Entrevistas SWCP: Matthew MacCallum

 

Matthew MacCallum é um ator, escritor, comediante e cineasta que participou em vários filmes e programas de televisão como Nightmare Alley, Resident Evil: Raccoon City, Resident Evil: Retribution, Paranormal 911, Murdoch Mysteries, The Shape of Water, entre outros.

 

SWCP: Em Resident Evil: Raccoon City,você desempenhou os papéis de um Labcoat Zombie / Dining Hall Chernobyl Zombie.Sente-se confortável em próteses pesadas a fazer esses papéis? Quais são as maiores dificuldades que surgem? 

M.M: Como ator, gosto muito dos papéis com próteses pesadas. É incrivelmente libertador como artista, e para ser honesto, torna as coisas muito mais fáceis porque eu posso permitir que a maquilhagem faça grande parte do trabalho. Eu não tenho certeza de como os meus colegas artistas de criaturas se sentem sobre isso, mas uma vez que eu tenho a maquilhagem completa, geralmente posso tomar algum tempo em frente a um espelho apenas movendo o meu rosto e ver como as peças se movem com a minha expressão. Posso exagerar certas expressões ou até mesmo basear os meus movimentos de comoa iluminação bate na maquilhagem e usar isso para dar ao diretor o que eles estão a procurar.

As únicas dificuldades reais que tenho é que costumo perder peso (eu sou magro para começar, então não tenho muito a perder) apenas através da suação. Na verdade, como o zombie lab coat (também conhecido como Turning no jogo) quando terminei aquela cena parecia que a prótese estava se afastando do lado do meu rosto perto do meu olho. Então, fazendo esses tipos de papéis por tanto tempo eu só pensei "Ok, vou apenas empurrar isso para baixo e corrigi-lo" nada grande que eu tinha feito antes noutros filmes. Assim que pressionei a área, um grande respingo de suor foi direto ao meu olho. Por sorte, já estava a terminar o dia de filmagens.Lol!(Risos). 

SWCP: Você trabalhou com cineastas e diretores incríveis como Guillermo del Toro, Johannes Roberts e Megan Follows. Lembra-se de alguma situação engraçada ou incomum que tenha ocorrido com algum deles durante as filmagens?

M.M: Trabalhar com o Guillermo foi mágico. Ainda parece um sonho. Passei um mês no set com muitos dos meus heróis, e fiz tantos novos amigos. É um momento para mim que sinto que posso terminar a minha carreira amanhã e me sentirei tão realizado. Tenha um cineasta, um verdadeiro artista e visionário, como ele que olhe para si e diga: "Você fez um trabalho fantástico hoje!" Sinto que posso morrer feliz.

Com o Johannes em Resident Evil, acho que o meu momento favorito foi durante a primeira tomada quando Robbie e Chad me descobrem e eu faço a curva icónica, então depois de tirar algumas fotos eu apresso-os. Johannes gritou: "Corta!" e logo depois ele disse "Bem, isso foi aterrorizante!" Todos riram de acordo e acho que fizemos duas tomadas depois disso e eu terminei por hoje. Então, em maio, ele me trouxe de volta para as refilmagens, e nós realmente tivemos de sair e conversar. Ele e eu compartilhamos um grande amor por John Carpenter, e durante essa conversa, também percebemos que os nossos aniversários estão com dois dias de diferença. 

Como Canadiano a trabalhar com a Megan Follows foi muito fixe. Foi para um programa de televisão que é realmente popular aqui:Murdoch Mysteries e que é produzido pela CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation).A Megan é importante para muitos de nós aqui no Canadá porque ela interpretou Anne em Anne of Green Gables durante toda a série dos anos 80, ela é iconica e tão talentosa. Mas como eu só estava lá por um episódio,não fazia ideia de quem estava dirigindo. Como a maioria dos diretores de TV episódicos entram e saem, então qualquer um poderia ter dirigido o meu episódio.

Acabei de chegar no set para fazer o meu trabalho. Entrei no guarda-roupa e estava esperando para ser chamado para a minha cena. Interpretei um mordomo, e este show acontece no início dos anos 1900, então o nosso guarda-roupa era preciso. Não faço ideia de como as pessoas sobreviveram aos verões com essas roupas. Enfim, eu era fumador na época, então estava a ficar fora do caminho e fumando, e ouvi alguém atrás de mim dizer: "Oh meu Deus. Você está ótimo! Eu imediatamente pensei, "Eu conheço essa voz."Viro-me para ver quem está a falar comigo e a porra da Anne de Green Gables estava lá! Sei que pensei "merda", mas não posso garantir que não disse em voz alta. Se eu tivesse, ela não mostrava. Ela era engraçada, acessível, e realmente se importava com os seus atores. Não só no desempenho, mas queria conhecer-nos como pessoas Ela é uma delícia.

 

SWCP: Na sua página do Facebook, vimos algumas referências a Star Wars. É fã desses filmes? Tem algum personagem favorito?

M.M: Uh-oh! Se você pensou que as minhas últimas respostas foram longas, bem,então aperte o cinto porque tal como imensa gente eu AMO STAR WARS! Os filmes, a b.d, os romances, as séries de TV, esse universo inteiro me moldou mais do que posso descrever.O meu primeiro desejo de trabalhar em filmes é por causa desse universo. Poderia falar sobre isso para sempre! Tenho duas tatuagens de Star Wars. Na minha panturrilha esquerda,tenho uma foto realista do retrato de Han Solo de Uma Nova Esperança; no interior do meu bíceps esquerdo,tenho um Lego Chewbacca puxando os braços de um Stormtrooper. Quero dizer, eu estou na casa dos 40 anos e chorei durante o último episódio de The Mandalorian. Quanto aos personagens, acho que seria uma resposta mais curta se eu falasse sobre os que odeio, porque não há muitos.

Havia um personagem com quem me surpreendi e me identifiquei que era o Anakin. Quando eu tinha 16 anos, a minha mãe foi diagnosticada com cancro da mama, e lutou contra isso até que morreu quando eu tinha 21 anos. Grande parte da minha vida adulta e adolescente foi vê-la a lutar contra essa coisa só para que ela voltasse mais forte até que finalmente tirou a sua vida. Anos depois, quando eu estava no teatro durante O Ataque dos Clones e Anakin volta para resgatar a sua mãe dos Salteadores Tusken e a encontra morta. Eu conhecia aquela raiva. Eu senti essa raiva, e nessa idade facilmente teria feito a mesma coisa. Então no Episódio Três, quando Palapatine diz a Anakin que ele conhece um poder de força que proibirá as pessoas que você ama de morrer. Eu estava certo com o Anakin, eu teria aceitado essa oferta num segundo. O universo que George Lucas criou foi e é tão especial, e estou curtindo todas as novas histórias que saem de todos esses grandes escritores e diretores. Agora, se posso ser eu mesmo uma pequena parte desse universo é um objetivo que eu tive praticamente toda a minha vida.

 

SWCP: Achamos algumas parecenças físicas suas com as do ator Doug Jones e até ambos interpretam papéis de criaturas. O que acha sobre este facto?

M.M: Uau, obrigado! Isso é um elogio incrível, e tem sido uma piada dos meus amigos que são

maquilhadores. Eles têm me dito por anos "Nós vamos fazer de ti o próximo Doug Jones." A melhor parte é que o Dougie é um amigo. Conversamos através do mensager há alguns anos. Ele não tem sido nada além de doce e solidário. Se eu pudesse ser metade do humano que ele é, ficaria tão feliz. A parte triste é que ainda não nos encontramos pessoalmente. Toda vez que tentamos nos reunir, ou os nossos horários mudam e um de nós tem que trabalhar, ou o estúpido do Covid desliga tudo. Ele está em Toronto a trabalhar nas séries, então isso vai acontecer eventualmente. Continuamos a dizer que daremos um grande abraço quando finalmente nos vermos pessoalmente.

SWCP: Em que projetos está atualmente a trabalhar?

M.M: As coisas começaram a voltar até á produção de televisão e cinema esta semana. O escritório do meu agente esteve fechado até sete de janeiro, e acordei esta manhã (é o dia oito, quando digito isso) e fiz um teste. Então passei a maior parte do dia a preparar-me e gravando para esse papel e agora vou esperar para ver. Se você conhece alguém que precisa de um monstro para um filme ou um programa de TV,eu estou disponível. 

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs? 

M.M: Ainda estou um pouco surpreso por ter fãs. Eu sou um fã, tenho a certeza que você pode dizer isso do meu discurso de Star Wars. Na verdade, eu pedi para interpretar o Zumbi do Lab Coat quando fui contatado para trabalhar em Resident Evil, porque eu sou um grande fã desses jogos. Mas para todos vocês que gostam do que eu fiz naquele filme ou em qualquer outro programa em que trabalhei muito obrigado. Isso realmente significa o mundo para mim. O mais importante é que vocês tenham um sonho, qualquer sonho, sigam-no. As pessoas vão te chamar de louco, rir de você, e até zombar de você por esse sonho. Não dêem ouvidos. Estou dizendo que pode e acontece. Sou a pessoa menos provável de chegar aqui.

SWCP: In Resident Evil: Raccoon City,you played the roles of a Labcoat Zombie / Dining Hall Chernobyl Zombie.Do you feel comfortable in heavy prosthetic and make up roles? What are the greatest difficulties that arise?

M.M: As an actor I do really enjoy the heavy prosthetics roles. It’s incredibly freeing as a performer, and to be honest it makes things a lot easier because I can allow the make up to do much of the work. I’m not sure how my fellow creature performers feel about it, but once I have the full make up on I usually take some time in front of a mirror to just move my face and see how the pieces move with my expression. I can exaggerate certain expressions or even base my movements on how the lighting hits the make up and use that to give the director what they are looking for. 

The only real difficulties I have is I tend to lose weight (I’m thin to begin with so I don’t have that much to lose) just through sweating. In fact as the Lab Coat zombie (aka Turning around zombie in the game) when I finished that scene it felt as if the prosthetic was pulling away from the side of my face just near my eye. So from doing these types of roles for so long I just thought “ok I’ll just push this down and fix it” nothing big I had done it before in other films. As soon as I pressed on the area, a giant splash of sweat went right in my eye. Luckily I was done for the day lol.

 

SWCP: You worked with incredible filmmakers and directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Johannes Roberts and Megan Follows. Do you remember any funny or unusual situations that occurred to any of them during filming? 

M.M: Working with Guillermo was magical. It still feels like a dream. I spent a month on set with many of my heroes, and made so many new friends. It’s a moment for me that I feel I can end my career tomorrow and I will feel so accomplished. Have a filmmaker, a true artist and visionary, like him look at you and say “you did a fantastic job today!” I feel I can die happy.

With Johannes on RE I think my favourite moment was during the first take when Robbie and Chad discover me and I do the iconic turn, then after taking a couple of shots I rush them. Johannes yelled, “cut!” and immediately after he said “well that was fucking terrifying!” Everyone laughed in agreement and I think we did two takes after that and I was done for the day. Then in May he brought me back for reshoots, and we really got to hang out and chat. He and I share a big love of John Carpenter, and during that conversation we also realized our birthdays are two days apart. 

As a Canadian working with Megan Follows was really cool. It was for a television show that is really popular here Murdoch Mysteries which is produced by the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation). Megan is a big deal for a lot of us here in Canada because she played Anne in Anne of Green Gables for the entire run of that show in the 80s, she’s iconic and so very talented. But because I was only there for one episode I had no clue who was directing. Like most episodic TV directors come in and out, so anyone could have directed my episode, I just arrived on set to do my job. I got into wardrobe and was just hanging around waiting to be called for my scene. I played a butler, and this show takes place in the early 1900s so our wardrobe is period accurate. I have no idea how people survived the summers in those clothes. Anyway, I was a smoker at the time so I was staying out of the way and having a cigarette, and I hear someone behind me say “Oh my God. You look great!” I immediately think, “I know that voice.” and I turn around to see who’s speaking to me and fucking Anne of Green Gables is standing there! I know I thought “holy shit,” but I can’t guarantee that I did not say it out loud. If I did she didn’t show it. She was funny, approachable, and really cared about her actors. Not just in performance but wanted to get to know you as a person. She’s an absolute delight.

 

SWCP: On your Facebook page, we saw some references to Star Wars. Are you a fan of these movies?Do you have any favorite characters? 

M.M: Uh-oh if you thought my last answers were long, well buckle up because like a lot of people I LOVE STAR WARS! The movies, the comics, the novels, the TV series, that entire universe has shaped me more than I can describe. My first desire to work in movies is because of that universe. I could talk about it forever! I have two Star Wars tattoos. On my left calf I have a photo realistic portrait of Han Solo from A New Hope; on the inside of my left bicep I have a Lego Chewbacca pulling the arms off a Stormtrooper. I mean I’m in my 40s and I cried during the last episode of The Mandalorian. As far as characters, I think it’d be a shorter answer if I told you the ones I hate because there are not many. There was one character I was surprised I truly identified with and that was Anakin. When I was 16 my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and battled that until she passed when I was 21. Much of my teen and young adult life was watching her fight this thing only for it to come back stronger until it finally took her life. So years later when I was in the theatre during Attack of The Clones and Anakin returns to rescue his mother from the Tusken Raiders and finds her dead. I knew that anger. I’ve felt that anger, and at that age I easily would’ve done the same thing. Then in Episode Three when Palapatine tells Anakin that he knows a force power that will prohibit the people you love from dying. I was right with Anakin, I would’ve taken that offer in a second. The universe George Lucas created was and is so special, and I’m enjoying all the new stories coming out from all these great writers and directors. Now if I can be even a small part of that universe is a goal I’ve had pretty much my whole life.

 

SWCP: We found some physical similarities of yours with those of actor Doug Jones and even both play roles of creatures. What do you think about this?

M.M: Wow, thank you. That is an incredible compliment, and has been a running joke from my friends who are make-up fx artists. They've been telling me for years “we’re going to make you the next Doug Jones.” The best part is Dougie is a friend. We’ve been chatting through messenger for a couple of years now. He’s been nothing but sweet and supportive. If I could be half the human he is I would be so happy. The sad part is we have yet to meet in person. Every time we’ve tried to get together either our schedules change or one of us have to work, or stupid Covid shuts everything down. He’s in Toronto quite a bit for the shows he is shooting so it will happen eventually. We keep joking we’ll have a big lanky hug when we finally see each other in real life. 

SWCP: What projects are you currently working on?

M.M: Things have just started back up as far as television and film production this week. My agent’s office was closed until January 7th, and I woke up this morning (it’s the 8th as I type this) and I had an audition. So I spent most of the day preparing and self taping for that role and now I’ll wait and see. If you know anyone who needs a monster for a movie or a TV show I am available.

SWCP: What message would you like to send to your fans? 

M.M: I’m still a little surprised I have fans. I am a fan, I’m sure you can tell that from my Star Wars rant. In fact, I asked to play the Lab Coat zombie when I was contacted to work on Resident Evil, because I’m such a fan of those games. But to all of you who enjoy what I did on that film or any other show I’ve worked on, thank you so much. It really does mean the world to me. Most importantly if you have a dream, any dream, follow it. People are going to call you crazy, laugh at you, and even mock you for that dream. Don’t listen. I’m telling you it can and does happen. I’m the least likely person to get here.
