Paul Hirsch é um editor de filmes Americano com mais de 40  créditos em filmes,que venceu o Óscar de melhor montagem na edição de 1978  juntamente com Marcia Lucas e Richard Chew por Star Wars: Uma Nova Esperança.

SWCP: Foi um dos principais cineastas a sair da Nova Hollywood, às vezes referida como a "American New Wave", quando uma nova geração de jovens cineastas ganhou destaque nos Estados Unidos. Que diferenças notou entre a geração anterior de filmes e a sua?

P.H: A minha primeira resposta é que eles eram velhos. Mas acho que não é isso que você está a procurar.Agora a sério, acho que a minha geração foi a primeira a considerar o cinema como uma forma de arte, e fomos atraídos para a profissão pelo nosso entusiamo sobre o cinema como um meio.  Antes disso, era considerado estritamente comercial na América.  Os cinemas franceses mostraram-me pela primeira vez a alta consideração que os cinéfilos tinham pelas produções de Hollywood.

SWCP: Como surgiu a oportunidade de trabalhar no primeiro filme de Star Wars?

P.H: É uma longa história que descrevo em detalhes no meu mais recente livro, A Long Time Ago in a Cutting Room Far, Far Away. Basicamente, conheci o George Lucas através do meu trabalho com o Brian De Palma.

SWCP: Esperava que este filme se tornasse num enorme sucesso?E ainda por cima,ter ganho um Óscar da Academia?Qual foi a sua reação nessa altura?

P.H: Ganhei um Oscar, junto com meus co-editores Marcia Lucas e Richard Chew.Foi avassalador.Ganhei antes mesmo de desenvolver uma esperança de ganhar um!

SWCP: Em 1980,trabalhou em Star Wars: O Império Contra-Ataca, dirigido pelo falecido Irvin Kershner.Que tal foi ter trabalhado com ele?

P.H: Também falo sobre ele mais detalhadamente no meu livro.O Kersh era muito habilidoso e perpetuamente entusiasmado, quase como um adolescente que nunca cresceu.

SWCP: Está atualmente a trabalhar em algum projeto?

P.H: Não, eu gostaria de trabalhar um pouco mais, mas agora, quem sabe o que vai acontecer?

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs?

P.H: Tentem manter a esperança para o futuro e façam o que for necessário para se manterem saudáveis até que esta terrível epidemia passe.

Paul Hirsch is an American motion picture editor with over 40 film credits. In 1978, he, along with Richard Chew and Marcia Lucas, won the Academy Award for Film Editing for his work on Star Wars: A New Hope. 

SWCP:  You were one of the premier filmmakers to come out of the New Hollywood, sometimes referred to as the "American New Wave", when a new generation of young filmmakers came to prominence in the United States. What differences did you notice between the previous film generation and yours?

P.H: My first response is that they were older. but I guess that's not what you are looking for.  Seriously, I think my generation was the first to regard film as an art form, and we were drawn to the profession by our excitement about cinema as a medium.  Before that, it was considered as strictly commercial in America.  French cinemas showed me for the first time the high regard that cinephiles there had for Hollywood product.

SWCP:  How did you get the opportunity to work on the first Star Wars movie?
P.H:  It's a rather long story that I describe in detail in my recent book, A Long Time Ago in a Cutting Room Far, Far Away. Basically, I met George Lucas through my work with Brian De Palma.

SWCP: Did you expect this film to become a huge success? And on top of that, did you win an Academy Award? What was your reaction at the time?
P.H:  I did win an Academy Award, along with my co-editors Marcia Lucas and Richard Chew.  It was overwhelming.  I won before I had even developed a hope of winning one.


SWCP: In 1980, you worked in Star Wars:The Empire Strikes Back,directed by the late Irvin Kershner.How it was, working with him?

P.H: I go into this in detail in the book as well. Kersh was very skilled and perpetually enthusiastic, almost like an adolescent who never really grew up.

SWCP: Are you currently working on a project?
P.H: No. I would like to work some more, but now, who knows what will happen?

SWCP: What message would you like to send to your fans?
P.H: Try to maintain hope for the future and do what is necessary to stay healthy until this awful epidemic passes.
