O belga Mark Dermul é um grande coleccionador de memorabilia de Starwars desde o início da saga,mas desde 1992 que coleccionar autógrafos,tem sido a sua grande paixão.Mark tem tambèm editado vários guias de viagens abordando os principais locais onde foral rodadas as cenas de Starwars.Dirige também um dos principais sites da especialidade:

http://www.bountyhunter.be/. Nesta entrevista em exclusivo para o SWCP,vamos ficar a conhecer um pouco mais sobre este Guru europeu do coleccionismo e receber alguns conselhos acerca de como se podem obter bons autógrafos.

SWCP:és um grande coleccionador de autógrafos e tens como objectivo alcançar o milhar de itens na tua colecção,mas ainda te recordas do 1º autógrafo que conseguiste obter?de quem foi?

M.D:obtive o meu 1º autógrafo na Jedicon em 1994(em Kolónia/Alemanha) à quase 16 anos atrás.Foi do Dave Prowse,mais conhecido pelo Darth Vader.Na foto podes ver que eu era ainda muito jovem.O segundo eo terceiro autógrafos foram -me concedidos pelo Anthony Daniels(C3PO) e pelo Steve Sansweet da LucasFilm,quando eles foram convidados para este evento.

Não muito depois,fui capaz de adquirir uma placa do "Império Contra Ataca"assinada pelo Mark Hamill(a minha placa era a nº 12 ,entre 995!).Então eu comecei a escrever aos actores e comecei a coleccionar alguns autógrafos antes dos eventos se terem tornado populares ,e em que tens de pagar pelos autógrafos.Sim,houve um tempo em que não tinhas de pagar nada por eles,mas infelizmente esse tempo já se foi.

SWCP: qual é o teu item mais valioso da tua colecção?

M.D:tenho alguns itens que estimo muito e é um desafio em saber qual dos autógrafos eu dou mais valor,mas no final,creio que o poster do "Império Contra Ataca"assinado pelo Harrison Ford seja o meu preferido.Ele assinou-o em Outubro de 2008,durante uma sessão de autògrafos para fins de caridade (que foi também quando consegui o meu poster do Indiana Jones assinado por ele).Mas também estou muito afeiçoado aos meus autógrafos da Carrie Fisher e do George Lucas,é claro;no entanto,o encontro casual que tive com o Hayden Christensen no aeroporto de San Francisco em 2005 foi o prazer mais inesperado,e portanto uma boa adição à minha colecção.Acredito em não viajar sem uma Sharpie.Viajar sempre preparado,pois nunca se sabe com quem te podes cruzar.

SWCP: sabemos que tens viajado por quase todos os locais onde foram rodadas as filmagens de Starwars,tendo inclusivé editado alguns guias acerca desses locais;fazendo-te a mesma pergunta que fiz ao Gus Lopez,qual foi o local que mais te impressionou?

M.D: obviamente a Tunísia tem mais para oferecer.Essa é uma das razões porque eu vou voltar parauma última vez em Maio deste ano (www.markdermul.be/tatooine) .Mas Finse na Noruega

(www.markdermul.be/hoth ) é também impressionante.Estar num glaciar com 16 km2 é inacreditável,sentes-te realmente "noutro planeta"-Hoth,é claro-pos não há nada ao seu redor,nem qualquer tipo de civilização.

Vlla Del Balbianello no Lago Como, em Itália(www.markdermul.be/naboo ) é absolutamente brilhante como um local,mas não difícil de encontrar.Eu diria que se tivésse de apontar um local favorito,ele teria de ser o exterior da Quinta dos Lars em Netta,perto da fronteira argelina.

Nós denominamo-lo por "conjunto de Igloo".Na verdade,nós fomos lá uma noite para desfrutar de um pôr do Sol com a música de Starwars de um iPod como tema de fundo.Asseguro-te que foi um momento "Goosebumps"!

SWCP: só coleccionas autògrafos?

M.D:infelizmente,não,isso não é tudo o que colecciono.A minha colecção tem mais de quinze mil itens,que tenho adquirido desde 1978.Tenho uma família muito compreensiva que me permite utilizar um espaço em nossa cas,como um "museu privado".Colecciono livros (tenho mais de 600 traduzidos em 16 línguas,incluindo o português),figuras de acção(apenas as novas),tudo o que esteja relacionado com música e vídeo/dvd e adereços.Os itens mais agradáveis da minha colecção são realmente um desenho do Qui-Gon-Jiin feito por um artista de rua em Nova Iorque,quando lá estive em Maio de 1999,para a estreia do episódio I,um traje de Stormtrooper que eu coloquei no meu estúdio sobre um manequim,um traje do Darth Vader que eu uso apenas em ocasiões especiais,como o Dia das Bruxas e uma máquina de pinball Data East de Starwars do ano de 1992.Devido à crise de crédito dos últimos dois anos,eu tenho abrandado em comprar bastantes coisas.

SWCP: visitas com alguma frequência várias convenções de Starwars,sendo uma boa forma para obter excelentes autógrafos.Que conselhos gostarias de deixar aos coleccionadores portugueses deste tipo de itens?

M.D:existem boas maneiras de obter autógrafos,claro,mas para além de boas fontes (como o http://www.bountyhunter.be/), a única maneira de saber que o seu autógrafo é 100% autêntico,é obtê-lo numa convenção.Há mais dois benefícios além da autênticidade.Um:podes escolher a imagem que desejas receber assinada,ou podesaté ter o teu próprio artigo assinado.Dois: cada autógrafo tem a sua própria história.Se verificares a minha colecção pessoal em www.jedimaster.se verás que eu recolho a maior parte dos meus autógrafos pessoalmente em convenções e obtenho-os com a dedicatória "ao Mark".Cada autógrafo é especial,porque não há nada mais divertido do que ser capaz de obtê-lo por si mesmo e conversar com os seus ídolos.

Quando obtive o da Carrie Fisher numa sessão deautógrafos em Londres,em2005,um sonho tornou-se realidade.Admito que desde criança que tinha um fraco pela Leia.E,durante a assinatura,surpreendi os ajudantes e os outros fãs da Carrie,simplesmente por perguntar se lhe poderia dar um abraço.Ela levantou-se da cadeira,colocou os seus braços à minha volta e deu-me um grande beijo na boca!isto dava para uma boa história!nunca poderás ter esse tipo de memória através da compra de autógrafos da Carrie por um negociante!outro grande encontro surgiu em 2007,durante a Celebration Europe em Londres.Finalmente tinha conseguido encontrar o Mark Hamill e falar com ele.Era uma coisa que eu procurava há muito tempo!alguns bons conselhos:não tentem comprar autógrafos no eBay.De acordo com um relatório do FBI,nâo menos do que 95% dos autógrafos em oferta são falsos!

SWCP: tendo conhecido várias celebridades de Starwars,qual foi a que tiveste mais dificuldade em obter um autógrafo?

M.D: como gerente de RP e mais tarde como presidente do clube belga de fãs de Starwars,fui capaz de entrar em contacto com o elenco e muitos membros da produção.A entrevista que fiz ao Sir Christopher Lee foi memorável!a maioria deles foi muito bom entrevistar,sendo o Jeremy Bulloch o meu favorito.Ele tornou-se numa migo pessoal,entre muitos outros.

A celebridade que eu tive um monte de problemas com a obtenção do seu autógrafo,foi o Frank Oz.Ele é um signatário notóriamente difícil ,tendo declinado muitos dos meus pedidos de assinatura privada com a Bounty Hunter.Finalmente,eu consegui uma assinatura personalizada para a minha colecção,mas demorou muito a consegui-la.

Uma absolutamente difícil,teria de ser necessáriamente a do sr. Ian Mcdiarmid(Palpatine).Ele nunca assinou através do correio,dizendo que não estava interessado.Paraobter um autógrafo seu,tive de consegui-lo pessoalmente no Teatro Almeida em Londres,onde ele trabalhava nessa altura(2000).Esperei por ele à porta;finalmente saíu,e assinou,mas não foi muito feliz ao fazê-lo,recusando-se a assinar um segundo ou terceiro item,e quando eu lhe perguntei se poderia tirar umafoto com ele...na verdade,ele fugiu!quero dizer literalmente!ele começou a correr ,eu comtemplei em segui-lo por um tempo-tinha a certeza que poderia alcançá-lo,mas decidi que seria absolutamente ridículo,então simplesmente fui me embora.

SWCP:Mark,obrigado por nos teres concedido esta entrevista em exclusivo.Foi uma entrevista muito agradável e didáctica!

The belgian Mark Dermul is a big collector of Starwars memorabilia from the begining of the saga,but since 1992 that collect Starwars autographs has been his great passion.Mark has also published several travel guides covering the main locations where scenes were shot.In this exclusive interview for SWCP,we get to know more about this "Guru" European collector and receive some advice about how you can get good autographs.

SWCP: You are a great collector of autographs and you have the objective to reach the thousands of items in your collection.Do you still remember the first autograph that you got?who did it?

M.D: I got my very first autograph at the Jedi Con in 1994 (Köln, Germany), almost 16 years ago. It was from Dave Prowse, better known as Darth Vader. In the photo you can see that I was still very young J The second and third autographs were from Anthony Daniels (See Threepio) and Lucasfilm’s Steve Sansweet as they were also guests at this show. Not much later I was able to secure a Mark Hamill signed Empire Strikes Back plaque (I had no. 12 of 995!). Then I started writing the actors and collected quite a few autographs that way before shows became popular and you had to pay for autographs. Yes, there was a time when you did NOT have to pay for them, but that time is – unfortunately – long gone.

SWCP: wich is the most valuable piece of your collection?

M.D: I have a few items that I cherish very much and it’s a close contest to which autographs I value the most. But in the end, I believe this to be my Harrison Ford signed Empire Strikes Back poster. He signed it in October 2008, during a charity signing (that’s also when I obtained my Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade poster signed by Mr Ford). But I’m also very fond of my Carrie Fisher and George Lucas autographs, of course. However, the chance meeting I had with Hayden Christensen at the San Francisco airport in 2005 was the most unexpected pleasure and hence a nice addition to my collection. I believe in never travelling without a sharpie. Always travel prepared for you never know who you may run into .

SWCP: we know that you have traveled to almost every places where were shot filming Starwars ,and edited several guides on these locations.Making you the same question that we did to Gus Lopez,wich was the place that impressed you most?and why?

M.D: Obviously, Tunisia has the most to offer. That’s one of the reasons why I’m going back for a last time in May of this year (www.markdermul.be/tatooine). But Finse in Norway (www.markdermul.be/hoth) is very impressive as well. Standing on a 16km² glacier is unbelievable. You actually feel like standing on another planet – Hoth, of course – for there is nothing around you that says there is any kind of civilization around you. Villa del Balbianello at Lake Como in Italy (www.markdermul.be/naboo) is absolutely brilliant as a location, but not hard to find or exclusive. I would say, if I had to point out a favorite location, it would have to be the Lars Exterior sets past Nefta near the Algerian border. We dubbed this the ‘igloo set’. We actually went back there one evening to enjoy a sunset with Star Wars music from an iPod in the background. Goosebumps moment, I promise you!

SWCP: do you only collecting autographs?

M.D: Unfortunately, no, that’s not all I collect. My collection is over 15.000 items, but then I’ve been collecting since 1978. I have a very understanding family that allows me to use one room in our house as my private ‘museum’. I collect books (I have over 600 over those, in 16 languages, including the Portugese J), the action figures (only the new ones, I’m afraid), everything related to music and video/dvd and props. The nicest items in my collection are actually a drawing of Qui-Gon Jinn by a New York street artist (when I was there in May 1999 for the Episode I premiere), a stormtrooper costume that I’ve put in my study on a mannequin, a Darth Vader costume that I wear only on special occasions such as Halloween and a Data East Star Wars pinball machine from 1992. Due to the credit crunch of the past two years, I have slowed down on buying loads of stuff, though.

SWCP: you visit with some frequency various conventions,wich is a good way to get great autographs.What advice would you like to give to the portuguese collectors of such items,to get autographs at these events?

M.D: There are several ways of obtaining autographs, of course, but apart from several good sources (like the Bounty Hunter J), the only way to be 100% that your autographs is authentic, is to get it at a convention. There are two more benefits, apart from the authenticity. One: you can choose the image you want to get signed or you can even take your own item, and two: every autograph will get its own story. If you check out my personal collection at www.jedimaster.be, you’ll see that I collect most of my autographs ‘in-person’ at conventions and get them dedicated ‘to Mark’. Each and every autograph is special, because there is no more fun than to be able to get it yourself and talk to the your idols. When obtaining Carrie Fisher at a signing in London in 2005, a dream came true. I admit, ever since I was a kid, I had a crush on Leia. And during that signing I stunned the helpers and other fans by simply asking Carrie Fisher if I could give her a hug. She got up out of her chair, put her arms around me and gave me a big kiss, smack on the lips! How’s that for a good story? You can never have that kind of memory by purchasing Carrie’s autograph from a dealer! Another great meet & greet came in 2007 during the Celebration Europe in London. I finally got to meet and chat with Mark Hamill. That was something I had been looking forward to for a long time! Some good advice, try not to buy autographs from eBay. According to an FBI report, no less than 95% of the autographs on offer are fakes!

SWCP: having know several celebrities of Starwars,wich one you had more difficulty in getting an autograph?Thats all.Thank you for granted to SWCP this interview.Is it possible to you sign this image (digitally) with a dedication to SWCP and all portuguese fans of SW?And send it by e-mail with your answers about the interview?

M.D: As PR Manager and later President of the Belgian Star Wars Fan Club, I was able to get in touch with many cast- and crewmembers. The interview I did with Sir Christopher Lee was memorable! Most of them were very nice to work with, Jeremy Bulloch being my personal favorite. He has since become a personal friend. So have many others. The person I had a lot of trouble with to obtain his autograph was Frank Oz. He is a notoriously difficult signer and has declined many of my requests for a private signing with the Bounty Hunter. In the end I was at last able to get him, personalized, for my collection, but it took quite some doing. The absolute most difficult one, however, would have to be Mr Ian McDiarmid. He never signed through the mail, saying that he really isn’t interested. To obtain him, I had to get him in person at the Almeida Theater in London where he worked at the time (2000). I waited for him at the door. At long last he came out. He signed, but wasn’t very happy to do it, and flatly refused to sign a second or third item and when I asked him if I could have my picture taken with him… he actually ran away! I mean that very literally! He started running. I contemplated following him for a while – I was sure I could outrun him – but decided that would be absolutely ridiculous, so I simply walked away.
