Entrevistas SWCP: Clive Mantle

Clive Mantle é um ator,escritor e ator vocal Inglês que participou em vários filmes e séries televisivas como: Robin of Sherwood (1984), Alien 3, Game of Thrones(1ª temporada), Casualty, entre outros.

SWCP: Tem trabalhado em diversas áreas tanto como ator ou até mesmo escritor.Atualmente,em que projetos está a trabalhar? 

C.M:  Atualmente estou a escrever o terceiro livro da minha série ' Freddie Malone Adventure '. Atualmente intitulado "Na cidade do medo e das chamas", continuando o livro premiado ' O tesouro no topo do mundo ' e ' Uma jóia nas areias do tempo '. Então eu misturo escrevendo com atuação e trabalho de voz, e os livros receberam uma recepção muito positiva e entusiástica.Filmei recentemente um episódio de ‘Still open all hours’ com o Sir David Jason,que vai ser exibido perto do Natal este ano no canal BBC1.

SWCP: Em `A Guerra dos Tronos ‘interpretou o papel do Lord Jon Umber (aka the Greatjon). Fale-nos um pouco sobre o seu trabalho nesta série e se quando foi contratado,esperava que esta série televisiva alcançasse tanto êxito?

C.M:  Ninguém sabia o quão popular seria. Você sempre entra num projeto com grandes esperanças e entusiasmo, e só raramente resulta numa brilhante criação. Game of Thrones foi uma dessas sortes, de trabalho árduo, visão, inspiração, esforço e habilidade. Não era necessariamente o trabalho mais confortável para fazer já que as temperaturas em Belfast, onde filmamos rondavam os 22 graus negativos!Estava mais frio lá do que no Everest do qual eu tinha acabado de voltar. Fui contratado por um produtor com quem trabalhei antes num filme sobre o Winston Churchill, e porque também tinham gostado do meu trabalho na série ' Robin de Sherwood '.

SWCP: Na sua carreira como ator e ator vocal,recorda-se de alguma situação engraçada ou incomum que tenha ocorrido consigo durante as filmagens/gravações?

C.M: Quando estávamos a filmar Alien 3, nós realmente capturamos o alien [não o que foi visto no cinema] e tivemos de reagir a vê-lo. Obviamente não havia nenhum alien lá já que ele foi adicionado no computador mais tarde, então nós só tinhamos um pedaço de fita azul preso a uma parede para nos mostrar onde ele estaria,para todos nós olharmos para o lugar certo. Nenhum de nós poderia manter uma expressão correta porque tinhamos de agir como se tivessemos medo de um pedaço de uma"realmente assustadora" fita azul!!!

SWCP: Já trabalhou em filmes de ficção científica como Aliens 3.Gosta desta temática? É fã de Star Wars?

C.M:   Eu só gosto de trabalhar. Não importa o que faça,contanto que seja bom.Só vi o primeiro filme de Star Wars e gostei muito.

SWCP: A sua atual esposa (Carla Mendonça) é de ascendência portuguesa. O que você conhece do nosso país?

C.M: Tenho ido muitas vezes ao vosso país, e  adoro particularmente a área de Lisboa. O pai da Carla viveu perto da Ericeira e Sintra e que é, obviamente, a parte do vosso país maravilhoso que eu conheço melhor. Ele infelizmente morreu há 3 anos, mas nós ainda vamos lá duas a três vezes por ano.Eu realmente adoro vagar por Lisboa e sinto-me muito ligado ao país e á sua gente.

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs?

C.M:  Obrigado por me apoiarem tanto tempo. Estou espantado por ainda estar no ativo, pois é uma profissão muito precária e muitos dos meus amigos e colegas há muito tempo que desistiram.Gostaria de ter começado a escrever quando tinha cerca de 40 anos de idade,e estou muito grato por as pessoas continuarem a ter interesse e apoiarem o meu trabalho. É sempre bom conhecer pessoas e conversar sobre os seus programas favoritos, por isso espero poder conhecer mais fãs portugueses enquanto passeio por Alfama!!!!

Clive Mantle is an actor, writer and vocal actor who has appeared in several films and television series like: Robin of Sherwood (1984), Alien 3, Game of Thrones (season 1), Casualty, among others. 

SWCP: You have worked in several areas both as an actor or even a writer. Currently, in which projects are you working on?

C.M: I am currently writing the third book in my ‘Freddie Malone Adventure’ series. Currently titled ‘In the City of Fear and Flames’, it follows the People’s Book Prize winning ‘The Treasure at the Top of the World’ and ‘A Jewel in the Sands of Time’. So I mix writing with acting and voice over work, and the books have received a very positive and enthusiastic welcome. I have recently filmed an episode of ‘Still open all hours’ with Sir David Jason, to be shown near Christmas here this year on BBC1.

SWCP: In Game of Thrones you played the role of Lord Jon Umber (aka the Greatjon). Tell us a little more about your work in this series and if when you were hired, did you expect this series to achieve so much success?

C.M:  No one knew how popular it would be. You always enter into a project with great high hopes and enthusiasm, and only rarely does it result in a brilliant creation. Game of Thrones was one such lucky amalgam of hard work, vision, inspiration, effort and skill. It was not necessarily the most comfortable job to do as the temperatures in Belfast where we filmed dipped to a very chilly -22 degrees. It was colder there than Everest which I had just returned from. I was hired by a producer I had worked with before on a film about Winston Churchill, and because the showrunners liked ‘Robin of Sherwood’.

SWCP: In your career as an actor and vocal actor, do you remember of any funny or unusual situation that has occurred with you during filming/recording?

C.M:  When we were filming Alien 3, we actually captured the Alien [not seen in the cinema cut] and had to react to seeing it. Obviously there was no Alien there as it was added in by computer later, so we just had a blue piece of tape stuck to a wall to show us where it would be, so we all looked in the right place. None of us could keep a straight face as we all started acting scared at a piece of ‘really frightening’ blue tape!!!

SWCP: You've worked in science-fiction movies like Aliens 3.Do you like this theme? Are you a Star Wars fan?

C.M:  I just like working. It doesn’t matter doing what as long as it’s good. I’ve only ever seen the first ‘Star Wars’ film which I enjoyed very much.

SWCP: Your current wife (Carla Mendonça) is of Portuguese ancestry. What do you know about our country?

C.M:  I have been many times, and I especially love the Lisbon area. Carla’s father lived near Ericeira, near Sintra and that is obviously the part of your wonderful country that I know best. He sadly died 3 years ago, but we visit 2 or 3 times a year still. I really love wandering around Lisbon and feel very attached  to the country and it’s people.

SWCP: What message would you like to send to your fans?

C.M:  Thanks for hanging in there for this long. I am amazed I am still going as it’s a very precarious profession and many of my friends and colleagues have long since given up. I wish I’d started writing when I was about 40, as it is I am very grateful for peoples continued interest and support for my work. It is always great to meet people and chat about their favourite shows, so I hope I can meet some more Portuguese supporters as I’m strolling around the Alfama!!!!
