Entrevistas SWCP: Brian Herring

Brian Herring tem trabalhado como marionetista há 25 anos em filmes e séries televisivas como por exemplo: Star Wars: TFA,TJJ e Rogue One,Hellboy II,Prometheus,entre outros.

SWCP: Tendo já trabalhado em três filmes de Star Wars,recorda-se de alguma situação fora do normal ou engraçada que tenha decorrido durante as filmagens?

B.H: Houve tantas histórias enquanto fiz cinema.Uma das minhas memórias favoritas é o dia em que o Harrison Ford chegou para trabalhar. 
Estávamos na Millennium Falcon e ele chega á rampa com o seu traje completo com Chewbacca..Enquanto eu estou com o BB-8 no meu maravilhoso macacão verde.O Han Solo olhou-me para cima e para baixo e disse simplesmente assim: "Quem escolheu esse visual?" e foi embora!Agora penso 'Obrigado Indiana Jones!'  Não foi a forma como você imaginaria conhecer o seu herói, mas ele acabou por ser brilhante.  E adorei trabalhar com ele.Ele é tudo o que você quer que seja e muito mais.

SWCP: Foi o principal marionetista do dróide BB-8.Quais foram as maiores dificuldades que sentiu ao manobrar este dróide?

B.H: Correndo pelo deserto em nylon é uma tarefa árdua.Isso foi um grande desafio.E também, como marionetista, costumo ficar para assistir no monitor ao meu desempenho.Não consegui fazer isso muitas vezes em TFA ou TLJ. Felizmente confio no julgamento do Dave Chapman (outro marionetista do BB-8), Neal Scanlan (chefe de departamento do CFX) e claro de ambos os realizadores, JJ Abrams e Rian Johnson.Se eles estão felizes,então eu também estou feliz.

SWCP: Vai participar no próximo filme de Star Wars (IX)?

B.H: Sim... E é  tudo o que posso dizer.

SWCP: Que tarefas desempenhou na cerimónia de abertura dos jogos olímpicos de Londres em 2012?

B.H:  Eu era um dos cerca de 30 marionetistas na cerimónia de abertura.Trabalhei com o fantoche gigante do Voldemort durante a seção Isles of Wonder.Foi um espetáculo incrível e uma das coisas que me orgulho mais em trabalhar.

SWCP: Entre tantas personagens que "deu vida" há alguma por quem nutre um carinho especial?

B.H: O BB-8 é sem dúvida, o personagem mais próximo ao meu coração.Star Wars foi uma parte importante da minha vida desde criança, de modo que ter sido capaz de ser uma parte dela, tem sido um sonho tornado realidade.
Eu também costumava interpretar um coelhinho chamado Billy Nibbles no Animal Magic Show para a BBC.Criei esse personagem e escrevi muitos dos argumentos, então sinto-me também muito orgulhoso do meu tempo naquele programa.

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos fãs de Star Wars?

B.H: Desfrutem de Star Wars á vossa maneira.Peguem no que gostam dele e não deixem ninguém vos dizer que não deviam de gostar de certas coisas. Quer sejam as prequelas, os Ewoks, Gungans,` O último Jedi´ ou qualquer outro aspecto.  Se mexer convosco, em seguida, apreciem-no.  Se isso não acontecer, então há uma dúzia de elementos mais que será para vós.
Star Wars sempre foi sobre o bem contra o mal, e agora mais do que nunca, é importante nos unirmos e apoiar uns aos outros dentro do fandom. 
Star Wars é para todos. Nós não gostamos todos  das mesmas coisas e isso deve ser comemorado e abraçado.Sou um fã desde 1977.Amo incondicionalmente tudo isso? Não.Amo Star Wars como um todo?Podem apostar! Nunca houve um melhor momento para ser um fã de Star Wars.Há muito tempo que pode continuar.

Brian Herring has been working as a puppeteer for 25 years in movies and tv series such as Star Wars: TFA, TJJ and Rogue One, Hellboy II, Prometheus, among others. 
SWCP: Having already worked on three Star Wars movies, do you remember any unusual or funny situation that has elapsed during filming? 

B.H: There were so many stories while making the movies.  One of my favourite memories is the day Harrison Ford first came to work. 
We were on the Millennium Falcon and he arrives up the ramp in his full costume with Chewbacca.  I’m standing with BB-8 in my wonderful green onesie.  Han Solo looked me up and down as simply said “Who picked that look?” and walked away!  I’m now thinking ‘Thanks Indiana Jones!’  Not the way you’d imagine meeting your hero, but he turned out to be just brilliant.  I loved working with him.  Everything you want him to be and more.

SWCP: You were the main puppeteer of droid BB-8. What were the major difficulties that you felt when maneuvering this droid? 

B.H: Running through the desert in nylon is quite a task.  That was a big challenge. Also, as a puppeteer I usually get to watch the performance as I do it on a monitor.  I didn’t get to do that very often on TFA or TLJ.  Luckily I trust the judgement of Dave Chapman (BB-8’s other puppeteer), Neal Scanlan (Head of the CFX Dept) and of course both JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson.  If they’re happy, I’m happy.

SWCP: Will you be a part of the next Star Wars film (IX)? 

B.H: Yes... That’s all you’re getting.

SWCP:  What kind of tasks do you performed in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012? 

B.H: I was one of 30 or so puppeteers in the opening ceremony.  I worked with the giant Voldemort puppet during the Isles of Wonder section.  It was an amazing show and one of the things I’m most proud of working on.

SWCP: Among so many characters that "you gave  life", there are some for whom have a special affection? 

B.H: BB-8 is without doubt the character closest to my heart.  Star Wars has been a major part of my life ever since I was a child, so to be able to be a part of it has been a dream come true.
I also used to perform a little rabbit called Billy Nibbles on The Animal Magic Show for the BBC.  I created that character and wrote many of the scripts, so I’m very proud of my time on that show too.

SWCP: What message would you like to send for Star Wars fans?

B.H: Enjoy Star Wars for yourself.  Take what you love from it and don’t let anyone tell you that you shouldn’t like certain things. Be it the prequels, the Ewoks, Gungans, The Last Jedi or any other aspect.  If it speaks to you then enjoy it.  If it doesn’t, then there are a dozen more elements that will be for you.
Star Wars has always been about good versus evil and now more than ever it’s important to  unite and support each other within the fandom. 
Star Wars is for everyone. We don’t all like the same things and that should be celebrated and embraced.  I’ve been a fan since ‘77.  Do I love all of it unconditionally? No.  Do I love Star Wars as a whole?  You betcha! There has never been a better time to be a Star Wars fan.  Long may it continue.
