Entrevistas SWCP: James Kahn

 

James Kahn é um médico especialista e escritor americano, mais conhecido pela sua novelização de Star Wars: O Regresso de Jedi. Para além disso, escreveu as novelizações dos filmes Poltergeist e Indiana Jones e o Templo Perdido. Também escreveu para séries de televisão bem conhecidas, como Melrose Place e Star Trek: The Next Generation. Foi também o produtor de Melrose Place de 1996 a 1998.

 

SWCP: Fez a consultoria técnica e trabalhou como extra no papel de médico no filme, E T: O Extraterrestre. E depois, Steven Spielberg atribuiu-lhe a escrita da novelização de outro filme que estava a fazer na mesma altura, Poltergeist. Podemos dizer que o início da sua carreira em Hollywood, foi" graças ao E.T”?

J.K: ET foi definitivamente a minha entrada nesse mundo. Embora eu goste de dizer que entrei em Hollywood indo para a faculdade de medicina, uma vez que ser um médico das urgências foi o que me levou para o cenário de E.T.

 

SWCP: Fale-nos da sua novelização de Star Wars: O Regresso de Jedi

J.K: Tive a sorte de ter terminado de escrever Poltergeist para o Spielberg pouco antes de George Lucas lhe pedir uma recomendação para novelizar O Regresso de Jedi. Spielberg disse a Lucas que tinha adorado a minha novelização de Poltergeist e o facto de ter trabalhado comigo, pelo que também consegui o trabalho para o ROTJ.

 

SWCP: Além de autor, compositor, produtor, foi também médico. Qual destas áreas é mais stressante para si?

J.K: Todos eles tinham momentos de stress de vez em quando, mas trabalhar nas urgências acabou por ter o seu preço. Há uma taxa elevada de esgotamento entre os médicos das urgências, e eu fui um dos que sucumbiu à pressão e ao eventual cinismo do trabalho.

 

SWCP: Tem participado em várias convenções. Como tem sido a sua interação com os fãs, mesmo com as gerações mais novas que ainda não tinham nascido aquando dos primeiros filmes de Star Wars?

J.K: Os meus maiores fãs nas convenções eram sobretudo as pessoas que cresceram com o universo de SW desde o início. Diziam-me que tinham lido tanto o livro que as capas caíram, ou que tinham faltado às aulas para o ler. Lembrem-se que, nessa altura, não havia DVDs, nem streaming, nem qualquer forma de ver o filme novamente sem comprar um bilhete para o cinema e, mesmo assim, não era possível alguns meses após o lançamento do filme, pois não estava em lado nenhum para ser visto. Por isso, a única forma de reviver a experiência, e até de a aprofundar, era ler a novelização.

 

SWCP: Em que projetos está atualmente a trabalhar? Sabemos que lançou recentemente uma autobiografia.

J.K: Sim, acabei de lançar o meu livro de memórias,Jedi: Uma Vida Dupla. Abrange os 20 anos em que escrevi as minhas grandes novelizações - Jedi, Poltergeist, Indiana Jones e o Templo da Perdição, Os Goonies - e fiz carreira a escrever e a produzir séries de televisão. Star Trek: Voyager, TekWar, Beyond Reality, Melrose Place e muitas outras séries de que nunca ouviu falar. O livro de memórias revela uma série de segredos escondidos que a maioria das pessoas nunca soube sobre ROTJ, bem como sobre as outras novelizações. Mas também abordo as histórias das urgências e a forma como esse mundo influenciou o que eu estava a escrever para televisão e cinema. Antes deste livro, escrevi um romance do Velho Oeste, uma aventura de ação histórica intitulada Matamoros, passada na fronteira entre o Texas e o México em 1863. SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs? 

J.K: Podemos fazer tudo o que quisermos, desde que não nos limitemos a uma determinada forma de o fazer. Escrevi durante 30 anos sem que ninguém visse ou se preocupasse com o que eu escrevia, simplesmente porque gostava de escrever. O facto de ser pago por isso veio mais tarde, porque fui capaz de aperfeiçoar o meu ofício e o meu amor pelo ofício transpareceu na escrita. Façam o que gostam e encontrarão satisfação na vida.

James Kahn is an American medical specialist and writer, best known for his novelization of Return of the Jedi. As well as Return of the Jedi, he wrote the novelizations of the films Poltergeist and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. He has also written for well-known television series such as Melrose Place and Star Trek: The Next Generation. He was also the producer of Melrose Place from 1996 to 1998.

 

 

SWCP: You did the technical consulting and worked as an extra on ET: The Extraterrestrial. And then, Steven Spielberg assigned you the writing of the novelization of the other movie he was doing at the same time, Poltergeist. Can we say that the beginning of your career in Hollywood was “thanks to E.T”?

J.K: ET was definitely my entry into that world. Although I like to say I got into Hollywood by going to medical school, since being an ER doctor is what got me onto the ET set.

 

SWCP:  Tell us about your Star Wars: Return of the Jedi novelization.

J.K: I was fortunate to have finished writing Poltergeist for Spielberg shortly before George Lucas asked him for a recommendation to novelize Return of the Jedi. Spielberg told Lucas he loved my Poltergeist novelization, and working with me, so I got the ROTJ job too.

 

SWCP: As well as being an author, composer and producer, you were also a doctor. Which of these areas is the most stressful for you?

J.K : They all had moments of stress from time to time, but working in the emergency room finally took its toll. There's a high rate of burnout among ER docs, and I was one who succumbed to the pressure and eventual cynicism of the job.

 

SWCP: You have participated in several conventions. How has your interaction been with the fans, even with the younger generations who were not yet born at the time of the first Star Wars movies?

J.K: My biggest fans at the cons were mostly the folks who grew up with the SW universe from the start. They'd tell me they read the book so much the covers fell off, or they cut class to read it. Remember, in those days, there were no DVDs, no streaming, no way to see the movie again without buying a ticket to the theater, and even then, you couldn't a few months after the movie's release, it just wasn't anywhere to be seen. So, the only way to relive the experience, and even deepen it, was to read the novelization.

 

SWCP: What projects are you currently working on? We know that you recently released an autobiography.

J.K: Yes, I just released My Jedi Memoir: A Double Life. It covers the 20 years I wrote my big novelizations - Jedi, Poltergeist, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Goonies - and made a career writing and producing television series as well. Star Trek: Voyager, TekWar, Beyond Reality, Melrose Place, and a lot of shows you've never heard of. The memoir reveals a number of hidden secrets most people never knew about ROTJ, as well as the other novelizations. But I also go into emergency room stories, and how that world impacted what I was writing for television and film. Before this book I wrote an Old Western novel, a historical action adventure titled Matamoros, set on the Texas/Mexican border in 1863. Both books are available on Amazon. And so is my music, mostly folk and Americana. My last album, By the Risin' of the Sea, is a collection of original sea shanties about climate change, refugees, and social change. SWCP: What message would you like to send to your fans?

J.K: You can do anything you want to do, as long as you don't confine yourself to a certain way it has to be done. I wrote for 30 years without anyone seeing or caring about what I wrote, simply because I loved to write. Getting paid for it later came because I'd been able to hone my craft, and my love of the craft came through in the writing. Do what you love, and you'll find satisfaction in life.
