SWCP: A sua estreia no cinema foi na longa-metragem de comédia, Black Knight, de 2001, estrelada por Martin Lawrence. Que memórias guarda da sua participação nesse filme? 

A.D: Oh meu caro,foi há tanto tempo... foi o meu primeiro papel no SAG, então lembro-me de ter aprendido muito sobre estar num set. (O SAG é o nosso sindicato, o Screen Actors Guild.)  Uma coisa que aprendi foi o quanto há espera quando você tem um papel minúsculo e cada cena em que você está envolve dezenas de pessoas!  (E também quando o ator principal não tem interesse em aparecer antes das 11:00, mesmo que todos os outros estejam lá desde as 6:00 ou 7:00 da manhã.)  Foi onde aprendi quais são os vários papéis-chave como o 1º AD, 2º AD e DP.  Foi onde aprendi a defender-me quando o chefe do departamento de cabeleireiro queria que eu parecesse de um jeito que eu odiava totalmente, e eu me mantive firme até conseguir o meu caminho sem ser desrespeitosa ou perder a paciência. E foi a minha primeira vez voando em primeira classe quando eles me reservaram um voo para  Nova York!

 SWCP: É também atriz vocal em videojogos. Há algum personagem desta área que gostaria de interpretar? 

A.D: Ooh,adoro fazer dialetos e sotaques, e sou boa em muitos deles, então seria divertido fazer vários diferentes - ou mesmo apenas um.  Eu também adoraria fazer um personagem que envelhece de muito jovem a muito velho.  E com uma vida emocional dinâmica.  Possivelmente todos os três aspectos em um - eu amo um desafio.

SWCP: Você trabalhou na série de televisão Fallout como Cassandra Hawthorne.É fã de ficção científica? 

A.D: 100%, sim. O filme original de "Star Wars" (Episódio IV) foi exatamente o que me inspirou a estar nos filmes. Passei horas desenhando fotos da Princesa Leia com roupas e cabelos diferentes, ou sonhando com histórias alternativas - fan fiction inicial). Já reassisti "Arquivo X" e "Buffy, a Caça-Vampiros","Firefly/Serenity"  e "Stranger Things" muitas vezes, os filmes modernos de "Star Trek"... Adorei ler Ray Bradbury e Isaac Asimov, e estou a ler mais recentemente, Ursula K. LeGuin. Vai além do amor - parece uma parte essencial de mim.  A ficção científica e a fantasia,a banda desenhada, etc., dão mais espaço à imaginação, e devolvem-nos às mentes que tínhamos quando crianças... Acredito que a mente é uma parte essencial da humanidade que tornaria o mundo real num lugar melhor se mais pessoas voltassem para lá com mais frequência.

SWCP: É voluntária do 52nd Street Project, uma organização sem fins lucrativos no bairro de Hell's Kitchen, em Manhattan. Pode falar um pouco sobre a sua função nessa organização? 

A.D: Fico satisfeita que você tenha feito esta pergunta.O 52nd Street Project oferece atividades extracurriculares para as crianças no bairro de Hell's Kitchen em Manhattan, um bairro da cidade de Nova York, que é economicamente desfavorecido (embora nos últimos anos a centrificação tenha se mudado, então agora é uma combinação estranha de ambos). A maioria das atividades gira em torno do Teatro, e eles oferecem aulas de Dramaturgia para crianças a partir dos nove anos. Depois de as crianças escreverem as suas peças, o Projeto pede a atores e diretores profissionais adultos para dirigir e atuar nelas para algumas apresentações públicas.  É um lugar verdadeiramente maravilhoso que capacita as crianças a encontrar e expressar as suas vozes autênticas e se sentirem seguras fazendo isso, e eu fiquei orgulhosa de ter sido convidada a ser voluntária com elas muitas vezes nos últimos vinte anos.

SWCP: Em que projetos está atualmente a trabalhar? 

A.D: Recentemente, gravei outro episódio de "Law and Order" no papel da juíza Hines, o que já fiz algumas vezes, e recorri a um podcast infantil "Tinkercast: Who, What When", e estamos prestes a gravar outro episódio.  Algumas semanas atrás, tive uma primeira carreira: fui convidada para assumir o papel principal de uma peça quando eles perderam a atriz principal para uma emergência familiar, e eu tive apenas dois dias de ensaio antes das apresentações públicas começarem. Foi um passeio e tanto! Também me ofereceram a oportunidade de fazer um cabaré num local de prestígio de Nova York.

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs? 

A.D:  Primeiro eu diria, Muito obrigado, SWCP!Estou grata pelo vosso interesse, e feliz pela vossa existência. E também diria o seguinte: acho que as coisas mais bonitas da ficção científica são tanto o porto seguro que ela oferece a pessoas que podem ter tido uma realidade muito difícil crescendo e, ao mesmo tempo,a sua capacidade, através da metáfora, de encontrar um novo significado, clareza e coragem para a nossa realidade agora. Lembrem-se de que são amados, e se não estiverem a sentir isso agora, que a melhor maneira de receber amor e bondade seja doando-o - começando, mas não terminando, consigo mesmo.

SWCP:  Your cinema debut was in the 2001 comedy feature film Black Knight starring Martin Lawrence. What memories do you have of your participation in that film? 

A.D: Oh boy, so long ago... it was my first SAG role, so I remember learning a lot about being on a set. (SAG is our union, the Screen Actors Guild.)  One thing I learned was just how much waiting there is when you have a tiny role and each scene you're in involves dozens of people!  (And also when the lead actor has no interest in showing up earlier than 11:00am, even though everyone else has been there since 6:00 or 7:00am 😒.)  It's where I learned what various key roles like the 1st AD, 2nd AD, and DP are.  It's where I learned to stand up for myself when the head of the hair department wanted me to look a way that I utterly hated, and I held my ground until I got my way without being disrespectful or losing my temper. And it was my first time flying first class when they flew me down from New York! 

SWCP: You are also a vocal actress in video games. Are there any characters in this area that you would like to play?

A.D: Ooh, I love doing dialects and accents, and am good at a lot of them, so it would be fun to do several different ones - or even just one.  I'd also love to do a character that ages from very young to very old.  And one with a dynamic emotional life.  Possibly all 3 aspects in one - I love a challenge.

SWCP:  You worked in Fallout television series as Cassandra Hawthorne. Are you a science-fiction fan? 

A.D: 100%, yes.The original "Star Wars" movie (Episode IV) was exactly what inspired me to be IN the movies.I spent hours drawing pictures of Princess Leia with different outfits and hair, or dreaming up alternative story lines - early fan fiction :-).  I've rewatched "The X-Files" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Firefly/Serenity", and "Stranger Things" many times, the modern "Star Trek" movies.... I loved reading Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov, and am getting into Ursula K. LeGuin.  It goes beyond love - it feels like an essential part of me.  Science fiction and fantasy, comics, etc., give the most room to the imagination, and return us to the minds we had as children... I believe that mind is an essential part of humanity that would make the real world a better place if more people returned there more often. 

SWCP:  You're a volunteer with the 52nd Street Project, a non-profit organization in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan. Can you tell us a little bit about your role in that organization?

A.D: I love that you asked about that.  The 52nd Street Project provides after-school activities for the kids in the Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood in Manhattan, a borough of New York City, which is primarily economically underprivileged (though in the last few years gentrification has moved in, so it's now a weird combination of both.)  Most of the activities center around Theatre, and they offer Playmaking (their name for playwriting) classes to kids as young as 9.  After the kids write their plays, the Project asks adult professional actors and directors to direct and act in them for a few public performances.  It's a truly wonderful place that empowers children to find and express their authentic voices and feel safe doing it, and I've been proud to have been asked to volunteer with them many times over the past 20 years. 

SWCP: What projects are you currently working on? 

A.D: I recently shot another episode of "Law and Order" as Judge Hines, which I've done a few times now, and I recur on a children's podcast "Tinkercast: Who, What When", and we're about to record another episode.  A few weeks ago I had a career first:  I was asked to step into the lead role of a play when they lost their lead actress to a family emergency, and I had only two days of rehearsal before public performances began. It was quite a ride!  I've also been offered an opportunity to do a cabaret at a prestigious New York venue, and I'm working on putting that together.  

SWCP: What message would you like to send to your fans? 

A.D : First I would say, Muito obrigado, SWCP!  I'm grateful for your interest, and happy you exist. I would also say this:  I think the most beautiful things about science fiction are both the safe haven it provides to people who may have had a very tough reality growing up, and at the same time, its ability, through metaphor, to find new meaning, clarity, and courage for our reality now.  Remember that you are loved, and if you're not feeling that you are right now, that the best way to receive love and kindness is by giving it - beginning, but not ending, with yourself.
