Entrevistas SWCP: Craig Wrobleski

 

 

Durante mais de trinta anos,o Canadiano Craig Wrobleski,tem trabalhado como cinematógrafo em diversas produções de filmes,séries televisivas e documentários. Craig é mais conhecido por Fargo (2014), The Umbrella Academy, Furbar, Under the Banner of Heaven, entre outros.

 

SWCP:Que conselhos gostaria de deixar aqueles que gostariam de enveredar uma carreira como a sua?

C.W: O meu conselho para quem deseja seguir carreira em cinematografia é treinar o seu olhar. Uma grande parte do motivo pelo qual será contratado como diretor de fotografia é a forma como vê o mundo. Ninguém mais terá exatamente a sua perspetiva sobre o que vê, e treinar o seu olhar para compreender como a luz funciona, como as lentes veem o mundo, como os objetos e formas se encaixam, a teoria das cores e aumentar a sua perceção do mundo irá criar a sua visão e moldar o seu trabalho. Além disso, mergulhar em filmes, pinturas, fotografias, música e todas as outras experiências sensoriais que compõem a vida lhe dará uma base de inspiração e referência para construir o seu próprio trabalho. O único outro conselho é continuar a filmar — este não é um trabalho em que nunca ficamos bons, apenas ficamos melhores.

 

SWCP: Tendo trabalhado com alguns atores de renome,recorda-se de alguma situação engraçada ou invulgar que tenha ocorrido durante as rodagens?

C.W: Para ser sincero, estou tão concentrado no trabalho que muitas vezes perco alguns dos momentos mais engraçados no set, mas a equipa de filmagem e o elenco são compostos por personagens tão peculiares que há constantemente coisas engraçadas a acontecer no set. Também estamos constantemente em situações incomuns e lugares estranhos a fazer coisas esquisitas.

 

SWCP: Que recordações guarda do seu trabalho na popular série da Netflix, FUBAR? 

C.W: Lembro-me de ter ficado incrivelmente impressionado com Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ele é a verdadeira definição de uma lenda e eu fiquei intimidado ao conhecê-lo, mas ele foi o homem mais caloroso, acolhedor e um verdadeiro profissional. Ele era sempre o primeiro a estar pronto para uma cena e raramente saía do set - ele gosta muito do processo de filmagem e simplesmente gosta de estar envolvido e engajado. Lembro-me da primeira chamada pelo Zoom que fizemos com o Arnold para analisar o guião e, no final da chamada, ele reservou um momento para nos dizer que acredita em «repetições» — ou seja, quanto mais ensaiarmos as cenas, melhores elas ficarão. Um bom conselho para a realização cinematográfica e para a vida! Também me lembro da primeira vez que colocámos uma lente de 100 mm na câmara e alinhámos a filmagem com o Arnold, o que me fez lembrar de quando eu era adolescente e me sentava no sofá para assistir ao Exterminador Implacável. Parecia que tínhamos encontrado a lente com que os seus close-ups foram filmados em todos aqueles filmes que eu tanto adorava. Cada dia no set com o Arnold foi um dia que eu nunca teria imaginado nem nos meus sonhos mais loucos.

 

SWCP: Em que projetos está atualmente a trabalhar?

C.W: Acabei de terminar uma série da Amazon em Praga, estrelada por Octavia Spencer e Hannah Waddingham, chamada Ride or Die. Foi uma experiência incrível. Atualmente, estou em Vancouver a filmar The Altruists para a Netflix.

 

SWCP: Você filmou documentários em todo o Canadá, nos Estados Unidos e na Europa. Já alguma vez visitou Portugal profissionalmente ou em turismo?

C.W: Nunca estive em Portugal, mas tenho muitos amigos que já estiveram lá e adoraram. Adoraria ir um dia.

 

SWCP: Que mensagem gostaria de enviar aos seus fãs?

C.W: Gostaria de agradecer por assistirem aos filmes e séries e espero que tenham gostado de os ver tanto quanto nós gostamos de produzi-los. Sem vocês, não poderíamos fazer o que fazemos e por isso sou eternamente grato.

For over thirty years,the Canadian Craig Wrobleski has worked as a cinematographer on numerous film productions, television series, and documentaries. Craig is best known for Fargo (2014), The Umbrella Academy,Furbar, Under the Banner of Heaven, among others.

 SWCP: What advice would you give to those who would like to pursue a career like yours? 

C.W: My advice to anyone looking to pursue a career in cinematography is to train your eye. A big part of the reason you will be hired as a cinematographer is for how you see the world. No one else will have exactly your perspective on what you see and training your eye to understand how light works, how lenses see the world, how objects and shapes fit together, colour theory and heightening your perception of the world will create your vision and shape your work. In addition, immersing yourself in films, paintings, photographs. music and all other sensory experiences that make up life will give you a foundation of inspiration and reference to build on in your own work. The only other advice is to just keep shooting - this is not a job that we never get good at, we just get better.

 

SWCP: Having worked with some renowned actors, do you recall any funny or unusual situations that occurred during filming?  

C.W: To be honest, I am so focused on the work that I often miss some of the funnier moments on set but a film crew and cast is made up of such characters that there are constantly funny things happening on set. We are also constantly in unusual situations and odd places doing strange things.

 

SWCP: What memories do you have of your work on the popular Netflix series, FUBAR?

 C.W: I remember being incredibly impressed with Arnold Schwarzenneger. He is the true definition of a legend and I was intimidated to meet him but he was the warmest, most welcoming man and a true professional. He was always the first one to be ready for a scene and rarely left set - he enjoys the process of filmmaking so much and just likes to be involved and engaged. I recall the first zoom call we did with Arnold to walk through the script and at the end of the call he took a moment to tell us that he believes in “reps” - meaning the more we rehearse the scenes, the better they will get. Good advice for filmmaking and for life! I also recall the first time we put a 100mm lens on the camera and lined up the shot on Arnold and it reminded me of sitting on my couch as a teenager watching Terminator. It felt like we found the lens that his close-ups were shot with in all those movies I loved so much. Every day on set with Arnold was a day I never would have imagine in my wildest dreams.

 

SWCP: What projects are you currently working on? 

C.W: just finished an Amazon show in Prague starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham called Ride or Die. It was an incredible experience. I’m currently in Vancouver shooting The Altruists for Netflix.

 

SWCP: You have lensed documentaries all over Canada, the US and into Europe. Have you ever visited Portugal for work or tourism? 

C.W: I have never been to Portugal but have many friends you have been there and loved it. I would love to go some day. 

SWCP: What message would you like to send to your fans?  

C.W: I would like to say thanks for watching the films and series and I hope you have enjoyed watching them as much as we enjoyed making them. Without you, we wouldn’t get to do what we do and for that I am eternally grateful.
