durante o almoço, preparámos um bolo e cantamos Feliz Aniversário ao Harrison. Depois da canção recontei-lhe a história sobre o postal que lhe tinha enviado em criança. Podia morrer feliz nesse dia. Desde uma criança com 10 anos que enviou um postal a uma celebridade até chegar a um duplo com 35 anos que festejou o aniversário dessa celebridade com ele num filme no Havai!! Quem teria acreditado?
SWCP: Quer enviar alguma mensagem aos fãs dos atores/duplos?
T.T: Sigam os vossos sonhos! Tudo é possível se vocês acreditarem que é possível. Sou um rapaz de uma cidade com 300 pessoas e agora passo a minha vida que a viver um sonho como duplo de Hollywood! Espero trabalhar na geração seguinte dos filmes de Star Wars. A Menos que eu esteja a trabalhar novamente em Piratas 14! Muito obrigado por se interessarem pela minha carreira. Sinto-me muito humilde e abençoado.

Trampas Thompson is an actor/stuntman who participated in several blockbusters such as Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull, Resident Evil Extinction and Pirates of the Caribbean.
SWCP: What made you decide to start this profession (stuntman)?
T.T: I grew up in a small town in Texas. My dad was a cattle rancher. When I was growing up, I wanted to draw comic books and be an actor. The thought of being a stuntman hadn't really occurred to me. When I got to college I joined the fencing team and starting studying stage combat. I was obsessed with pirate movies growing up and always had wanted to learn to use a sword. I have to admit, though, before I wanted to use a sword I wanted a lightsaber. I saw Star Wars in the theater when I was 6 years old, and from then on I was hooked. After studying, I took a job in the early 90s jousting at the Renaissance Faire. This was my first real stunt job and it combined everything I'd done so far: riding horses, sword fighting, and acting. After that I started doing live stunt shows, including the Water World Stunt Show at Universal Studios in Hollywood. My first real break as a stuntman was Pirates of the Caribbean. I'd been doing small jobs and commercials before that, but that film changed everything for me.
SWCP: Tell us about your work in Pirates of the Caribbean. It seems that you fought with Johnny Deep...
T.T: Pirates has been a great experience for me. In fact the experience of a lifetime! I'm one of only a handful of stuntmen who have worked on all 4 of the films...and hopefully I'll work on Pirates 5 as well, which is slated to come on in 2015. Because I was a skilled swordfighter, I ended up fighting with many of the principle actors, including Keira in the first Pirates, Johnny in the second, and pretty much everyone in the third film. The fight with Johnny in Pirates 2 was a real treat. Not only were we in the Exumas (a group of sandbar type keys south west of the Bahamas), but Johnny was very friendly and we'd known each other from the first film, so it made it easy. Some of the wide shots are with Theo Kypri who was Johnny's stunt double, but Johnny did all of the close-up fighting himself. AND he had an oar against my sword which made it all the more difficult for him. He was great. We fought non-stop for about 10 hours, and at the end of the day I asked to take a picture with him. Just before the photo snapped, he leaned in and said, "That was a great day. You're a really great fighter." You can see the picture on my website and tell by my swelling chest and smile that I'm about to burst with pride. I'll never forget that moment for the rest of my life.
SWCP: You were also a Zombie in Resident Evil: Extinction.Was it hard to play with all that makeup?
T.T: RE3 was a crazy job! We were meant to be in Mexico to train with Mila for a couple of days. That turned into a few weeks, and as the production fell behind we ended up staying for a few months on second unit. We were staying Mexicali which was about 113°F, and shooting in a place called Algedones which was 140°F (that's 60°C!!). It's one of the hottest places on the planet and all sand dunes. The sets were amazing: pieces of the Venetian and Paris Hotels from Las Vegas, including part of the Eiffel Tower (the rest was added digitally). After a 30 minute van ride from set, we'd start our day at 4am getting into makeup. It usually took about 5 hours! We were wearing so many pads and those grey jumpsuit, plus the makeup. IT WAS HOT!! I actually suggested we add gloves to the wardrobe so we could climb the tower. Remember it was a metal structure in 140° heat. It got hot! There were 5 stuntmen from the US and a group from Mexico. The 5 of us had all the close-ups prosthetics, so we did all the close kills. If you watch the sequence closely, you can see how many times each of us gets killed. I think I got killed 13 or 14 times in 6 minutes. My friend Tim got it 16 times. Mila was a blast to work with and really talented. She did 90% of her own stuff. I was able to shoot this movie on a break from Pirates 3. When we were done, I went straight back to work on what I thought would be the last Pirates movie. Little did I know!
SWCP: You were the double of Stanley Tucci.How it was this experience?
T.T: I doubled Stanley Tucci on a film called `What Just Happened? ´ The best part about that job was working with Robert De Niro. I can say proudly that Robert De Niro has slammed my head through a car window! Since the camera was on the back of my head, De Niro was able to do the full scene with me. He called me a "Fucking Shit bag" and slammed my head against the window which was rigged with a squib to smash. Great day. A career highlight for sure!!
SWCP: We know that you are a big fan of Star Wars. How this passion appeared? Do you have any favorite character?
T.T: As I said before, I saw Star Wars in the theater in 1977. I was 6 years old. Who knows what I'd be doing if I hadn't seen that movie! My favorite character is of course Han Solo. In 1981, I had an Empire Strikes Back calendar that had all of the actors' birthdays listed. On Harrison Ford's birthday, I sent him a card I had drawn of Han Solo blasting a Stormtrooper to bits. I enclosed my 5th grade class picture and asked for his picture. A few months later, I received a signed picture from him. 25 years later, I was working on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in Hawaii. One day at lunch a cake was brought out and we all sang Happy Birthday to Harrison. After the song I recounted the story to him. I could have died happy that day. From a 10 year old kid sending a card to a celebrity to a 35 year old stuntman celebrating that celebrity's birthday with him on a film in Hawaii!! Who would have believed it?
SWCP: Would you like to leave a message for the fans of stunts?
T.T: Follow your dreams! Anything is possible if you believe it's possible. I'm a kid from a town of 300 people and now I spend my life living a dream as a Hollywood Stuntman! Hopefully, I'll get to work on the next generation of Star Wars movies. Unless I'm on Pirates 14 that is! Thanks so much for taking an interest in my career. I am very humbled and blessed.
