A Britânica Sophia Crawford é uma atriz/dupla que trabalhou em diversos filmes e séries de renome como: Power Rangers,Buffy,G.I Joe,Poseidon,Colateral,entre outros.

SWCP: Após a morte da sua mãe quando você ainda tinha apenas 12 anos de idade, atravessou um período de rebeldia que a levou a uma certa independência e a um desejo ardente para viajar. Acha que de certo modo, esse período da sua vida a ajudou na sua futura carreira como atriz?

S.C: Quando a nossa Mãe faleceu, o nosso Pai ficou com a difícil tarefa de criar sozinho cinco crianças. Ele viajava cerca de 30 milhas até à cidade todas as manhãs para trabalhar no Sunday Times e muitas vezes voltava para casa à noite. Sou trigêmea e enquanto eramos deixadas sozinhas as minhas irmãs e eu tornávamo-nos bastante infames na nossa aldeia por sermos muito desobedientes. Eramos uns espíritos livres e causávamos muitos sarilhos. Uma combinação de várias coisas aconteceu antes e depois da morte da minha mãe que me levaram a querer deixar Inglaterra. A viagem de autocarro por terra desde Londres até à Índia com a minha irmã, como adolescente realmente abriu-me os olhos a muitas coisas neste mundo. Duvido que me tornasse alguma vez atriz/ dupla se não tivesse feito essa viagem. Foi um tipo de coisa que só acontece uma vez na vida. Enquanto vivi esta aventura fiquei determinada a encontrar um novo caminho na vida e isto levou à minha decisão de mudar-me para a Tailândia. Vivi sozinha em Bangkok durante um ano onde ensinei o inglês no Hotel Central Plaza. O hotel pediu-me para fazer de modelo para a sua brochura e isto conduziu-me a trabalhar com uma agência e a obter mais trabalho como modelo. 

Disseram-me que Hong Kong era o coração da indústria cinematográfica asiática e assim mudei-me lá para tentar fazer uma carreira na atuação. Foi aqui que comecei o treino em artes marciais e trabalho de duplos. Foi um caminho duro cheio de muitos obstáculos mas sinto-me grata pelas experiências de aprendizagem. Tornei-me imediatamente uma fã de filmes de ação de Hong-Kong e de todas as suas estrelas.

SWCP: Foi também em Hong Kong que se treinou com os duplos do grupo do Jackie Chan.Como foi essa experiência?

S.C: Foi uma experiência incrível. Tive muita sorte por me ter sido dada essa oportunidade excitante enquanto estive lá. Os filmes de artes marciais eram abundantes nessa altura. Foi uma época muito especial do cinema de Hong Kong. Isto foi o ponto de partida para o que ficou conhecido como a Era “as Meninas com Armas”. Houve uma procura para os ocidentais interpretarem papéis de vilões e aconteceu precisamente quando eu lá estava nessa altura. Depois do meu primeiro pequeno papel, tive um desejo ardente de treinar-me para me tornar numa atriz de filmes de ação. Visitei vários estúdios a procurar trabalho. Conheci os duplos do grupo do Jackie Chan e treinei regularmente com eles em Kowloon Park. Também me preparei com a Yukari Oshima quando ela estava disponível. Eu estava agora na companhia de talentos assombrosos e aspirei a parecer-me com eles, sobretudo como a Yukari.

SWCP: Foi a dupla da Ranger Rosa no filme `Os Poderosos Morphin Power Rangers’. Fale-nos um pouco sobre o seu papel nesse filme.

S.C: O Jeff Pruitt pediu-me para me juntar à equipa de duplos dos Power Rangers em 1994. Trabalhei na série de T.V. e no primeiro filme que dobrei a Pink Ranger e outros personagens. Até então, eu procurava papéis interinos em Hollywood e embora eu tivesse um pouco de êxito, não havia muitos papéis com mulheres a lutar. Na maior parte dos filmes de ação naquela altura, os homens ficavam com os papéis dos heróis e raramente davam às mulheres uma possibilidade de fazerem algo como nós fazíamos em Hong Kong. Depois de cinco anos a trabalhar em filmes de Hong Kong eu tinha ficado um pouco "mimada “porque as mulheres muitas vezes lutavam ao lado dos homens. A maior parte dos atores eram também peritos em artes marciais e extremamente duros. Quando vim para Hollywood foi diferente. Antes de surgirem as séries da Xena e da Buffy as mulheres não tinham grandes chances de fazer lutas de artes marciais.

No começo encontrei-me com vários produtores e diretores e todos eles me diziam que gostavam de mim mas não sabiam como comercializar o meu talento. Muitas vezes me disseram que os homens não queriam ver mulheres a lutar; apenas serem salvas pelo herói. Fiz alguns projetos e contracenei com o Patrick McNee e com o Robert Vaughn num episódio-piloto da série de televisão `´Kung Fu´, mas foi nunca foi incluído na própria série.

Mesmo assim, tinha tal amor pela ação que não me importei muito se me tornaria numa estrela ou não portanto entrei para os duplos. Power Rangers foi o meu primeiro trabalho como dupla em filmes americanos e eu absolutamente adorei. Cinco dias por semana eu dirigia-me de carro até Valência/ Califórnia e lutava com monstros. Foi um daqueles trabalhos em que você teria sempre vontade de ir trabalhar porque estávamos a divertirmo-nos imenso.

A equipa de duplos e eu praticávamos ginástica e artes marciais todo o dia. Nunca parávamos! A nossa energia era ilimitada! 

O Jeff Pruitt e eu começamos a namorar no filme Power Rangers na Austrália. Casamos e estivemos juntos durante quase dezanove anos. Acho que certas coisas acontecem na vida por uma razão. Depois de Power Rangers fiz WMAC Masters e depois Buffy.Quando trabalhei em Buffy tinha um contrato exclusivo para a série, e não me permitiam fazer outros projetos. Fui também a primeira dupla a ser creditada no genérico de uma série de televisão. Acredito que o enorme êxito de Buffy, Xena e MMPR ajudou a apresentar mulheres combatentes no mercado dominante da América. Hoje cada série de ficção científica parece ter personagens que tentam imitar o estilo da ação de artes marciais femininas que fizemos em Buffy.

SWCP: Foi também a dupla de ídolos musicais como a Madonna ou a Fergie.Em que tipo de cenas dobrou estas celebridades? Foi em vídeos musicais?

S.C: Sim, dobrei a  Madonna, Britney Spears,Jessica Simpson, Shakira e a Fergie. A maior parte desses trabalhos foram para vários vídeos musicais e anúncios. Tenho de dizer que fiquei muito entusiasmada quando conheci a Madonna pela primeira vez. Recebi uma chamada do coordenador de duplos, o Chuck Picerni e ele disse-me que tinha um trabalho para dobrar uma atriz mas eu teria de ser audicionada primeiro. Um mensageiro veio à minha casa e reuniu todo o meu portfolio. Disseram-me que "se" ficasse aprovada que deveria ir para uma casa em Beverly Hills.A atriz quis dar primeiro "uma olhada" para determinar se o meu corpo se parecia com o seu o bastante para dobrá-la para a BMW-STAR.

Deram-me as direções para ir ter a uma casa com portões de ferro maciço. Quando estava a ligar para o sistema de comunicação interna, passou um autocarro cheio de turistas que começaram a tirar imensas fotos. Uma voz no sistema de comunicação interna disse-me para entrar. Era a Madonna. Eu reconheci a sua voz imediatamente.

Vi que ela era muito bela mesmo sem maquilhagem. Levou-me a um escritório onde ela e o Guy Ritchie me fizeram algumas perguntas sobre duplos. Eles gozaram um com outro e perguntaram se eu poderia cortar e colorir o meu cabelo como o dela. A Madonna ficou ao meu lado enquanto o Guy fazia a comparação já que seria ele a realizar o vídeo. E passei no exame.

Trabalhei com a Madonna em BMW e noutros projetos depois disto, inclusive o vídeo musical “Die Another Day”e um pequeno papel interino que fiz com ela para uma promoção realizada pelo Guy Ritchie para o filme “Swept Away” em que duas de nós fazíamos de mulheres ricas embriagadas que se suspendiam perto duma piscina. Gostei de todos os trabalhos que fiz com ela e respeito muito o quanto ela trabalha arduamente. Ela é um performer assombrosa e uma verdadeira profissional no que faz.

SWCP: Foi a primeira mulher ocidental a fazer um anúncio comercial para a televisão em Seoul na Coreia. Como foi essa experiência? 

S.C: Consegui esse trabalho através de uma agência de modelos em Hong Kong. Contudo, eu nunca me apercebi o quanto este anúncio era tão importante até ser cumprimentada no aeroporto por uma pequena fanfarra e escoltada para um grande jantar na cidade com alguns executivos importantes de negócios da Hyundai. Toda a gente foi muito hospitaleira. Eles mostraram-me as vistas de Seul e tiveram sempre uma grande atenção comigo. As rodagens do anúncio foram simples, passadas algumas horas já estava de volta para Hong Kong. Foi uma experiência única.

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs?

S.C: O meu marido recentemente fez um upload de um vídeo no YouTube sobre os bastidores no YouTube de nós a trabalharmos em Buffy e eu gostaria de agradecer muito aos fãs de Buffy pelos bastantes comentários bonitos. É bonito ser apreciado por todos pelo trabalho difícil que fizemos nessa série. O maior elogio que podemos ter é quando ouço uma menina a dizer, “Iniciei-me nas artes marciais por causa de a ter visto “Eu realmente quero agradecer a todos eles pelo incrível apoio que me têm dado.

The British stunt performer and actress Sophia Crawford participated in several renowned films and series such as: Power Rangers, Buffy, G.I Joe, Collateral, Poseidon, among others.

SWCP: After your mother died when you were only 12 years old, you passed through quite a rebellious period. This lead to an independent streak and a burning desire to travel. Do you think that this period of your life helped your career as an actress?

S.C: When our Mother passed, our Father was left with the difficult task of raising five kids alone. He travelled 30 miles into the city every morning to work at the Sunday Times and often came home late at night. I am a triplet and while left to our own devices my sisters and I became quite infamous in our village for being very naughty. We were free spirits and we got into a lot of trouble. A combination of things happened prior to and after my Mother’s death that led me want to leave England. The overland bus trip from London to India I went on with my sister as a teenager really opened my eyes to many things in this world. I doubt I would ever have become an actress/ stuntwoman if I had not gone. It was the kind of thing that only happens once in a lifetime. While on this adventure I became determined to find a new path in life and this led to my decision to move to Thailand. I lived alone in Bangkok for a year  

where I taught English at the Central Plaza Hotel. The hotel asked me to model for their brochure and that led to my working with an agency and getting more work as a model. I was told that Hong Kong was the heart of the Asian film industry and so I moved there to pursue acting. It was here that I began training in martial arts and stunt work. It was a tough road full of many obstacles but I am grateful for the learning experiences. I became an instant fan of Hong Kong action and all its stars.

SWCP: It was in Hong Kong where you began training with stuntmen from the Jackie Chan group. How it was this experience?

S.C: It was an incredible experience. I was very lucky to have been given many exciting opportunities while I was there. Martial arts movies were abundant then. It was a very special time for Hong Kong cinema. This was the start of what became known as the “Girls with Guns” era. There was a need for westerners to play villains and I just happened to be there at the right moment. After my first small role I got a burning desire to train and become an action actress. I went around to the various studios looking for work. I met stuntmen from Jackie Chan’s Group and trained with them in Kowloon Park regularly. I also trained with Yukari Oshima when she was available. I was in awe of the amazing talent on display and I aspired to be like them - Yukari in particular. 

SWCP: You portrayed the Pink Ranger role in `The Mighty Morphine Power Rangers. Tell us a bit more about this role of yours.

S.C: Jeff Pruitt asked me to join the Power Ranger stunt team in 1994. I worked on the T.V. series and the first movie doubling the Pink Ranger and other characters. Up until then I had been pursuing mostly acting roles in Hollywood and although I had some success, there weren’t a lot of roles for fighting females. In most action films during that time the men were the heroes and the women were rarely given a chance to do anything like we did in Hong Kong. After five years working in Hong Kong films I had been a bit spoiled because the women often fought alongside the guys. Most actors were also skilled martial artists and extremely tough. When I came to Hollywood it was different. In the days before Xena and Buffy women weren’t allowed to do very much in the way of martial arts fights. In the beginning I met with several producers and directors and I was told they liked me but didn’t know how to market me. Often they would claim that men didn’t want to see women fighting at all; just being saved by the hero.

 I did some projects and got to co-star with Patrick McNee and Robert Vaughn in a spin-off pilot from the Kung Fu television series, but it was never made into a series itself. Still, I had such a love for action it didn’t matter much to me whether I was the star or not so I went into stunts. Power Rangers was my very first American stunt job and I absolutely loved it. Five days a week I would drive up to Valencia, CA and fight monsters. It was one of those jobs where you would look forward to going to work because we were having so much fun. The stunt team and I practiced gymnastics and martial arts all day long. We never stopped! Our energy was limitless. Jeff Pruitt and I started dating on the Power Ranger movie in Australia. We were married and have been together nearly nineteen years. I guess certain things happen in life for a reason. After Power Rangers I did WMAC Master’s and then Buffy. While on Buffy I was under an exclusive contract to the show and not allowed to do other projects. I was also the first stuntwoman to get a regular screen credit in a television series. I believe the huge success of Buffy, Xena and MMPR helped introduce fighting females into the mainstream market in America. Today every sci-fi show seems to have characters trying to imitate the style of female martial arts action we did on Buffy. 

SWCP: You were also a double for several musical idols such as Madonna and Fergie. In which type of scenes did you double these celebrities?

S.C: Yes, I doubled Madonna, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Shakira and Fergie. Most of these jobs were for various music videos and commercials. I have to say that I was quite excited when I met Madonna for the first time. I got a call from stunt coordinator Chuck Picerni and he told me he had a job to double an actress but I would have to be checked out first. A messenger came to my house and collected my headshot and resume. I was told that “if” I was approved I was to go to a house in Beverly Hills. The actress wanted a “look-see” to determine if my body resembled hers enough to double her for BMW-STAR. I was given directions to a home with massive iron gates. As I pushed the intercom a bus full of tourists drove by and started snapping pictures. A voice on the intercom told me to come inside. It was Madonna. I recognized her voice right away. I thought she was very beautiful even without a stitch of make-up. She showed me into an office where she and Guy Ritchie asked me a few questions about stunts. They joked around with each other and asked if I would cut and color my hair like hers. Madonna stood next to me while Guy did the comparison since he was going to be directing. I did a little twirl and I passed the examination.

I worked with Madonna on BMW and several other projects after that, including the “Die Another Day” music video and a little acting role I did with her for a promo shot by Guy Ritchie for the film “Swept Away” in which the two of us played drunken rich women hanging poolside. I enjoyed all of the jobs I did with her and I respect how hard she works. She’s an amazing performer and a real pro at what she does.

SWCP: You were the first western woman to do a TV commercial in Seoul/ Korea. How it was this experience? 

S.C: I booked this job through a modeling agency in Hong Kong. However, I never realized the event was important until I was greeted at the airport by a small fanfare and escorted to a grand dinner in town by several high level business executives from Hyundai. Everyone was very hospitable. They drove me around the sights of Seoul and took great care of me. The shoot was simple, only a few hours long and before I knew it I was back in Hong Kong. It was a very unique experience.

SWCP: What message would you like to send for your fans?

S.C: My husband recently uploaded behind-the-scenes video on YouTube of us working on Buffy and I would like to say a big thank you to the Buffy fans that have made so many nice comments. It’s nice to be appreciated for all the hard work we did on the show. The biggest compliment of all is when I hear a girl say, “I took up martial arts because of watching you.” I really want to thank them all for the terrific support they’ve given me.
