Tom Wilton é um ator especializado em movimento, captura de movimento e marionetes de criaturas. Ele passou os últimos seis anos como um dos principais artistas de criaturas em Star Wars, ajudando a dar vida a uma menagerie de estranhos e maravilhosos monstros e alienígenas. Em Star Wars: Episódio IX - A Ascensão de Skywalker,Wilton interpretou o papel do Coronel Aftab Ackbar.

SWCP: Fale-nos um pouco acerca do seu trabalho em Star Wars. 

T.W: Eu sou um dos principais artistas da equipa de criaturas de Londres e tive muita sorte de estar envolvido em todos os cinco filmes de Star Wars que foram filmados aqui em Londres.Os meus personagens mais notáveis são o Ponda Baba de Rogue One e o

Aftab Ackbar de A Ascensão Skywalker.

SWCP: Recorda-se de alguma situação engraçada ou invulgar que tenha ocorrido durante as rodagens? 

T.W: Trabalhar para a fantástica equipa cfx está cheio de situações inusitadas! Cada criatura é sob medida e vem com o seu próprio conjunto de desafios. Um dia eu poderia estar usando uma plataforma animatrónica, no dia seguinte andando num dróide em extensões de pernas ou passando por uma complicada aplicação de maquilhagem protética. Os dias são longos e o trabalho pode ser muito difícil, mas quando você está cercado por pessoas que você respeita e ama, profissionais de topo, que ao longo de cinco filmes você se orgulha de chamar de amigos, todos vocês se unem para fazer o trabalho. Também rimos muito. Um senso de humor é essencial na minha linha de trabalho.

SWCP: Já era fã de Star Wars antes de trabalhar nesta frânquia? 

T.W: Sou um grande fã desde pequeno. Uma das coisas mais emocionantes sobre estar envolvido nos novos filmes é ver toda uma nova geração de crianças se apaixonarem por Star Wars.

SWCP: Você também tem uma boa relação de trabalho com a ILM e foi o principal performer de captura de movimento em Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.Como foi essa experiência? 

T.W: A equipe de produção virtual da ILM era tão divertida para trabalhar e um grupo realmente talentoso de indivíduos. Essa mesma equipa é responsável pela revolucionária nova tecnologia StageCraft que está sendo amplamente usada em toda a indústria cinematográfica em filmes como The Batman e The Midnight Sky.

SWCP: Em que projetos está actualmente a trabalhar?

T.W: Quando não estou a trabalhar para a equipa cfx de StarWars, trabalho extensivamente com marionetes VFX fornecendo desempenho de referência para criaturas CGI. Filmes recentes incluem Animais Fantásticos: Os Segredos de Dumbledore, Jurassic World: Dominion e o filme de terror finlandês independente,The Hatching dirigido por Hanna Bergholm.

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos fãs de Star Wars? 

T.W: Vocês são incríveis! Os fãs de Star Wars são os melhores do mundo e a galáxia muito distante não seria a mesma sem vocês. Que a força esteja convosco!

Tom Wilton is an actor who specialises in movement, motion capture and creature puppetry. He has spent the last six years as one of the core creature performers on Star Wars, helping to bring to life a menagerie of weird and wonderful monsters and aliens.

SWCP: Tell us a little bit about your work in Star Wars. 

T.W: I’m one of the core London creature team performers and was very fortunate to be involved in all five of the new Star Wars films that were shot here in London. My most notable characters are Ponda Baba from Rogue One and Aftab Ackbar from The Rise Of Skywalker.

SWCP: Do you remember any funny or unusual situations that occurred during the shooting? 

T.W: Working for the fantastic CFX team is filled with unusual situations! Every creature is bespoke and comes with its own set of challenges. One day I might be wearing an animatronic rig, the next day walking around in a droid on leg extensions or undergoing a complicated prosthetic makeup application. The days are long and the work can be very tough but when you are surrounded by people you respect and love, professionals at the top of their game, who over the course of five films you are proud to call friends, you all pull together to get the job done. We also laugh a lot. A sense of humour is essential in my line of work. 

SWCP: Were you a Star Wars fan before you worked on this franchise?

T.W: I’ve been a huge fan since I was a little boy. One of the most exciting things about being involved in the new films is seeing a whole new generation of kids fall in love with Star Wars. 

SWCP: You also have a good working relationship with ILM and you were the primary motion capture performer on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.How was that experience?

T.W: The virtual production team at ILM were so much fun to work with and a really talented group of individuals. That same team are responsible for the revolutionary new StageCraft technology that we’re seeing being used widely across the film industry in such films as The Batman and The Midnight Sky.

SWCP: What projects are you currently working on? 

T.W: When I’m not working for the CFX team at StarWars I work extensively as a VFX puppeteer providing reference performance for CGI creatures. Recent films include Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Jurassic World: Dominion and the independent Finnish horror feature The Hatching directed by Hanna Bergholm.

SWCP: What message would you like to send to Star Wars fans? 

T..W: You guys are amazing! Star Wars fans are the best in the world and the galaxy far far away just wouldn’t be the same without you. May the force be with you!
