Entrevistas SWCP: Michael Nankin

Michael Nankin é um realizador e produtor americano que tem trabalhado em vários filmes e séries televisivas como: Defiance,RedFaction,Caprica,Heroes,Eureka,Invasion,entre outros. 

SWCP: A série de ficção científica `Defiance´terminou a sua primeira temporada em Portugal, tendo conquistado os portugueses fãs de ficção científica. Fale-nos um pouco do seu trabalho nesta série.

M.N: O meu cargo é "diretor produtor", que significa dirigir um número dos episódios e supervisionar os realizadores dos episódios restantes. DEFIANCE, como muitos programas de TV americanos, possui os seus escritores e produtores de escrita baseado em Los Angeles enquanto que as rodagens da série acontecem em outros locais menos caros.

DEFIANCE é filmado em Toronto, Canadá, e eu sou o responsável por tudo o que acontece lá. Eu supervisiono o guarda-roupa, design de produção e os castings, bem como fazer o meu melhor para manter o elenco e a equipa feliz e a trabalhar bem. Eu não escrevo sobre a série, mas sou quem interpreta os scripts. Colaboro com os produtores em Los Angeles, bem como o estúdio e a rede da internet. Criativamente, a minha abordagem para a série é "encontrar a humanidade" em cada cena. O grande benefício de uma série que envolve raças de extraterrestres, é que você começa a examinar o que significa ser humano.

SWCP: É verdade que o seu primeiro filme foi feito em 1976 e que se chamava ´Gravidade’? Que recordações tem dessa época?

M.N: Na verdade, o meu primeiro filme foi chamava-se  "The Advent of the No-Belch Cucumber"que eu fiz quando eu tinha 10 anos de idade, depois de me ter sido oferecida pelo meu avô uma câmara de filmar de 8mm.Era uma história sobre um pepino que comeu uma família. Eu fiz o `Gravidade´ como um estudante universitário. Era uma paródia de filmes de ciência horrível da década de 1950 que foi apresentado na escola. O orçamento do filme foi de US $300 e o filme ganhou um prémio de US $1.000 no primeiro concurso. Foi quando decidi tornar-me num cineasta. `GRAVIDADE´ venceu dezenas de festivais de cinema. Foi um trabalho de amor e algo que me fez rir. Não tinha ideia que seria apreciado por qualquer outra pessoa ou ter qualquer tipo de sucesso. O filme foi filmado numa câmara de 16mm Bolex emprestada que só podia trabalhar durante 20 segundos antes de parar. 

SWCP: Como surgiu a oportunidade de se envolver na nova série de Battlestar Galactica em 2005?

M.N: Eu não estive envolvido desde o início no projeto. Enquanto BATTLESTAR estava a começar sua primeira temporada, eu estava a desenvolver uma mini-série com o David Eick (produtor executivo de BATTLESTAR) para a rede Syfy e o projeto foi cancelado. Pedi ao David se ele poderia pôr-me a dirigir a BATTLESTAR porque eu precisava de dinheiro. Eu não tinha visto a série, mas depois de ter trabalhado nela em apenas dois dias, eu percebi que eu tinha caído em algo maravilhoso. E continuei a dirigir oito episódios.

SWCP: É um fã de ficção científica? O que o atrai mais nesta temática?

M.N: Não me importo sobre o género.Já filmei faroeste, piratas, Sci-Fi, drama familiar, histórias policiais, terror, comédia e para mim o trabalho é o mesmo; como você faz os personagens viver; como você faz as cenas emocionantes e reais; Como é que diz a verdade? O meu género favorito é aquele que ainda não fiz. 

SWCP: Para si, o que é mais difícil? Realizar ou produzir um filme?

M.N: Realizar é o mais difícil e mais gratificante trabalho no planeta.

SWCP: Que mensagem quer enviar aos seus fãs?

M.N: É muita gentileza sua, assumir que eu tenho fãs. Se houver algum, a minha mensagem é: Divirta-se!

Michael Nankin is an American director and producer who has worked in several renowned films and TV series such as: Defiance, Battlestar Galactica, Red Faction, Caprica, Heroes, Eureka, Invasion, among others.

SWCP: The sci-fi series `Defiance´ is about to finish the first season in Portugal, having captivated Portuguese science fiction fans. Tell us a bit more about your work on this series.

M.N: My job title is "directing producer" which means I direct a number of the episodes and supervise the directors of the remaining episodes. DEFIANCE, like many American TV shows, has its writers and writing producers based in Los Angeles while the actual shooting of the series happens in other, less expensive locations. DEFIANCE is shot in Toronto, Canada, and I am in charge of everything that happens there. I supervise wardrobe, production design, casting, as well as do my best to keep the cast and crew happy and working well. I do not write on the show, but am the one who interprets the scripts. I collaborate with producers in Los Angeles as well as the studio and the network. Creatively, my approach to the show is to "find the humanity" in every scene. The great benefit of a show involving races of aliens is that you get to examine what it means to be human. 

SWCP: Is that true that your first film was a short film called `Gravity ‘in 1976? What memories do you have of these times?

M.N: Actually, my first film was called "The Advent of the No-Belch Cucumber" which I made when I was 10 years old, after having been given an 8mm movie camera by my grandfather. It was a story of a cucumber eating a family. I made GRAVITY as a college student. It was a parody of the awful 1950's science films I was subjected to in school. The budget of the film was $300 and the film won a $1,000 prize in its first contest. That was when I decided to become a filmmaker. GRAVITY went on to win dozens of film festivals. It was a labor of love--something that made me laugh. I had no idea it would be appreciated by anyone else or have any kind of success. The film was shot on a borrowed hand-wind Bolex 16mm camera that could only run for 20 seconds before stopping. It kept the pace of the film sharp. 

SWCP: How the opportunity come to get involved as a regular director for the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series in 2005? 

M.N: I was not involved at the inception of the project. While BATTLESTAR was starting its first season, I was developing a mini-series with David Eick (executive producer of BATTLESTAR) for the Syfy network and the project was terminated. I asked David if he could get me a directing job on BATTLESTAR because I needed the money. I had not seen the series, but after working on it for 2 days, I realized I had fallen into something wonderful. I stayed on and directed 8 episodes. 

SWCP: Are you a sci-fi fan? What attracts you more on this theme?

M.N: I don't really care about genre. I have shot westerns, pirates, sci-fi, family drama, police stories, horror, comedy--and for me the job is the same--how do you make the characters live; how do you make the scenes exciting and real; how do you tell the truth? My favorite genre is the one I haven't done yet.

SWCP: What is most difficult for you: Direct or produce a film?

M.N: Directing is the hardest and the most rewarding job on the planet.
