Entrevistas SWCP: Jason Brooks

 

Jason Brooks é um ator, diretor e artista especial FX americano. Trabalhando no cinema independente desde 2003,a sua carreira ascendeu em 2017, quando foi escalado para interpretar Jason Voorhees no filme indie favorito dos fãs, Friday the 13th Vengeance. Ele também é o co-fundador da FX da Real Fiction Studios.

 

SWCP: Fale-nos um pouco sobre o seu trabalho NOS FILMES DE Sexta Feira 13.

J.B: Interpretei o Jason Voorhees em três longas-metragens, Sexta-Feira 13 Vingança, Vingança 2 Bloodlines e Sexta-Feira 13 Roseblood, e interpretei o personagem em duas curtas-metragens, Nightmare on Elm Street: Up all Night e Mythos.A minha jornada começou em Mythos, quando fiz o teste para o papel em 2017. O diretor e os produtores ficaram impressionados com o meu desempenho e contrataram-me para interpretar o icónico personagem. Logo após as filmagens, foi decidido que os fãs queriam uma versão mais longa da história e Vingança nasceu. Escalamos o C.J. Graham (Jason Voorhees Sexta-Feira 13 parte 6 Jason Lives) como o pai de Jason,Elias Voorhees, Steve Dash (Jason Voorhees Sexta-Feira 13 Parte 2) como o xerife Jason Realotti, e Tommy McLoughlin como Walt the Grave Keeper (escritor e diretor de Sexta-Feira 13 parte 6 Jason Lives) e também o compositor Harry Manfredi.O filme foi uma sequência direta da parte 6 seguindo as filhas de Tommy Jarvis que vão à procura do seu pai perdido em Camp Crystal Lake. 

 Depois do sucesso deste filme, os fãs queriam mais, então o diretor voltou a contratar-me para continuar a história e assim Vengeance 2 Bloodlines começou. Um dos nossos produtores, Peter Anthony também tinha uma história para contar e começou a filmar Friday the 13th Rosebloood, uma sequência direta do seu favorito Friday the 13th Film Part 7 New Blood. Peter pediu-me para reprisar o meu papel como o infame slasherno seu filme preenchendo os sapatos de Kane Hodder desta vez. Roseblood acompanhou a história de Tina a partir da parte 7 e viu o retorno do elenco original, Lar Park Lincoln (Tina), Terry Kiser (Dr. Crews) e Kevin Spirtas (Nick). 

Assim que as filmagens foram concluídas, a produção de Vengeance 2 Bloodlines começou. Vingança 2 trouxe de volta C.J. Graham como Elias, Tommy McLoughlin como Walt mas incluiu mais ex-alunos da franquia Darcy Demoss, (Nikki Parte 6 Jason Lives), Thom Mathews, (Tommy Jarvis Parte 6 Jason Lives), bem como outras lendas do terror bem conhecidas, Tamara Glynn, (Sam Halloween 5) Rob Mello, (Babyface Killer em Happy Death Day 1&2) Paul Taylor (Pinhead Hellraiser Judgment),  Diana Prince (Darcy, a Garota do Correio, Joe Bob Briggs, Last Drive in) e Richie Ramone, dos Ramones. O filme continuou a história da busca das meninas pelo seu pai com um final épico que colocou C.J. Graham de volta ao seu traje original do Jason da parte 6  para enfrentar Thom Mathews como Tommy Jarvis. Após a conclusão, o filme correu o circuito internacional de festivais de cinema ganhando 64 prémios.

 

 

SWCP: Você sofreu vários ferimentos durante as filmagens de Rose Blood: A Friday the 13th. O que realmente aconteceu?

J.B: No final da cena de luta com a equipa da FAAST, quando cortei Sanchez com a serra de cortar relva, o sangue que foi pulverizado em mim continha pequenos pedaços de metal que entraram no meu olho. O médico no set removeu oito pequenos flocos de metal do meu olho direito. Mais tarde naquele dia, tive que colocar um contato total de esclera naquele olho e realizar uma manobra onde eu caía através de uma parede de uma plataforma elevada.

A cena em que o militar está a bater-me com a maleta de metal originou outra lesão. Depois de várias tomadas bem-sucedidas da luta coreografada, a alça da pasta quebrou no meio do balanço e torceu fazendo com que a borda da pasta atingisse o meu antebraço quebrando o osso. Continuei a filmar as seis horas restantes do dia para terminar a cena. Naquela mesma noite em que peguei o facão do corpo do coronel Chase pela lâmina, ele ficou preso e não se moveu.A minha mão deslizou ao longo da lâmina cortando as luvas grossas de silicone e a minha mão.

 

SWCP: Fez uma parceria com as maquilhadoras e artistas FX Naomi Mechem-Miller e Michelle Munoz para criar a equipa FX da Real Fiction Studios. Pode falar um pouco mais sobre esse empreendimento? 

J.B: Eu dirigi a Real Fiction Studios como uma empresa de design gráfico e arte freelance desde 1999. Quando comecei a produzir filmes, naturalmente continuei usando o nome. Conheci a maquilhadora e artista FX Naomi Mechem-Miller no set de Friday the 13th Vengeance 21 Bloodlines enquanto criava o especial FX em pré-produção. Depois de passar um tempo considerável juntos no set e depois trabalhar em projetos futuros juntos construindo efeitos cada vez mais divertidos, tive uma ideia. E se eu transformar a Real Fiction Studios numa empresa especial de FX e construí-la com outros maquilhadores e criativos locais? Naomi estava a bordo e rapidamente trouxemos Michelle Munoz, outra talentosa maquilhadora e artista do FX que liderou o departamento em Vengeance 2 Bloodlines. Juntos, crescemos a empresa rapidamente, assumindo novos artistas ansiosos com paixão pelo ofício, treinando-os e criando um coletivo de artistas práticos que compartilham os seus conhecimentos uns com os outros e ajudam uns aos outros em vários projetos.

 SWCP: Você é também um performer mascarado em aparições públicas para a Lucas Films no papel do Darth Vader.É fã de Star Wars? Tem algum personagem favorito?

J.B: Juntei-me a um grupo de Star Wars em 1999 chamado 501st Legion. O grupo fez aparições para eventos e causas de caridade. Eventualmente, o grupo chamou a atenção da Lucasfilm que adotou o grupo e começou a contratar certos membros para fazer aparições. Passei vários anos retratando Darth Vader na televisão, nos noticiários, revistas, shows de música, bem como em alguns pequenos filmes.

 

SWCP: Em que projetos está atualmente a trabalhar? 

J.B: Recentemente finalizamos uma fantástica longa-metragem chamada Invocação do Mal,o Culto pela 7th Street Productions e Breaking Glass Pictures.Também estamos em pós-produção de uma maravilhosa longa-metragem chamada 2:59 de Newton para a Newton Productions. É um divertido filme adolescente, possessão demoníaca baseado em eventos reais. Além disso, estamos a trabalhar num drama emocionante com elementos de terror chamado Laugh, escrito e dirigido por Peter Anthony.

O nosso principal projeto de grande escala começa a ser filmado neste verão. A Morte da Branca de Neve é uma releitura de terror de fantasia sombria do conto de fadas original dos Irmãos Grimm. O filme será lançado nos cinemas em março de 2025:

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs?

J.B: Gostaria de agradecer a todos os fãs por me apoiarem a mim e às minhas equipas ao longo dos anos. Fazer cinema indie é um trabalho difícil, muitas vezes com pouco retorno e o amor que recebemos dos fãs e apoiantes vai longe. Esperamos trazer uma nova sensação refrescante para o cinema com menos compromisso na nossa narrativa e FX especial. Por fim, continuem a esforçar-se para viver o vosso sonho. Jason Brooks is an American actor, director, and special FX artist. Working in Independent film since 2003, his career took off in 2017 when he was cast to play Jason Voorhees in the fan-favorite crowd-funded indie film, Friday the 13th Vengeance. He is also the co-founder of the Real Fiction Studios FX team.

 

SWCP: Tell us a little bit about your work on Friday the 13^th movies.

J.B: I have played Jason Voorhees in three feature films, Friday the 13th Vengeance, Vengeance 2 Bloodlines, and Friday the 13th Roseblood, and have played the character in two short films, Nightmare on Elm Street: Up all Night and Mythos. My Journey began in Mythos when I auditioned for the role in 2017. The director and producers were impressed with my performance and brought me on to play the iconic character.  Soon after filming it was decided that the fans wanted a longer feature film version of the story and Vengeance was born. We cast C.J. Graham (Jason Voorhees Friday the 13th part 6 Jason Lives) as Jason's father Elias Voorhees, Steve Dash (Jason Voorhees Friday the 13th Part 2) as the Sheriff Jason Realotti, and Tommy McLoughlin as Walt the Grave Keeper (writer and Director of Friday the 13th part 6 Jason Lives) and composer Harry Manfredi.  The film was a direct sequel to part 6 following Tommy Jarvis' daughters who go looking for their lost father in Camp Crystal Lake. 

After the success of this film, the fans wanted more so the director handed the film over to me to continue the story and so Vengeance 2 Bloodlines began. One of our producers, Peter Anthony had a story to tell as well and began filming Friday the 13th Rosebloood, a direct sequel to his favorite Friday the 13th Film Part 7 New Blood. Peter asked me to reprise my role as the infamous slasher in his film filling the shoes of Kane Hodder this time. Roseblood followed the story of Tina from part 7 and saw the return of the original cast, Lar Park Lincoln, (Tina), Terry Kiser (Dr. Crews), and Kevin Spirtas, (Nick). 

Once filming was complete, production on Vengeance 2 Bloodlines began. Vengeance 2 brought back C.J. Graham as Elias, Tommy McLoughlin as Walt but included more alumni from the franchise Darcy Demoss, (Nikki Part 6 Jason Lives), Thom Mathews, (Tommy Jarvis Part 6 Jason Lives) as well as other well known horror legends, Tamara Glynn, (Sam Halloween 5) Rob Mello, (Babyface Killer in Happy Death Day 1&2) Paul Taylor (Pinhead Hellraiser Judgement), Diana Prince (Darcy the Mail Girl Joe Bob Briggs Last Drive in), and Richie Ramone from the Ramones. The film continued the story of the girls' search for their father with an epic finale that put C.J. Graham back in his original part 6 Jason costume to face off against Thom Mathews as Tommy Jarvis in his original part 6 costume. After completion the film ran the international film festival circuit winning 64 awards.

 

SWCP: You Suffered multiple injuries while filming Rose Blood: A Friday the 13th Fan Film. What really happened?

J.B: At the end of the fight scene with the FAAST team when I mow down Sanchez with the weed easter saw, the blood that was sprayed at me contained tiny bits of metal that got into my eye. The on set medic removed eight tiny flakes of metal from my right eye. Later that day I had to put in a full sclera contact into that eye and perform a stunt where I fall through a wall from a raised platform.

The scene where the military officer is hitting me with the metal briefcase became another injury. After multiple successful takes of the choreographed fight, the handle on the briefcase broke mid-swing and twisted causing the edge of the briefcase to strike my forearm cracking the bone. I continued filming the remaining six hours of the day to finish the scene. That same night as I grabbed the machete from Colonel Chase's body by the blade, it got stuck and did not move. My hand slid along the blade slicing through the thick silicone gloves and my hand as the blade was not fully dulled.

 

SWCP: You partnered with makeup and FX artists Naomi Mechem-Miller and Michelle Munoz to create the Real Fiction Studios FX team. Could you tell us a bit more about this enterprise?

 

J.B: I ran Real Fiction Studios as a graphic design and freelance art company since 1999. When I began producing movies, naturally I kept using the name. I met makeup and FX artist Naomi Mechem-Miller on the set of Friday the 13th Vengeance 21 Bloodlines while creating the special FX in pre-production. After spending considerable time together on set and then working on future projects together building more and more fun effects, I had an idea. What if I turn Real Fiction Studios into a special FX company and we build it with other local makeup artists and creatives? Naomi was on board and we quickly brought on Michelle Munoz, another talented makeup and FX artist who led the department on Vengeance 2 Bloodlines. Together we grew the company quickly, taking on new eager artists with a passion for the craft, training them and creating a collective of practical FX artists who share their knowledge with each other and help one another on various projects.

SWCP: You´re also a costumed performer at public appearances for Lucas Films as Darth Vader. Are you a Star Wars fan?

J.B: I joined a group of screen accurate Star Wars costumers in 1999 called the 501st Legion. The group made appearances for events and charity causes. Eventually the group caught the attention of Lucasfilm who adopted the group and began hiring certain members to make appearances. I spent several years portraying Darth Vader on television, the news, magazines, music concerts as well as some small films.

 

SWCP: What projects are you currently working on?

J.B: We recently wrapped a fantastic feature film called Conjuring the Cult by 7th Street Productions and Breaking Glass Pictures. We are also in post-production on a wonderful feature film called 2:59 by Newton to Newton Productions. It is a fun teen, demon possession film based on actual events. In addition, we are working on an exciting drama with horror elements called Laugh, written and directed by Peter Anthony.

Our main large-scale project begins filming this summer. The Death of Snow White is a dark fantasy horror retelling of the original Grimm Brothers fairytale. SWCP: What message would you like to send to your fans? 

J.B: I would like to thank all the fans for supporting me and my teams throughout the years. Indie filmmaking is a tough job, often with little payoff and the love we get from the fans and supporters goes a long way. We hope to bring a new refreshing feel to filmmaking with less compromise in our storytelling and special FX. Lastly, keep pushing hard to live your dream. It is a lot of work, blood, sweat and tears, but seeing the results is absolutely worth it. Thank you all so much!
