Entrevistas SWCP: Michael Bell

Michael Bell é um ator profissional que participou em centenas de séries de animação como ator vocal e ensinando também técnicas de animação de voz há mais de 30 anos.
Em Star Wars Rebels,Michael é a voz do General Dodonna da Aliança Rebelde.

SWCP: Fale-nos um pouco sobre o seu trabalho na série de animação Star Wars Rebels.

M.B:  Enviaram-me uma voz correspondente á do ator original que fez o papel(General Dodonna) junto com outros atores. Eu tive a sorte suficiente de ser capaz de fazer a sua voz e ter conseguido o papel. O elenco era muito acolhedor, assim como o realizador.

SWCP: Já era fã de Star Wars antes de participar nesta série?Tem algum personagem favorito?

M.B: Eu não era fã, mas certamente que gostei do filme como todos os outros. Pediram-me para fazer a ADR de alguns atores originais do filme (A ADR é a adicão de um substituto de voz). Lucas não queria tantos sons britânicos, que era estranho já que ele escolheu para filmá-lo em Inglaterra com poucos atores americanos e todo o elenco britânico.

SWCP: Confirma que foi a voz do General Willard no filme Star Wars:Uma nova esperança?Sabe-nos dizer porque escolheram a sua voz em vez da do ator original?

M.B: Dobrei vários atores no filme além do General Willard (Jovens tropas federais lutando e morrendo,etc). Quiseram que eu dobrasse o ator original no Conselho que questiona o Darth Vader e é sufocado por ele(Almirante Motti?). Fiz esse trabalho,mas senti que o desempenho do ator original era bom e disse ao George Lucas para o manter assim. E ele seguiu o meu conselho. Claro, tinha que trabalhar,e então dobrei a voz do Comandante Willard por razões que Lucas não especificou. Há alguns anos atrás,fui a uma festa de um colega ator e o Mark Hamill  estivemos a falar sobre os filmes e quando eu mencionei que tinha dobrado uma personagem de Star Wars,ele disse "Não", eu disse "Sim, eu fiz", ele foi inflexível até eu explicar. Foi uma revelação para ele. Tinhamos trabalhado juntos num outro desenho animado chamado ´Mina e o Conde´ há alguns anos atrás, e o assunto estranhamente nunca surgiu.

SWCP: É também ator ao vivo,onde destacamos as suas prestações nas séries televisivas de Star Trek: Deep Space Nine e Next Generation.Como foi essa experiência?

M.B:  Uma grande experiência. Fui escolhido em Star Trek pelo Cory Allen, o realizador e aprovado pelo Gene Roddenberry, que me relembrou que eu trabalhei para ele no episódio piloto de "E em seguida veio Bronson" que ele produziu. Eu sempre quis trabalhar em Star Trek e finalmente tive essa chance. Curiosamente,nunca fui convidado para quaisquer convenções de Star Trek. Hummm, pergunto-me por quê? Numa recente Convenção de banda desenhada, alguns dos membros do elenco de Star Trek vieram ter comigo para me cumprimentarem.

SWCP: Em que projetos está atualmente a trabalhar?

M.B: Dobrei recentemente uma personagem na nova série do Voltron, um remake de uma série que estrelou na década de 80. Estou muito envolvido no sentido divulgar os filmes da minha filha a atriz Ashley Bell, incluindo o seu documentário ´Love and bananas´. Você pode ver o trailer em http://loveandbananas.com/ 

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos fãs de Star Wars?

M.B: Nenhuma mensagem em particular, talvez que eles escrevam para os produtores de Star Wars Rebels e peçam para ver mais o General Dodonna. Isso seria muito fixe.

Michael Bell is a professional voice actor who participated in hundreds of animated series having also teaching voice animation technique for over 30 years.In Star Wars Rebels, Michael is the voice of General Dodonna from the Rebel Alliance.
SWCP: Tell us a little more about your work in the animated series, Star Wars Rebels. 

M.B: ​  I was sent a voice match of the original actor who played the role along with other actors. I was fortunate enough to be able to effect his voice which got me the role. The cast was very welcoming as was the Director. ​

SWCP: Were you a Star Wars fan before taking part in this series? Do you have a favorite character? 

M.B: I was not a fan but certainly enjoyed the film like everyone else. I got to see the daily's because I was asked to ADR some of the original actors in the film ( ADR is added voice replacement ). Lucas didn't want so many British sounds, which was odd since he chose to film it in England with besides those few American actors, an all British cast.

SWCP:Do you confirm that you were the voice of General Willard in the Star Wars movie: A New Hope?Could you tell us why they chose your voice instead of the original actor?

M.B: ​I voiced several actors in the film along with General Willard ( The young federal troops fighting and dying  etc ) .He wanted me to dub the original actor at the council who questions Darth Vader and gets choked for his trouble. I voiced him but felt his performance was good and told Lucas to keep the original. He took my advice. Of course I had to work so I revoiced Commander Willard for reasons Lucas didn't go into. A few years ago I attended a party for a fellow actor and Mark Hamill and I happened to be talking about the business when I mentioned that I voiced a character on Star Wars the film. He said " no you didn't", I said " Yup, I did", he was adamant that I didn't until I explained. It was a revelation for him. We had worked together on another animated show called Mina and the Count years ago and the subject oddly never came up.

SWCP: You're also live action actor, where we highlight your work in the Television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Next Generation. How it was that experience? 

M.B: ​A great experience. I was cast in Star Trek by Cory Allen the director and approved by Gene Roddenberry who reminded me that I worked for him in the pilot of "And Then Came Bronson" which he produced. I had always wanted to do Star Trek and finally got the chance. Interestingly enough I have never been invited to any Star Trek conventions. Hmmm, I wonder why? At a recent comic convention some of the cast of Star Trek came over to my booth to say hello.

SWCP: In which projects are you currently working on? 

M.B:  I recently voiced a character on the new Voltron series,​​ a remake of a series I starred on in the 80's.​ I am very involved in getting the word out about my daughter actress Ashley Bell's films including her documentary loveandbananas. You can see the trailer on http://loveandbananas.com/ 

SWCP: What message would you like to send for Star Wars fans?

M.B: ​ No particular message other then perhaps they write to the producers of ​ Star War Rebels and ask to see more of General Dodonna.​ That would be very cool.
