Entrevistas SWCP: Sharmila Devar

Sharmila Devar é uma actriz americana que participou em diversas séries televisivas como Anatomia de Gray,Scandal,Chicago Hope,enttre outras.Como actriz vocal,Devar foi a voz da Ursa Wren na 3ª temporada da série de animação Star Wars Rebels.

SWCP: Fale-nos um pouco acerca do seu personagem na série Star Wars Rebels.

S.D: O meu personagem em Rebels é a Condessa Ursa Wren, da nobreza Mandaloriana, mãe de Sabine e a chefe do clã Wren.   Ela é uma mulher fascinante para se interpretar.  Ursa é uma forte guerreira, uma líder de sucesso e uma mulher poderosa.  E embora a honra da família seja de extrema importância para ela, talvez não seja tão boa quando se trata dos seus relacionamentos pessoais.  Particularmente com a Sabine, em que ela alterna entre ser orgulhosa e desafiada pela sua filha. Ursa sente que as regras são importantes e devem ser seguidos processos.  Não admira que ela ache a Sabine tão confusa! 

E acho muito interessante o orgulho, força e experiência dela, qualidades que muitas vezes são positivas para um líder ter, mas que podem ser uma fonte de fraqueza para ela.  Espero ter a oportunidade de explorar isso mais.  Por um longo tempo, ela tentou fazer um jogo duplo com o Império.  Como líder do clã Wren, ela tem a responsabilidade de fazer o que for preciso ao seu alcancer para manter os seus assuntos e sua família segura, o que a coloca numa posição onde trabalha com pessoas e ideologias que pessoalmente pode não gostar.  Mas, Ursa é uma boa política apesar de estar numa área cinzenta – alguns sacrifícios precisam ser feitos para um bem maior.  E ela não precisa dividir isso com você – você só precisa confiar que ela sabe o que é o melhor.  Ela é uma mistura interessante de claro e escuro, repressão e paixão. Na minha carreira, esses são os temas que mais gosto de explorar.

SWCP: Já era fã de Star Wars antes de participar nesta série?

S.D: No nosso crescimento, o meu irmão e eu éramos grandes fãs dos episódios IV-VI de Star Wars .O  Lando Calrissian foi o primeiro personagem não-branco, lembro-me  de que não importava se ele era negro, castanho ou branco – ele era apenas um tipo encantador mas enigmático.  E a princesa Leia foi um modelo de papel fantástico para mim como uma garota porque ela assumiu o controle da sua própria narrativa – e era atrevida, confiante, inteligente... E engraçada.  Além disso, eu adorava o romance entre a Leia e o Han Solo.  Para fazer a pesquisa sobre este projeto, re-assisti a todos os filmes várias vezes e gostei muito dos bastidores que aprendi com os episódios I-III – particularmente o episódio III.  E, graças ao meu irmão, li algumas fan-fiction sobre o Império e os Sith, que foram arrasadores!

 Recentemente, enquanto revia os nossos brinquedos antigos, a minha mãe encontrou uma figura de ação do Luke Skywalker que tínhamos quando eramos crianças.  Também me lembro de que o meu irmão tinha um boneco do Yoda super fixe e uma mini Millennium Falcon.  E tenho certeza que já me mascarei de Princesa Leia pelo menos num dia das bruxas!  

SWCP: Acha que a Sabine Wren apesar da sua juventude,tem o perfil adequado para unir e liderar os clãs dos Mandalorian contra o Império Galáctico?

S.D: Só posso dizer o que pensa a Ursa – e isso é "Vamos ver".  Seria uma fonte de grande orgulho para o clã  Wren, mas o mais importante é o que é melhor para o povo Mandaloriano. A Sabine esteve afastada por muito tempo.Para a Ursa, Sabine é a sua criança brilhante mas rebelde, e eu acho que é novo para a Ursa ver Sabine como um adulto e um possível líder.A  Ursa tem admirado  o crescendo destemor e coragem da Sabine, mas existem outras qualidades que também são necessárias para conduzir e unir os clãs Mandalorian com êxito.  Sabine tem essas qualidades? é o que iremos ver...

SWCP: Se já viu alguns filmes de Star Wars,que diferenças gostaria de destacar entre as histórias dos filmes e as de Star Wars Rebels?

S.D: Não sou perita em STAR WARS, mas achei realmente que Rebels me fazem lembrar um monte dos episódios IV e V e especialmente ROGUE ONE, que eu absolutamente adore.  Para mim, Rebels e os filmes de STAR WARS são ambos sobre residentes VS forasteiros, o bem contra o mal, a luz contra a escuridão – e como os nossos lugares em cada um destes campos, podem mudar dependendo das circunstâncias em que nos são colocados.

E como até mesmo uma única pessoa (que pode ser um outsider ou ter um passado trágico ou desarrumado), quando lutando pelo bem, pode fazer a diferença.  Cada ação conta. Também estou muito orgulhosa de fazer parte de um projeto que, em todas as frentes, permite às mulheres serem fortes, poderosas e salvarem o dia.  Acho que isso é muito fixe! Finalmente, lutamos para que o bem triunfe, mesmo se você tenha que se sacrificar por isso.

SWCP: Em que projectos está actualmente a trabalhar?

S.D: Eu tenho alguns projetos a decorrer. Atuei num filme no final do ano passado do qual estou realmente animada para ver o projeto terminado, provavelmente em junho.  Foi maravilhosamente filmado, outros atores e a equipa são tão talentosos, e a minha personagem era muito diferente do que o que fiz no passado.  Também tenho um comercial que foi dirigido pelo Craig Gillespie que tem sido passado nos EUA e na TV espanhola.  E espero que a Ursa vá voltar!

Desde que tenho aceite trabalhos de actriz, muitas vezes fica fora do meu controlo, também estou a trabalhar em alguns projetos de escrita: uma comédia de televisão que  co-escrevi,uma  série de livros infantis, e algumas  ideias futuras que eu adoraria fazer.  Também comecei a trabalhar com um grupo que faz treinamento de diversidade para grandes corporações e acho que é muito gratificante até agora.  Tenho saudades de estar no palco, por isso espero a oportunidade de fazer uma nova peça que vai aparecer em breve- mas sou super exigente com o trabalho de palco, então vamos ver.

Há uma frase famosa – não me lembro de quem disse isso e provavelmente estou parafraseando, mas que descreve os meus pensamentos : "O meu projeto favorito é sempre o próximo".   Então estou ansiosa para ver o que virá na próxima etapa para mim.

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos fãs de Star Wars?

S.D: Sinto-me tão humilde e entusiasmada por fazer parte de um universo tão icónico.  O mundo é atualmente um lugar bastante caótico e estou espantada em como o poder pode espelhar o Império e o lado negro no seu pior.  Eu sei que hoje em dia me possa sentir sem esperança – que, como eu, uma pessoa solitária, possa fazer qualquer tipo de diferença?

 Acho que diria a todos para se levantarem e lutarem pelo que acreditam, terem orgulho de quem são e compreenderem que a vossa individualidade, em última análise é o vosso maior presente.  É fácil manter a calma e espero que as coisas vão melhorar, ou que outra pessoa o fará melhor.  Mas se vocês acreditam em alguma coisa com todo o vosso coração, então têm que lutar por isso.

 E é claro,que a Força esteja convosco!

Sharmila Devar is an American actress who participated in several Television shows such as: Chicago Hope,Scandal,Grey´s Anatomy,among others.As a voice over,Devar was the voice of Ursa Wren in Star Wars Rebels.

SWCP: Tell us a bit more about your character on Star Wars Rebels.

S.D: My character on REBELS is the Countess Ursa Wren, Mandalorian nobility, Sabine’s mother and the head of Clan Wren.   She’s a fascinating lady to play.  Ursa is a strong warrior, a successful leader and a powerful woman.  And although family honor is of the utmost importance to her - she's maybe not so good when it comes to her personal relationships.  Particularly with Sabine, who she alternates between being proud of and challenged by. Ursa feels that rules are important and processes must be followed.  No wonder she finds Sabine so confounding!

And I find it really interesting that Ursa’s pride, strength and experience, qualities that are often positive for a leader to have, can be a source of weakness for her.  I hope I get the opportunity to explore that more.  For a long time, she has attempted to play a double game with the Empire.  As leader of Clan Wren, she has a responsibility to do whatever is in her power to keep her subjects and family safe, which puts her in a position where she is working with people and ideologies she might personally dislike.  But, Ursa is a good politician in that she lives in the gray area – some sacrifices need to be made for the greater good.  And she doesn’t need to share that with you – you just have to trust that she knows best.  She is an interesting mix of light and dark, repression and passion. In my career, those are the themes I most love to explore.

SWCP: Were you a Star Wars fan before worked in this animated show?

S.D:  Growing up, my brother and I were huge Star Wars Episodes IV-VI fans.  Lando Calrissian was the first non-white character I remember seeing where it didn’t matter if he was black, brown or white – he was just a charming but sketchy dude.  And Princess Leia was a fantastic role model for me as a girl because she took control of her own narrative – and she was saucy, confident, whip-smart… And funny.  Plus, I loved the Leia and Hans’ back-and-forth romance.  To do research on this project, I re-watched all the films multiple times and really enjoyed the backstory I learned with Episodes I-III – particularly Episode III.  And, thanks to my brother, I read some fan fiction about the Empire and the Sith, which was mind-blowing!

 Recently, when going through our old toys, my mom found a Luke Skywalker action figure we had as children.  I also remember my brother had a super cool Yoda puppet and a mini Millennium Falcon.  And I’m sure I went dressed up as Princess Leia for at least one Halloween!   

SWCP: Do you think that Sabine Wren despite his youth has the right profile to unite and lead the Mandalorian clans against the Galactic Empire?

S.D: I can only tell you what Ursa thinks – and that is “Let us see.”  It would be a source of great pride for Clan Wren, but the most important thing is what is best for the Mandalorian people.  Sabine has been away for a long time, and left in less than stellar circumstances.  To Ursa, Sabine is her brilliant but wayward child, and I think it is new for Ursa to see Sabine as an adult and a possible leader.  Ursa has grown to admire Sabine’s fearlessness and moxie, but there are other qualities that are also needed to successfully lead and unite the Mandalorian clans.  Does Sabine have those qualities? Let us see…

SWCP: If you've seen a few Star Wars movies, would you like to highlight a few differences between the stories of the Star Wars films and the Rebels?

S.D: I'm no STAR WARS expert, but I actually found REBELS to remind me a lot of EPISODES IV & V and especially ROGUE ONE, which I absolutely loved.  To me, REBELS and the STAR WARS films are both about insiders vs. outsiders, good vs. evil, light vs. dark – and how our places in each of those camps can shift depending on the circumstances in which we are placed.

And how even a single person (who might be an outsider or have a past that is tragic or messy), when fighting for good, can make a difference.  Every action counts. I also am really proud to be a part of a project that, on all fronts, allows women to be strong and powerful and save the day.  I think that is really cool! Ultimately, we fight so that good triumphs, even if you have to sacrifice yourself for it.

SWCP: In what projects are you currently working on?

S.D: I’ve got a few projects going right now. I acted in a film at the end of last year of which I’m really excited to see the finished project, most likely in June.  It was beautifully shot, the team and other actors are so talented, and the character I played was very different than what I’ve done on camera in the past.   I also have a commercial that was directed by Craig Gillespie that has been running on US and Spanish TV.  And hopefully Ursa will be back!

Since getting acting jobs is often out of my control, I’ve also been working on a few writing projects:  a television comedy pilot I co-wrote, a children’s book series, and a few feature ideas that I’d love to get off the ground.  I also have started working with a group that does diversity training for major corporations and I find it to be very rewarding so far.  I really miss being on the stage, so hopefully the opportunity to do a thought-provoking new play will come up soon – but I’m super picky with stage work, so we will see.

There is a famous quote – I can’t remember who said it and I’m probably paraphrasing, but it describes my thoughts to a T: “My favorite project is always the next one”.   So I’m looking forward to seeing what is around the bend for me.

SWCP: What message would you like to send for Star Wars fans?

S.D: I am so humbled and excited to be a part of such an iconic universe.  The world is a pretty chaotic place right now, and I’m amazed at how the powers that be mirror the Empire and the Dark Side at their worst.  I know these days I can feel hopeless – like, how can I, a lone person, make any sort of difference?

 I guess I would tell everyone to stand up and fight for what they believe, to be proud of who they are, and to understand that their individuality is ultimately their greatest gift.  It is easy to keep quiet and hope that things will get better, or that someone else will make it better.  But if you believe in something with all your heart, you have to fight for it.
